OVERVIEW

Perfect for all vocal applications.

The Shure Beta 87A Supercardioid Condenser Mic is a new take on an old classic. The Beta 87 was consistently a top choice of performers and audio technicians due to its accuracy, detail, and rich vocal production. Now this longstanding favorite has been redesigned as the Shure Beta 87A. It has a thicker handle that gives a more comfortable feel when hand-held. It also includes a new break-resistant swivel adapter and low-frequency roll-off to compensate for proximity effect and to prevent boominess. The supercardioid pattern provides high gain-before-feedback, and its 3-stage pop filter minimizes breath pop and noise. Frequency response: 50Hz-18kHz.

Requires phantom power.

FEATURES
  • Supercardioid electret condenser mic
  • Redesigned with a thicker shank for hand-held comfort
  • Break-resistant swivel adapter
  • Low-frequency roll-off
  • 3-stage pop filter
  • 50Hz-18kHz frequency response

I have used many mics in my 40 years of pro playing. After trying many mics over the years I always reverted back to my original trusty Shure SM 58 that never let me down. I have several SM 58's including the first one I bought in 1974 and even with years of hard road use it still works great (I have replaced the ball/grill at least 3-4 times)so I have nothing but praise for the SM 58. I had the opportunity about a year ago to get a pair of Shure 87A mics from a friend who was getting out of the business and selling his entire (large) PA system. I had the chance to buy 6 of them at an extremely low bargain price and wish I had taken all of them.
The first night my partner and I plugged in the two 87a mics (the in place of our SM 58) we were amazed. I had the 58s standing by for a quick swap if needed but after two songs we both looked at each other with very positve nods. The difference in the upper mids was dramatic. The 87A was so much clearer than the 58. There was also a real difference in how the 87A worked with our in line vocal harmonizers. We use two Digitech Vocal harmonizers that we plug the mics directly into and then out to the PA mixer (Mackie). The 87A mics picked up and delivered a much more detailed and clearer vocal to the harmonizer thus making the vocals cut thru much better and gave the digitally created harmonies a much cleaner and more realistic sound overall.
We are extremely pleased in every way with the Shure 87A mics. If the 87A's went missing today I would order another pair immediately (or as soon as I could afford it).

I have a CAD C-195, and it beats the beta 87A hands down!!! The Cad is much clearer(highs & lows)and hotter than the beta 87a, at less than half the price. I was totally disappointed. Don't waste your money on this mic, it does not live up to its promises!!

Comments about Shure Beta 87A Supercardioid Condenser Mic:

Great vocal mic for precision and articulation. My wife sings Armenian/Persian and I do traditional smooth James Taylor and French music. It picks-up all of nuances on both voices and they aren't even KSMs! KMS would be the only next logical jump. Yes, vocal quality leads, but this one made her say,why didn't you tell me about this one? It's great on funk vocals too, because you can isolate the voice while the music is moving and then launch into Cat Stevens and other delicate stuff.

Comments about Shure Beta 87A Supercardioid Condenser Mic:

If you volunteer to do the sound at your church, do yourself a favor and get this thing. Make sure the phatom power is on and I didn't have to do any equalizing with this mic and it sounded great! If anyone knows of a wireless system that has the same quality in sound please post!

Comments about Shure Beta 87A Supercardioid Condenser Mic:

This mic has very audible plosives and pops compared to shure beta 58a. I'd recommend a beta 58a any day over the beta 87a. This mic sounds thin.

I have always used Shure Mics. including the wireless for Tenor Sax, but when I used the Beta 87A, it is the VERY BEST EVER. It is the cleanest sounding mic possible for the Sax at full volumes.

Comments about Shure Beta 87A Supercardioid Condenser Mic:

This mic is just great. It's like singing with no mic, it sounds as your real natural voice. This mic is just excellent, I love it. I am using it to perform live and also to record.

I am also a lead guitar and I could concentrate more on my playing because I could be away from the mic when I sing.

Comments about Shure Beta 87A Supercardioid Condenser Mic:

This is a great vocal microphone. I've used it quite a bit with great results. However, some voices do not resonate on this mic, because the super-cardioid pattern makes it pickier. (The voice might sound clear, but not full.) I think the Beta 87C would be a better choice if you're looking for a versatile vocal mic.
If you're looking to buy a mic for a specific voice, TRY IT OUT FIRST! I highly recommend finding a mic you can borrow for a gig or two. Reviews cannot fully describe the pros and cons of higher-end mics, especially on vocal mics.
