I have used this mic for many years with a minidisc as a backup to an elaborate ADAT recording system for live music. Many's the time the ADAT crapped out leaving me with the minidisc recording. While it won't match the quality of an ADAT with pro mics & mixers, the results were amazingly good, all things considered. It is very sensitive with good sound quality. And it fits in your shirt pocket. Broke the battery screw cap once & Sony had a replacement part.
I somehow managed to accumulate three of these microphones. I am a trombonist and first used the ECM-MS907 for recording audition tapes in high school with a minidisc recorder. While this was an affordable solution for the time, as I got more serious with my recordings, they needed better quality and the microphone was not adequate, and often would receive comments to use better recording equipment. This is priced right, and works pretty good, but it is not recommended for more hi fidelity recordings.
I use one of these mics with the Sony minidisc recorder. I am continually astounded at the quality of this microphone. I have recorded many live performances including small jazz combos, a capella choral concerts, and large orchestral concerts. The quality of this mic, with the minidisc recorder, is CD quality digital recording that fits in your pocket and runs on battery. This recording combo is unparalleled.
I use this mic primarily to record podcasts over lunch. The room ambiance is remarkable. The sensitivity within 6-8 feet is astounding given the dynamic range of the conversation (not to mention chewing and drinking sounds).Even recording direct to MD, the headspace is quite large.I highly recommend it for speech and general sound recording with a Sony Minidisc recorder.
I am on my second microphone. The quality is pretty good for the price your paying. The problem I have with it is that after a couple of months of use one the channels on the mic stop recording. This has happened to both mics that I purchased.
I have used this mic for years with my MD recorder and it is killer. There is no mic with similar size, ease of use, and price that even compares. It does wonders at capturing warm and accurate room sound, a must for recording practices and bootlegging shows.
