I, like many others, picked this up on The Stupid Deal Of The Day. For that price, it could not be beat, still reasonable. I am not sure what people thought this was, but if research something before buying you would know, do not blame Alesis, or Musicians Friend, for your impulse buying! It actually performs, looks, and sounds better, after it is transferred to PC, or other viewing device. If you were planning on using a 2" screen, what did you think you would get. As far as being technically difficult, if you cannot take out a SD Card and place in your PC, or hook up the USB cable, you really should not be buying something like this anyway! The sound is recorded nicely, and once again on the proper screen, pleasantly surprised at quality of video. I can see at the current price, reason for not buying, but now, I had mine out of the box recording, into the PC, in minutes, on a x64 bit Windows 7 Home Premiun Wal-Mart special. So, do I recommend it, yes! Just realize you may have to know a little about what you are doing, but my 8 yr. old takes still, and video, and puts them on his laptop, all by his lonesome, just my two-cents worth. Buy it give it a chance, if you do not like it or cannot figure it out return it, but I would buy this over the competitors, just for ease of use, and price-wise. To each his own! Thanks.

First, let me say I like Alesis. They have created some great and innovative products for great prices. I own many. Now... I bought my VideoTrack in Dec 2010 here at MF, but what I have to say here is about Alesis, not MF.
Overall impressions, the video quality is pretty bad, but I was ok with that. The device design is ok, and the stereo audio is pretty decent. All those things were fine for the price point... and if the device worked, I probably would not be writing this.
I noticed immediately that the recorder would stop recording randomly. Could be 5 min, could be 30 min. I tried with the supplied 2GB card and also a high quality 16GB card for video that might go longer than 45 min (like a whole band set). There were problems on both memory cards.
I actually lost valuable gig recordings more than once because of this (I know, I know ... crazy that I actually used it as intended...).
I went to Alesis' website and located the firmware update. I am a computer support person, so I am capable... and despite my exact performance of their steps. The device told me "incorrect FW" every time and refused to update. I can only guess that I already have the latest firmware, but there is no (known) way of knowing since they don't tell you how to find it on the device screens and I couldn't find it myself either.
I sent at least two detailed emails to Alesis support and never even got an acknowledgement. After several months, giving up and frustrated with the VideoTrack.. I decided to call Alesis directly. I spoke to a rep that acted like he never heard of this problem before (yet I see it all over the web). After instructing me that they would RMA the device (RETURN SHIP AT MY EXPENSE!) I agreed. I waited over a month... no communication. I emailed the tech support contact and he replied "shipping soon".
Well the device arrived about another week later. I immediately inspected the "new" device and was already disappointed to see that it had a serial number LOWER than the one I sent back (I kept a copy of my original serial number)... I know this was not proof of anything, but did not instill confidence. Seems like they must have a stockpile of old ones.. not surprising to me given my experience.
Anyway, to wrap this up... I unpacked, charged the unit overnight, setup and set on a tripod to record (pointed it at a movie playing on my computer screen for some non-still recording). Recorder stopped after 5 min. Test 2 seems like it made it until the battery ran out, but not sure because apparently if the battery runs out it does not save any file. Argh. Recharged. Test 3 stopped after abour 40min with battery bars clearly visible.
I tried the whole firmware update process AGAIN...same results as original recorder.. "incorrect FW". Same problems...I am done wasting my time!
I think Alesis has made a lemon and they are just hoping to sell these units to people who will eventually just give up trying to get them to work reliably. I am way past the point of getting a refund from the retailer, and RMA's just cost me MORE money in return shipping. I am done throwing good money after bad. Thanks a lot Alesis... I will remember this next time I have to to between you and a competitor. I guess I can still use this for 5 minute movies of things that don't have to record reliably (????).
Don't get burned... I did twice on this thing... there are others way more deserving of your money even if you have to spend a bit more it will be worth it.
I give 5 on features because it is a basic device, but I knew that when I bought it.
See my overall description. This thing stops recording randomly... and who knows if it will be important like your first gig or best performance ever.

I had one defective device, RMA'd for another and it is exactly the same. I believe this is a design bug that Alesis is unable or unwilling to fix. BUYER BEWARE - you were warned. Search the web, others are having same issue. Firmware does not fix. Alesis does not even acknowledge support emails on the topic. Alesis made me pay return shipping on the RMA, and new device is exactly same. So now I am out more money.
If this thing worked, I would give probably a 6 or 7 value since is is economical, yet there are competing devices that may offer better bang for the buck. However, since this thing basically crashes whenever it wants, the value is almost zero since I can't rely on it to do its job. If it wasn't important to me, I wouldn't be RECORDING it. Since this is aimed at musicians, how many times do you think your audience will tolerate...hey, let's play that set again cuz my recorder stopped by itself. Duh!

I sent mine back!

By knarfsupmac

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

I purchased mine for the on sale price plus the 30 dollar mail in rebate. I thought for this price I'd try it out. I wanted a mobile device for recording but, my unit wouldn't charge its battery. The unit would operate while plugged into the usb cable but, wouldn't charge up. I called the company and they sent me a zip file to update the unit, I couldn't get it to work so I just returned the unit. I should have listenend to all the reviews I read before purchasing. I will spend a little more money to get a better unit. ps/ I didn't use the mail in rebate!

Wow, not a good wow either. Okay, I went through 2 devices and both had the same exact problem. Constant freezing of the device and when it did want to work, the recording would stop randomly from 4-6 mins even if nobody was 500ft near the dang thing. stear clear dont waste your time. i went with something else but i cant get my time or my jamz back that were missed. dont get me wrong the audio is great but its pointless if the record function wont stay on.

Alesis Video Track - Do Not Buy!

By vorpalstudio

from Austin, TX

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

I bought this on the marketed hype of a new product being promoted by the manufacturer BEFORE the user reviews started coming out. This is the worst product I have ever bought. The video quality is so poor, I'm embarassed to post anything I capture online. Having to guestimate between the three audio settings has proven to be frustrating at best, because unless you bring your own headphones to test the audio output, there's no way to tell what you're capturing. The software is so basic.. there are almost no settings to adjust, so what is disapointing must stay disapointing.I wish I had returned this item within the 45 days, but I kept hoping for a software release that might fix some of the issues..Needless to say, this was a waste of money, time, and mental energy. I could have bought a Flip and gotten better results.Buy yourself a quality microphone to bypass your video capture device, and stick with something that will actually make you look as good as you are.The ONLY thing I would recommend this product as useful for is private rehearsal capture/review. This product is an embarassment.

I had 2 of these

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

I ordered the first one and it just would not work, Period. That was because the battery points were damaged already. Also, the view screen was badly scratched, out of the box. I discovered that the plastic was just very soft and scratched very easily. So I sent it back for a new one to give it a fair shot. The second one arrived and did work. BUT, it takes a college degree to figure out how to use it. It would not work with my mac, even tho it says it should. It didn't. Again the screen was all scratched up out of the box. I immediately called customer service and returned it. I just don't have the time to play with toys. And that is just what this is. a toy. I already had the ZOOM Q3HD and I strongly recommend everyone just cut to the chase and get the ZOOM. It work s and sounds FANTASTIC. So good that I ordered another one for my girlfriend.

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

This little unit got some bad press from other owners and I think that, unless they are only fond and familiar with hi-end (expensive) video, they didn't do justice to this. I found it immediately useable, intuitive, and of sufficeint quality to have lots of fun for the money. The on-off switch is not a problem, the manual is easy to follow, and it makes a great little recorder for those sudden moments of inspiration you wish to capture. I'm still testing it, but am very pleased with all features so far.

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

I bought it cheap but would not recommend it at any price. The LCD viewing screen is not bright enough to see outside during the day so you could not record any outdoor events before sundown. It should have been equipped with a peak detector for the audio setting because you are only guessing where to set it. The highest setting won't even pick up normal conversation so it is worthless for anything but amplified music,

Very disappointed

By manouche man

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

I was not expecting much as far as video quality goes but was at least hoping for decent audio. The audio is ok when the thing actually works. The video and audio are out of sync.Tech support said it needs a firmware update that can only be performed on a PC. I bought it because it claimed to be Mac compatible which it is not. I used a Windows computer to update the Videotrack firmware and now its even worse. Hopefully Alesis will replace mine with a newer model. Something tells me that this item will be discontinued. Don't buy this thing.

Great Tool!

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

The Alesis VT is a great little tool for recording your actions and facial expressions while performing. I now where sunglasses! I did find that holding VT in your hand while recording picks up every push, squish, and rub of your fingers so use a stand(comes with mic stand adapter)The 3 mic level settings work well once you get a few takes under your belt and learn which works best. One feature I really wish this had was the ability to record AUDIO only and bypass video when not needed!!!!! so simple but missed on that one Alesis. I do agree the on/off button is a bit of a pain. The black Friday price was fair but I would not be satisfied with the full price for what you get. All in all if you can buy the VT on sale do so.

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

My band is always happy with our musical performance, but we thought we were having trouble really grabbing audience attention, and thought the visuals were the problem. Probably a few different mfg. dates on these...

By Big Jack Blass land his bad bass

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

I bought mine on Black Fri. for $79 and just took it out of the box two days ago. First thing I noticed was that when I turn it on, it ALWAYS shines its light for about a second. Nothing about this in the user sheet. I am wondering, why?? Sent a email to Alesis support after registration and am waiting for answer. The reviewers are correct about the Cra**y video quality...it's too grainy for anything. I took a sample vid. and hooked it up to my LCD/LED TV. The sound is very, very good. So, one out of two.If you look in the SD slot with the card removed, it will have a date. Mine has 6/25/10 but some, according to reviews, have 8/25/10 (well, they ARE June and August, not certain about day since I don't have it with me.) And if you really look at different vendors, the writing on it changes. Some of them have "Audio Video Recorder" written on the front. So there are obviously some changes. Just hope I didn't get the "loser, flawed, etc." model from this sale. Haven't recorded myself jamming yet, just some test video, so I want to see what that looks like. But WHY does that light shine for about a second when I turn it on? Gonna keep Googling till I found out something more about these. Don't know if I will return it or not. Just happy I didn't spend the full $200 street price. Although some places sell them for $300......who in their right mind would pay that much?

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

I got this for the $79 one day deal and I have to say that I'm happy I didn't pay more. The video is bad but I didn't buy it for that so no biggy. My main issue is that the audio is horrid. I bought this to replace my mono camera mic. Sure it might sound ok when you're playing loudly but at speaking level it has a ton of hiss and random popping. The best setting is low for the mic gain but still you get popping. If you are buying one for practices or rehearsal go for it but if you're looking to use the video or audio for anything more, save your money.

Not what I expected from Alesis!

By highohm

from Bloomington, IN

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

Thank GOD I got this on the stupid deal of the day and didn't pay full price because even for $79.00 I was WAY disappointed! First the video: I know it din't say HD or anything, but the video recorder I bought for my son at $39.00 take much better video HANDS DOWN! The audio: I think the "cool-looking X-Y incidental pair condenser mic's are for just that; looks. In low SPL invironments the audio is OK, not what I was expecting from those cool looking mic's and the Alesis name. At higher SPL even with the switchable gain turned all the way down, there is an annoying crackle in the left channel.I'm going to try and get a replacement or my money back on this terrible "Deal Of The Day". I'll tell you this; had I paid $179.00 for this. Alesis would have a very VOCAL, very ANGRY customer on their hands. They kinda do now.Don't bother with this thing, it's smoke & mirrors, NOT real engineering.

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

Just got the VideoTrack in earlier today, gotta say I was disappointed when I first took it out of the box, it feels like its made from a very cheap plastic, but it made up when I tested the sound it recorded from my drums my mind had changed. This thing picks up sound so great! I held it right next to my 19 inch projection crash, and there was no distortion on the recording! Will say this: Don't buy this to use to take pictures, quality for pictures is horrid, video and audio is great though!

Junk-Alesis dropped the ball here!

By Jessica-QaRy6

from Minneapolis, MN

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

I wrote two other reviews on another site, I gave this unit test after test, return after return, to just give up, especially after a source confided in me at the place of purchase that they have seen a ton of returns on this unit.First Unit: Would stop recording when it wanted to. Returned for new unit.Second Unit: SD Card went in, couldn't get out. Power button difficult to push on. Also would stop recording at will. Returned for new unit.Third Unit. Would again stop recording when it wanted to on fully charged battery. Assumed that maybe the battery couldn't handle long recordings (although it would stop at various times). Bought a usb power adapter. Problem with this was you can't use a power adapter while using the tripod mount..morons put it right next to each other. Cheap fix was a long bolt to extend the mount, which made the unit wobbly.. not good.. But.. Was able to record 4 hours seamless video without a drop. Yay. Next issue I brought vids into pc using program and noticed synchronization issues between video and audio. I tried several things then when back and watched the video on the unit itself and you could see it going out of synch on the unit. Another issue was that you could hear some "skips" in audio.. like a CD was bumped.. So I did another test recording my drummer while watching the counter.. and sure enough, I watched the counter skip numbers several times.I have brought this unit back as I think, 3 strikes, your out!!! Alesis should spend a little more time making a quality unit than spitting out a pile of doggy doo. As you can see by my reviews I gave this unit a fair shake, I WANTED it to work, and I am sad that it would not. I also contacted tech support, and two times I got no response, 1 time, they said they couldn't duplicate my issue in their office. It is obvious that Alesis did not do any type of test market before putting these out. If you buy this, YOU WILL be the guinea pig my friends. If you have a 30 return policy, be SURE to test yours up down and backwards to make sure you can get your money back if it fails to meet your expectations.

Just picked one up

By Musician, Amatuer Vidiographer.

from Atlanta, GA

Comments about Alesis VideoTrack:

Just picked up the Video Track from Alesis, several things I love several things about my Video Track, the size is perfect, the video quality is good and the sound is excellent. It is very easy to carry around and it comes with a mic stand adaptor in the box which is great for steady recordings. I bought a 16gb card so it holds over 5 hrs of video, another thing I like about my Video Track is that it takes still photo's with flash which also works as a video light to record in low light situations. I feel like I got more than my moneys worth!
