OVERVIEW

Combination handheld HD video recorder and linear PCM audio recorder.

The DR-V1HD is a combined HD Video Recorder and Linear PCM High-Quality Audio Recorder. TASCAM has long been among the top leaders in home and field recording for decades and has always been focused on creating easy-to-use, versatile products. TASCAM introduces yet another addition to this long-trusted tradition, providing a 180-degree rotating camera and microphone set at the top of the DR-V1HD along with specific feature sets and menu operations ("White Balance" features and still photography mode).

The DR-V1HD is encased in a sturdy and solid structure with an ergo dynamic design. TASCAM has continued their same sleek look as previously released handheld recorders and made sure to utilize rotary volume control for fine-tuned and quiet input level adjustments. The layout and controls were designed to decrease any unnecessary handling noise and produce stable filming operation.

Every detail was considered when TASCAM constructed the DR-V1HD. The mic placement structure was designed to rid any possible electrical noise and it records up to 24-bit/96k audio. TASCAM included their iconic "Variable-Speed-Audition," and offered the ability to link any audio file on the device to still photographs. The DR-V1HD supplies HDMI out and a standard 1/4-20" mount for use with a tripod. TASCAM has added a distinct and important new addition to their increasingly popular family of handheld/field recorders with the DR-V1HD.

FEATURES

I love this device. I use it in the studio to make quick recordings to see how I sound, and the audio quality is excellent, plus the video gives me important info regarding which guitar or mic I am using so I have a record of my setup. However, it uses batteries quickly, which wouldn't be a problem if it had a rechargeble battery (like an iPod), but it uses 3 AA batteries. You can buy your own rechargeble batteries and/or AC adapter, but in this day and age this sort of device should have a built-in battery and come with an adapter. Other than issue it is a great little device, and I absolutely love it.

The other reviews on this about the poor video are pretty accurate. I've posted a YOUTUBE video, using this camera so you can see for yourself. This was shot with flood light, lamp in well lit room on cloudy day.

When I'm looking at equipment I always find the youtube videos very helpful so, I thought I'd post one for others looking at this product.

Poor Picture Quality need AC Adapter

Comments about TASCAM DR-V1HD Handheld Video / Linear PCM Recorder:

Got this for 50% of the current price during Stupid Deal of the Day because I liked the idea of getting nice stereo sound with HD video. The only thing HD about the video is the 16:9 aspect ratio that you get. The picture is really bad and grainy especially in low light. It doesn't come with an AC adapter and it eats batteries like mad! The Tascam adapter is pretty expensive but I found one with the same specs online for half that. The included card gets you about 20 minutes of HD so you definitely have to buy another one of those too. The file format is also not compatible with my current video processing program so I had to switch that too. The sound is good and it was really cheap so I am going to keep it but I would return it in a second if I had paid the current price.

Comments about TASCAM DR-V1HD Handheld Video / Linear PCM Recorder:

Unit tested a minimum of 30 recordings in several environments / distances. Most common mistake made was the internal adjustment settings that enhance quality of recording, once I figured that out, the sound improved dramatically. The video quality compares adverage at best (it's OK), not nearly as good as my phones. What killed it for me is, it's not user friendly,I can make better recordings without it and it eats batteries. My first regretful music related purchase ever.

Comments about TASCAM DR-V1HD Handheld Video / Linear PCM Recorder:

I bought this on sale as a cheap means of recording bands playing live. Never got to use it... I powered it up, made a small vid to insure I knew how to use it, turned it off. Next time I powered up, batteries were dead (they were not dead when I turned it off). So I replaced the batts with some good Duracell alkalines... loaded up in the afternoon for an evening gig. Arrived at gig that night and unit would not power up, dead natteries. So it was killing batteries with the unit not even on! Yes, the HOLD switch was on when idle. Completely unusable, returned it.

Comments about TASCAM DR-V1HD Handheld Video / Linear PCM Recorder:

This Tascam DR-V1 unit is poorly designed, does not come with editing software and does not save to MP3 or MP4. However, my main issue is that simultaneous Audio and Video recording are not possible; they MUST be done separately one at a time. The Tascam literature suggests this is possible.

Hence, this defeats the entire purpose for buying a unit that does both. A better option / unit is the Zoom Q2HD Handy Video/Audio Recorder. My suggestion is to read the specs and details on any unit of interest.

          good device

          from ocean city,md.

Comments about TASCAM DR-V1HD Handheld Video / Linear PCM Recorder:

i feel compelled to review this device due to the multiple negative reviews.
at nearly 60 i decided to pick up playing drums
again which i quit at about 15.
i bought this on the stupid deal
          to record my sessions.
i had been using my camcorder, which i found
          unsatisfactory for audio.
this device filled that need, with very good
          audio.
one needs to take the time to delve into the
settings to find the proper setups.
          it isn't a user friendly device,but will
          reward the non lazy.
the video is acceptable, but this device
is for audio,if you're looking for a cheap
          camcorder,look elsewhere.
          of the various complaints
          1. it is hardly rare for one to need to buy
          a memory card.
2 batteries-i use rechargeable batteries in all
devices i own that need batteries.
          i have a powerex recharger,and powerex batteries.
you do need well charged batteries.
i get 2 1 hour sessions out of the batteries.
          a semi legitimate complaint.
3.you can record audio, and video at the same time.
another person who didn't take the time to
learn how to use the device.
this is an an excellent device, and i highly
recommend it,for the stupid deal price, not at full price
          though.

The device works great if you take the time to actually read the directions. Many of the negative comments are untrue. The device records video and sound perfectly. However it is not 1080i. That being said 720 video is very good quality. The videos can be dark if you do not set the camera settings correctly. Also indoors a little extra light helps alot. Over all this is a very good camcorder.
