OVERVIEW

Brilliant stereo recording... now with HD video.

Zoom brought unrivaled stereo sound to your movies with the Q3 Handy Video Recorder. Now, with the Q3HD, there's only one handheld camcorder that does it all in 1080p. The Q3HD Handy Video Recorder takes Zoom's renowned audio technology and combines it with HD video, allowing you to capture every moment with stunning clarity and resolution.

It's an HD World
With the Q3HD, it's never been easier or more fun to shoot great videos. Select 720p or 1080p for amazing clarity and detail no matter where or what you're shooting. It also includes two standard definition (SD) formats for those times when a smaller file size is needed.

With a new lens and imaging sensor, the Q3HD captures exceptionally clean video that is compressed with the high quality H.264 video codec. It also has a larger aperture, which lets more light into your movies. And with its 4X digital zoom, the Q3HD gets you closer to the action.

Turn it sideways
Zoom made on-the-go viewing better than ever with the Q3HD. Simply turn the camera on its side and press play. Watch your videos anywhere with its "widescreen" color LCD screen and built-in reference speaker.
Bring up the lights.

With the Q3HD, you can choose among three different lighting settings. This makes shooting video in challenging lighting conditions easy. For most situations, choosing "Auto" will give you the best, clearest results. You can also select "Concert Lighting", which will automatically adjust for rapid changes in stage lights and compensate when the stage goes dark. Choose "Night" for maximizing any available light in the lowest light conditions.

Sound makes the movie
The Q3HD uses the same microphone capsules as Zoom's industry-leading H4n Handy Recorder. From live musical performances, rehearsals and recitals to journalism, education, sports or travel, the Q3HD's pristine audio is so realistic your movies will transport you back to the moment, to relive over and over again.

With two on-board, studio-quality condenser mics configured in a wide 120 X/Y pattern, the Q3HD gives you true depth and stereo imaging, making your movies sound as if they were recorded on a Hollywood soundstage.

The Q3HD also displays audio meters, allowing you to quickly monitor and set your levels. Set the gain to High or Low to record in soft or loud environments. Or use the Q3HD's Auto Level to automatically set the right recording level for any given situation. And now with two settings for Auto Level Gain Control, we've made it easy to get great sound no matter what you're shooting. For outdoor shoots, we highly recommend using a windscreen over the mics.

HD Movies out of the box
The Q3HD is packaged with everything you need to make your movies right out of the box. It includes a 2GB SD card, HandyShare editing software and two AA batteries. With a 2GB SD card, you can record up to 45 minutes of HD video. The Q3HD will also accept SDHC cards of up to 32GB for a staggering 7 hours of HD moviemaking.

Accessorize your moviemaking with the Q3HD Accessory Pack
To further enhance its versatility, a Q3HD accessory package (see sku # H70240), including a soft shell case, windscreen, AC adapter, HDMI cable, AV cable and tripod, is sold separately.

The Q3HD brings HD video and audio together for great looking videos that sound better than ever.

Great fun product....easy to use...proven ruggedness...very few flaws ZOOM..good stuff
A- Definitley love this...Q2and others love it to...it is quick access for a songwriter that wants to use just the MP3 sketchpad function

Whoa! BIG,BIG problem though....this is way to easy to accidently erase ALL files in a heart beat one stroke error. Roland always makes you jump through several hoops to dump any audio file on their recorders....smart move....like a prompt that says "are you sure?"...has saved me many times...not so with this unit ....one false move and its ALL gone

It is plastic...but very rugged based on my first use in LA...I dropped it (kind of hard to hold) on my first video attempt five feet onto concrete block pavers. I have a perfect audio/video record of my clutzy move showing me reaching back down to pick it up (it was still recording) ...big bruise mar on the corner ...but a year later is still running great!!!

When deleting files (e.g. file #12) it needs to return you back to the last place you were ...rather than having to toggle all the way back from file #99 (if you had 99 events recorded)..... to delete files #13 and #34
This is a Q2 soooo the video is mediocre...but sound is awesome
Easy..quick upload and transfer of files to computer with onboard USB connection
Easy plug in to TV viewing
Great value given the audio quality and ease of use for a songwriter

I bought my Q3HD in June of 2011.

There are so many things I want to say about this product, but in a nutshell, I think the audio is superb, but I think the HD video is a little so-so. If you need more info, read on.

There is an option on the camera to turn off the video, and just record audio, and i use that option a majority of the time.

I use my Q3HD to record tons of things, including my own music and live performances.

I record my songs in my basement, with drums, guitar, and bass. With the drums, i put the mic right in front of the entire set with the audio setting on low, and everything picks up just nice. I prefer to record everything with one great mic, rather than a mic on every single drum and two overhead mics. A majority of people like the latter strategy, but I think this mic picks up the toms, bass, cymbals, and snare almost perfectly by itself.

With guitar and bass, I turn the amps up high and put the mic's setting on low, and place it about a foot in front of the amp. This works just great.

I have gone up to North Shore and recorded the waves on audio, and it came out great. I've also recorded zoo noises, nature sounds, beach clamor, mall clamor and conversations/interviews, and the audio astounds me every time.

i have also used it as a shotgun mic on my fiancee's Rebel t2i DSLR camera, and the final product is professional quality.

The video, on the other hand, is so-so. The Q3 video was horrible. It was low quality and full-creen looking. The Q3HD is a big improvement, giving you the option of 720p or 1080p. 720 can be recorded at 30fps or 60fps, but the 1080 can only be recorded at 30fps. The video is now wide-screen, which i really like, and i think it looks better that way. I don't think HD really applies to the video quality, though. You can still see fuzz and static in the video. It's not crystal clear. Plus at 30fps everything kind of blurs. But the video quality is still pretty good.

That being said, i wish i would have waited until Zoom comes out with the next model, where they improve the video quality again. (or at least im HOPING zoom is upgrading this thing.)

This is a great piece of equipment, with outstanding audio abilities, and pretty good video quality.

Overall i would say that you can't find a portable, hand-held camera, with better sound quality and capablities for under $1000.
You can shoot video and audio, or just audio. A built-in USB cord, an HDMI port, an in and out sound jack, and a tv jack.
I think the casing of this product is really flimsy. Very light plastic. But if you're careful, as you should be with a pricey piece of equipment, you should be fine. The screen scratches easily but you can still see everything. I would suggest a screen protector and buying the accessory pack for like 30 bucks. Comes with a protective case.

The quality of sound is unbeatable, and the video is awesome, but not quite HD quality.
I think it's an incredible value, but i would change a few things about it.

Very Good

Comments about Zoom Q3HD Handy Video Recorder:

Overall I would buy this again cuz it fits the niche perfectly. Be sure to buy the AC adapter, this thing eats batteries, maybe a few rechargeables too.
Seems to do everything I want it to, has a direct in for the Jamhub for pristine recordings.
It's light, small and delicate. Handle with care.
I don't think there is anything out there for a musician that is better for the money.

Apple Format

Comments about Zoom Q3HD Handy Video Recorder:

Yep, it's a good deal except for it saves files in Apple's MOV. format. Try finding good cheap software that will accept Apple's software. AVI, or WMV. or anything is better on Windows than ANYTHING by Apple. Consider you will have to purchase Quicktime pro, or Adobe. Also, there is no point in HD, the internet stream nor most laptops can support it. Just sayin'

Close but not quite

By dennis haneda

Comments about Zoom Q3HD Handy Video Recorder:

Not worth owning if the audio and video are out of sync.
Nice simple features. The up/down left/right keypad is too precarious.
I was excited for this device but returned it after a week because of one major flaw: The auidio and video become out of sync with each other, especially in larger, longer files. Some people say that this due to the included Handyshare software, but I found it to be a problem even when viewing the files with quicktime. I could have lived with the cheap plastic but this is unacceptable so back in the box she goes.

Worth every penny!

By Eric Palmer

from Midwest

Comments about Zoom Q3HD Handy Video Recorder:

All in all, for the amount of money spent on the Q3HD was well worth every penny. I got exactly what was described and more. The unit is even better when you purchace the extra's kit. Very nice tri-pod and an a/c wall adapter.
I search and searched. I read every review I could find. Most of them said the audio is great and the video is lacking. The audio is great. I used it at a show two weeks ago, and even when our live sound was lacking the recorded video sounded great. Also, a great feature is the fact that it will start a new recording when the max recording file size is reached. So you never miss a minued of your recording and the file sizes are still managable.
The video is also very good for the size of the lens. When you have a good tight shot on what you are filming, the video is excellent. If you have to have any distance (like the rear of a room where you are preforming) the video gets a little distorted and blurry when shown on a mid to large sized t.v.

dissappointed

Comments about Zoom Q3HD Handy Video Recorder:

Save yourself some money and buy a Flip. I've used them both for live band performances and though the Zoom has a slightly better sound recording, it's not worth the extra 100 bucks. And the Zoom sucks the life out of pair of double A batteries in no time compared to the rechargable Flip internal battery. The positive reviews of this sight influenced my decision to buy this product. But I'm guessing none of these reviewers have ever used a Flip.

Disapointed

By ScreaminEddie

from Oxford, Pa

Comments about Zoom Q3HD Handy Video Recorder:

The Zoom Q3HD has easy to use features such as the menu selections that direct the use to function settings as well as the buttons for selecting those functions. The sound quality is great and it has choices for audio so you can get the type of recording sound quality you desire. The video on the other hand is not as good has other HD video recorders I have used like the Flip Mino HD. Set at 720/30 the picture is soft and not as sharp as it should be for the cost of the device. Uploading a file to youtube with the HadyShare software that comes on the 2GB SD card is easy. The editing functions of the software should be better and the lack of true file info makes it hard to know exactly what the video/audio properties really are. The problem with the upload to youtube is the audio is out of sync with the video. The audio was recorded using AAC so it should meet the youtube criteria. I hope Samson can resolve these issues or it is useless to me for promoting the band. When will a company deliver a quality digital recording device at a reasonable price? If I could I would take Cisco's Flip Mino HD video and morph it with Samson's Zoom Q3HD audio and have the product everyone would want.

Lovin it!

By Rachel Coats

Comments about Zoom Q3HD Handy Video Recorder:

Awesome. The video recorder that delivers a polished final product.. with little to no editing required.
So far the Zoom Q3HD has really delivered with what it aims to do. The clarity of the picture is pristine at 1080p.. not to mention the auto balance setting for the mics is especially handy. If you're in a windy environment you'll want to get some sort of a wind screen for it.. otherwise it cuts down your overall volume quite a bit. Without any extra noise it does a fine job auto configuring the levels. It's really easy to upload to a computer as it has a usb cable configured into its design. Wouldn't want to move around to much with it though as it is a VERY short cord. It has a miniHDMI out on it as well.. but it doesn't come with the cable. You can find them around $30. You'll definitely need a larger SD card for it if you plan on recording anything at 1080p more than an hour. Be aware that this thing is a battery hog as well, so either stock up on AAs.. or get the 9v adapter. But still.. all those things aside.. it's totally worth the money.
Shell of the camera is made with a soft plastic.. so if dropped I could see it shattering fairly easily. HANDLE WITH CARE.. and get a good case for it.
You just can't get an HD camera with the audio features that this one has for anything less than what you pay for this.

Q3 is a winner

Comments about Zoom Q3HD Handy Video Recorder:

The Q3HD is an awesome little camcorder. I read the other reviews regarding the video quality and I do not agree at all. The video has multiple settings from standard def settings (non HD) and 3 different HD settings (720 @30 fps, 720 @60 fps and 1080i) On the highest setting, 1080i the i is for interlaced. It still plays flawlessly on screens that are set for 1080p (progressive) The difference is unintelligable to the human eye. Also, the Q3 works BEST when using a computer to edit and render recordings to DVD or other suitable media. There is a basic editing solution included on the sd card shipped with the Q3 but I use Magix video moviepro 17 with crazy sick results! Your computer MUST have a decent processor of say at least 2.33 ghz and be duel or quad core. This is a new generation recorder at a very affordable price. You can simply remove the sd card from the Q3 after recording and pop it right into your computer's card reader and watch the recordings. The sound settings are also adjustable as are the lens and lighting settings. It shoots very well in low light contrary to another review I read here. I have found the easist way to work with the recordings is via the sd card or the HDMI cable (that is only available separately or with the 36 dollar accessary pack) Yeah, that sucks but I guess it keeps the price right. If you have a computer with a decent to great processor, card reader or you have a video editing sofware program then this is a STEAL!! And yeas you can plug in an external mic, and yes sadly it eats batteries quickly at the HD settings But I was able to record my kid's entire basketball game in HD. It does not charge but you can purchase an power cord for it. I am a bass player in a band that plays local bars, halls, etc. for fun and charity events and the love of having a good time. So, I find this recorder to be handy, capable and fun to use. Remember in order to view HD you must have recorded that scene in HD and you must be using an HD monitor or HD TV. On the down side, the Q3 is not cheaply made but it is very light and not all that well protected if you drop it. Thats why I feel the case, strap and small tripod found in the accessary pack should have been included with the unit. Again they probably wanted to avoid a 300+ dollar price tag (299 sounds better). I hope I have helped you make a good decision.
