OVERVIEW

Recreates three of the most sought-after classic guitar amps, with three gain modes and three mic placements for a total of 27 possible configurations.

You get a truckload of great amps in one convenient stomp box, allowing you to go from clean or crunch to super-fat distortion in a flash.

Operation is simple; just choose the type of amp, from the smooth Calif (Californian), the bright, punchy TWED (Tweed), or the BRIT (British) with its incredible sustain and aggressive mids. Then select the gain mode, CLN (clean), HOT or HI G (high gain). Lastly, choose the mic placement from the three available selections. This feature is a BEHRINGER exclusive, allowing you to place the “virtual mic” in any of three positions:

(OFF X)—At the edge of the speaker cone, producing a smoother, softer sound with less midrange content
(CNTR)—Positioned at the center of the cone, for more upper mids and beefy low-end
(CLSIC)—Slightly in front of the cabinet, for high midrange content with tons of definition

We’ve also included a dedicated Drive control, for adjusting the amount of gain. This control effectively mimics the amount of push applied to the output stage of a tube amplifier, from a gentle nudge to full-out, tube-melting overdrive. Further tone shaping is provided by a highly musical 2-band EQ.

The GDI21 can be used for direct recording output, with speaker simulation or, when used in bypass mode, as a superb active DI box. A 1/4" output jack is provided for connecting to your amp and the gold-plated, balanced XLR connector will link you cleanly to the front of house console. Ground loop problems are nonexistent, thanks to the onboard ground lift switch.

Whether you use it on the stage or for recording, the GDI21 is the ultimate choice for musicians seeking an extremely versatile array of time-tested, classic tones. With the GDI21, you get the sound of three classic guitar amps and a superb DI box, all for the price of a single stomp box!

Comments about Behringer GDI21 V-Tone Guitar Driver DI Guitar Amp Modeler/Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box Effects Pedal:

I had the original pedal this is modeled after years ago. For what I paid it was awful. I may have had a bad one, though, as there were reports of ones with similar issues that I had. I got rid of it since it was unusable. I have a BDI21 and absolutely love it. Since the GDi21 is so reasonably priced I figured I had little to lose by trying one. It actually sounds better, IMO. It still requires quite a bit of tweaking, and not every preset is good. Some are simply not usable, IMO, like the super high gains. I run it to my mixer via XLR - I think that's the really the only way to use one of these. They are simply not transparent enough to use as a distortion box or front end for an amp. Through the mixer to my headphones it sounds fairly convincing.

The tweed setting is fender-y, but still kinda saggy and muddy, which was one of my complaints of the orginal. The british sounds good with my tele, but hard to get a sound that's not too overdriven. I prefer a good classic crunch and not much more. I keep it on clean, drive barely past 0, and center speaker. That's plenty of crunch. There simply are NO clean british or calif settings. The calif setting is unusable as far as I'm concerned. There is just way too much drive in these settings, even on the cleanest. In my experience recording amps I have found a little drive/dist goes a long way in the studio. I could never see someone needing as much drive as these have for recording, even for metal. That's my story, anyway.

Neither the original nor the GDI21 sounded "great" with my tele, but the GDI21 is definitely better than the original. However, I played my friend's sg-style git with humbuckers, and was impressed at the tones. It liked it much more. On tweed I got a great overdriven deluxe-y sound with the sg, and played a few songs - me going through his little PA. I didn't want to give it back to him. Looks like I'm in the market for a set-neck with HBs.

Really can't go wrong with a GDI21 at this price

Comments about Behringer GDI21 V-Tone Guitar Driver DI Guitar Amp Modeler/Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box Effects Pedal:

Watched a few videos of this thing on YouTube and saw how similar it sounded to the sansamp gt 2. Being a musician on a budget, I decided on this lower price pedal instead of spending two hundred on a more expensive sansamp. This thing has functioned flawlessly and sounds great to me. Does exactly what I needed and expected.

This pedal actually makes a good DI. It sounds convincely like a Fender amp direct into a PA.

Comments about Behringer GDI21 V-Tone Guitar Driver DI Guitar Amp Modeler/Direct Recording Preamp/DI Box Effects Pedal:

I was looking for a small footprint modeler with an intergrated direct box and speaker sim. This only game in town as far as that goes. I wanted to eliminate having to mic my Fender tube amp live to control feedback and stage volume. I use a radial ABY box and send one signal to the front of my amp onstage and the other signal to this and then to the mixing console. It works great. It also has a ground lift which is really convenient. I basically wanted to reproduce the sound of my clean Fender tube amp without having to mess around with mics. So I set this thing on the "Tweed" setting. It does the job great.

This pedal can be used stand alone or in front of a driven amp to give it more drive. It can get that Eric Johnson, Bonamasa tone.
