Damage Control Demonizer: I was looking for a direct recording device for my studio. I've owned zoom stuff, line 6 stuff - and tech 21 stuff over the past ten years and this sounds the best to my ears. Im plugging the direct out into my motu 896. I really feel like Im stanidng in front of my vintage marshall 4-12 - or a mesa. My only gripe is that the direct out isnt balanced -which makes no sense to me if its supposed to be connected to a console. Regardless - there are lots of great sounds here - and I love the fact that Im turning knobs instead of clicking a mouse or adjusting parameters. This thing COOKS and the longer its on the better it sounds. Rock solid professional tool that I doubt I will outgrow! IT only sounds like a 4-12 - but its the best I've ever heard. Its not good for speed metal - or fender style country. Every point in the gain stage is usable from the clean to the dirtiest which I have NEVER found in a device like this - and it retains the sound and dynamics of the guitar. No noise or mud or crap - crystal clear tone all the way. Incredibly dynamic - I cant say enough good things about this new toy! I'd buy any damage control product anytime and rest assured its totally pro!~
First off, I'd like to make it clear that my review is based on the Demonizer's ability to be used as a distortion pedal through a clean amp. I do not do much home recording and have other things I use, so I haven't made much use of it's pre-amp and direct-out recording capabilities.I play pretty high-gain music: metal, metalcore, death, hard rock, post-hardcore, punk, etc. The Demonizer is not as high-gain as some Damage Control samples and the name might lead you to believe. I would say this is a mid-to-high gain pedal. It definitely has an excellent tube sounding distortion thanks to real tubes, and I use it for alot of my E-standard and drop-D tuning stuff. I DO NOT use it to play the really heavy music, with which I use my LTD MHB-400 baritone guitar (tuned to either C-standard or drop-A#). I can't get enough gain out of the Demonizer for this for my liking.One downside when playing this higher gain music with the Demonizer is that I have the Drive kranked and the Nuclear mode engaged. This means there is NO headroom at all. It sounds good though. I use a Damage Control Solid Metal when I need monster gain (side note: the Solid Metal is amazing).I use this pedal in front of a Randall RH300 head and a Randall RS125CX cab (2x12 & 1x15), often with a Boss GE-7 equalizer pedal and a BBE Sonic Stomp in the loop.Ultimately, this IS a great pedal if you play fairly high gain music, but two things to consider, and may not be true for you: 1) doesn't sound great to me using low tunings; and 2) can get a fair amount of gain but it's not ridiculous.Would have been nice to have a dedicated low and mid control, but the ability to boost a particular frequency using the Pre-EQ knobs is cool, as well as the Scoop.Again, a great distortion box. It can also be used as a CLEAN pre-amp is you want some variety in clean tones (sounds awesome), and is particularly great if you play classic rock and alternative. Can't afford that expensive tube amp and don't NEED a ludicrous amount of gain (it's dumb to use too much in a live situation anyways, in my opinion)? Get the Demonizer.
I was primarily interested in the Demonizer for use as a direct recording preamp. I've owned several Mesa Boogies and loved their distorted tone, and I've used Line 6 modeled amps because it's been relatively easy to get a good recorded tone with them. This thing is a whole new animal, though! It's distortion is not exactly a Rectifier tone, but it's not far off and it might not even be worse. Modeled distortion simply cannot come close to this. It's night and day. A pleasant surprise was the fullness of its clean tones and the range of sounds you can get with it. I particularly like it's semi-dirty tones.Some users have noted the noise, and it is noisy in nuclear mode in the last 1/4 of the Drive range. But it's nothing a good gate can't handle. If you are willing to spend the time to tweak settings to get just the tone you're after, I doubt you'll be disappointed. I'm certainly not!
This is a genuine valve preamp and the sound this thing can produce is breathtaking! I'm selling my modeler as it can't hold a candle the Demonizer.
Above average distrotion pedal? Yes. The best there is? No. The compressor doesnt do anything besides take away volume and gain when turned down. The treble can get out of control, and the pedal can get noisy. It also sounds thin under some settings. And the input screws can get loose if you plug in a heavy duty cable. But it has pros too. Besides its feedback, it sounds realistic with the gain cranked up. It somewhat resembles real tube distortion. If you eq it just right, this pedal can do the trick. But otherwise it has its flaws.
This is a high class distortion pedal. I run this through my Boss GT-8 (distortion on the Boss is horrid) in a effects loop and OMG! Because the GT-8 has a amp modeling preamp I can gain almost any tone I want. I don't think you can achieve any sound without some tone modeling preamp like the GT-8 or the Vox Tonelab cause I tried, but the tone is definitely all pro. I'm getting Black Sabbath & David Gilmore sounds here.
I've owned many distortion pedals, starting with the bog standard Boss in orange, and I would have to say that this is (hopefully) the last pedal I will ever buy. Some of the others were nice (the Marshall pedal with the mid scoop was great) but this thing has a warm, organic distortion unlike any of the others. Some of the controls seemed to do very little when turned this way or that, but the basic sound coming out was simply head and shoulders above the rest. The other boxes sound like signal degraders afterwards - and, after all, that's basically what they are. The Demonizer gives you a natural kind of overdriven signal, so that when you play harder or softer, the sound changes along with you. Consequently, your dynamics don't get lost in some generic fuzz tone. Keep in mind what I said about some of the knobs being rather unresponsive; otherwise you won't be disappointed.
First off, This is REAL HIGH QUALITY TUBE SOUND. I run a peavey XXL transtube that is hardly tube material and a Randall 2x12 1x15 cab with Emenice speakers. so I picked one of these up thinking it would help my sound out a little bit, Not expecting it to sound exactly like a tube head. When i plugged this thing in i was incredibly shocked at the tone and versitility of this pedal. This thing has BALLS! Any tone you want, you can achieve it with a few turns. Its got a nice warm tone when cleen, and a very tight high gain when drive is turned up. This pedal is loaded with 12AX7s tubes!! Overall, this isnt a pedal, in my opinion its a peavey 5105.
You all know the search for your individule tone seems to be a life long struggle. For the last 18 years I have been searching for the holy grail of tone, and now I have finally found it. I have had vintage a Marshall JCM800, a Metaltronix TL1000, Peavey 6505+ and a host of other heads in the past. I have gone through just about every friggin' distortion/OD pedal out there. I was under the assumption that I was going to have to mix and match and just settle for what I have. Then I came across the Demonizer. I read the description on this site, and then visited the Damage Control web site and after a week of consideration decided to drop the money on this. Yeah guys it is a little pricey, but holy crap man. This is the most amazing, sickest, meanest, grinding tone machine I have ever used! When it got to my house I tried it with the most simple setup. Dime WAH from hell into Demonizer into to BOSS NS-2 and finally into a Crate Power Block to my Peavey 4X12. Total Tonal Bliss! There is nothing this pedal/Pre-amp can't do. You can go from The Eagles to Sepultura in a few knob twists. The tone in unreal. It is built like a tank too. If someone tries to take it from me I can just hit them with it and knock them out cold. I will get a second one as a backup just in case. It is just so amazing. Yup.... I found my tone.
I am not one to glamorize reviews due to the fact I bought it, or smash them, becasue I didnt like it. So Ill begin at the top of the list.It has some of the coolest features you would want, including compression, and a versitile eq. It has beautiful overdrive, and when clean, it will not distort at all. The tubes inside provide rich tone and smooth sustain.Quality wise, I really havnt taken a jackhammer to it, so I wouldnt know. Im in iraq now, and deployed with a coscom unit. So with all the moving and whatnot Ill have to do, the test of time will be when I move ack to germany. Is it worth 300? Well, thats up to you. I dont think so, but its defanantly worth about 225. I dont like the fact that they have the knobs labeled so poorly, but it does its job. At least be thankful for that. Overall I rate it an 8, and am not ashamed to say that it now replaces my metal zone and amp modling pedals for live and recording functions.
