OVERVIEW

A brand new overdrive from EHX with tons of definition and headroom.

Tone aficionados kept telling EHX's Mike Matthews about a pedal that had achieved a lot of buzz because it was only obtainable at an exorbitant price. That pedal was the Klon Centaur.
A believer in bringing great tools to starving musicians, Mike tasked his trusty team to create an affordable alternative, and that is how the Soul Food was cooked up.

The Soul Food delivers transparent overdrive with great touch and response. Its circuitry features boosted power rails to provide abundant headroom and increased definition. Best of all, you don't have to be a rock star to own one!

FEATURES
  • Transparent overdrive
  • Boosted power rails for extended headroom and definition

Just got it today and you can Believe the hype. This is the best sounding distortion pedal I've ever used. I will add this caveat, I don't use many effects and never have. Until now the Maxxon OD9 was my favorite. I have, so far, used it on a 50 Watt JMP Mk 2 Master Model and I can only describe the sound as halfway between dimed JMP and the best sounding overdriven Orange amps. Its uncompressed with a fat midrange boost and a smooth, juicy saturated grind. The treble knob is actually useable across its whole taper. It made the neck pickup on my VOS Les Paul sound great at full on saturation levels. I tried it on a Fender 6G3 Brown Deluxe Clone - this is what I always hoped that amp could sound like "Brown" is the word. EHX products are high quality and made the USA. Do I recommend this pedal ? I will use up my next 5 recommnedations on this pedal

This pedal blew away all my other overdrive/distortion pedals really quickly. It found its way on my pedalboard in a few minutes. However, it "broke" down after 3 months of playing. The "ON" signal works, it's when I want it "OFF" it kills the signal... I contacted EHX, their customer and repair services are really not impressive - in which they asked me to mail the pedal to Europe to have it fixed at my expenses... for a low value pedal? no thanks, I'll simply buy elsewhere. I really enjoyed those 3 months, but the lack of quality built and customer service turned me down to EHX products. If EHX wakes up and build their pedals stronger, I will recommend the Soul Food... Until then, I suggest you to spend your money elsewhere

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought this about six months ago, and, although it's got some nice sounds, I never really found a good use for it. The pedal worked decently as a clean boost, but the drive was only "okay" and gave me just a little too much noise to find myself using it all that often. The treble boost adds some nice harmonic edge, but it too adds quite a lot of noise along with it (which very well may depend on your rig). To put it in perspective, turning the treble above 2 O'clock adds more noise than any of my high gain pedals.

Long story short- I suggest you try before you buy. I wanted to like it a lot, but using it as a clean boost never really knocked my socks off, and I was left wanting an OD with more gain options and a little more "beef". If you try it and love the clean boost enough - you might as well buy it, but I'd say there's a decent chance it just won't sync up with your style and/or gear.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I'm very fussy when it comes to overdrives and I really like this pedal. I've never played the overdrive that inspired EHX to launch this pedal so I can't say how it compares. What I can tell you is that it sounds much better to my ears than my Fulltone OCD at half the cost. The boosted rails for increased headroom is what sold me on it. I love the sound of pedals running on higher voltage and you get it with the Soul Food running on just 9-volts. I have a MXR Distortion III with a 18-volt adapter juicing it. I played both, side by side. If you didn't know better you'd think the Soul Food was running on 18-volts as well. Very nice. It was close but my MXR Distortion III has a slightly beefier tone which I prefer. Since my board only has room for one drive, the MXR stays and I'm putting the Soul Food away for safe keeping. I may pull it out once in a while. Since it didn't bump my MXR out of it's spot I'm giving it four stars. This is a great drive at a fantastic price and it's a keeper. I can't say the same about my OCD.

Love the tone of this Soul Food pedal. My personal preference. This is the Overdrive sound I like and have been looking for. Very slight drop in lower frequencies but that ends up giving it an even sound. Can be used as a clean boost. Can get a good chunky overdrive sound with drive turned up. Not a heavy distortion. I use it before my Boss Distortion pedal and it gives a good soak. Not a fan of heavy distortion except as an occasional effect, so this pedal suits my ear. I play blues/country style.

I was hesitant at the price but super impressed, I cant find bad setting. I have used it on my Princeton, 5150III micro and HT-40 club and it delivers all the soul food you can eat. It is pure magic as a clean boost or grit all the way to super hot gain. Built solid nice design and a space saver on your board. It certainly will fill you up. Don't let the price fool you it is a KLON in disguise.so if you like spice it serves it up in spades.

My review based on over 30 years of playing during which time I have owned way too many overdrive pedals.
Basically there is nothing bad to say about this pedal. It really is just fabulous. It is value priced but built with quality. It sound great with a wide range of tones from boost to blues overdrive to rock overdrive/distortion. This is not for metal. There is literally no bad sound in this pedal. It is amazingly easy to dial in your tone and the tones to be found are quite inspiring. Great pedal at a great price. Love it.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

This thing sounds crazy. I run a LP or tele into a wah, into this guy, then into an ehx reissue Big Mvff pi, and my amp is an old JCM 800 2203. Whether using for gain or volume boost, it adds a lot of clarity to the sound. With the preamp just over half on the 2203 and master close to acceptable home practice volume, kicking on the Soul Food adds a ton of sustain and the dirt is nice and clear and girthy. Seems to me that the sweet spot is volume just under noon, treble right at noon, and gain at 8-9:00. Just there with a slightly broken up setting on the amp, there is plenty of gain to tear off heads live. Kicking on the Big Mvff after the Soul Food yields a really nice more mid-focused tone, shaped like a Fuzz Factory but with the BMP smoothness I'm used to. Totally makes a pedal that is useless live into a firebreathing monster. The Soul Food makes everything better.

Great sound for a great price! As stated earlier, a nice sweet "just" breaking up sound in the Low gain all the way up to full rounded crunch and lead tones at full crank.

I love the sound of this pedal! others have hinted at another botique pedal this sounds like. It's a good investment for the spectrum of sounds you get back!

What a great OD! Even compared to expensive Klones, the Soul Food holds its own as one of the best even at a low price. Works great as a clean boost as well, and the buffer option is great. Just don't drop the pedal or abuse it, it will break easily.

BEAUTIFUL sounding, transparent distortion. You've probably seen the reviews by now, it's a Klon Klone, and it's a DARN good one. I'm super impressed with EHX right now. This pedal is SO worth it, especially for the price. It's not a heavy distortion pedal, but that's not what it's for. You can crank it and get some crunch, but it's more of a smooth overdrive pedal than anything. I have a Fulltone OCD, a Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive, and this for my overdrive on my pedalboard, and it gets way more use than OCD. I LOVE IT. You will too. Get it.
