This thing will rip your head off if you ain't careful. I listened to all the pedals that said METAL on them and this was, by far, my favorite. The noise gate is a must. Gate is adjustable inside the pedal which is a hassle but not a deal breaker. The Scoop and Gate buttons are flimsy so be careful with them and they should last. Everything else is right on. This is not a one trick pony. You get many different tones and you can even use single coil pickups. Thunderous lows and blistering highs and nice scooped sounds. I set the Gain knob at 9 o'clock. That's plenty for rhythm. Set the gain higher for leads and kick in a good high output bridge pickup and get ready to scream. I recommend this over all other Metal pedals. This is the be all end all of metal pedals. None of the other metal pedals brought out the pick attack quite as good as this one. The others are a bit mushy on the attack. I wanted my tone to cut like a knife. This pedal does just that. Very quiet pedal too.

First of all let me say that I love the sound that you will get from this pedal, and I prefer it to the boss metal zone which is the most apparent alternative, but I have to warn anybody considering this pedal that it has the absolute stupidest noise gate control ever known to man.

This pedal comes with a fairly robust noise gate. It would be a great feature, but if not adjusted right, the noise gate has the complete power to murder your notes way too early or even mute them before, awkwardly phasing them in a split second after you play them (which was how it seemed to be configured by default.) If you want to use the noise gate, and you will if you aren't a big fan of feedback and don't have an external alternative, you have to unscrew the back of the pedal, and the noise gate control is a tiny screw lodged down deep in a tiny little hole that you need a tiny flathead screwdriver to get to that I can guarantee you either A) don't have or B) will never use outside of this purpose.

If you're like me and constantly switch between guitars with active and passive pickups, I would really recommend either spending a bit more time looking for an alternative or buying a noise reduction pedal with this and turning the noise gate completely off because by the fifth or sixth time I had to unscrew this thing to tweak the noise gate I felt put off from using it.

That said, this is the best sounding pedal I could find for playing metal. If you're willing to deal with that or have an external noise gate already, you won't be disappointed with the sound.

I'm no shedder, but this pedal really opened up my imagination when trying out some heavy riffs. Totally adds that heavy crunchy sound that was missing from my chain. When I hit the button the other guys I play with were all saying "what did you just do?!! that sounds sick!" one superbad pedal!

Comments about MXR M116 Fullbore Metal Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal has the metal sound I was looking for. Be forewarned though, there is no sorta distorted setting on this pedal. If it's on, you're getting distortion. No mild overdrive or tube driving. It's not designed for that. If you want a great distortion pedal, like I did, it's perfect.

Comments about MXR M116 Fullbore Metal Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I needed something to take me into very heavy territory, but couldn't justify buying a whole new amp. While there were some more expensive options I considered, price ultimately lead me to the Fullbore Metal.

There is an enormous amount of gain in the pedal, and it doesn't "go away" when you turn the gain down. The Gain knob is there to fine-tune the gain structure in combination with your amplifier, not to control varying levels of gain. Keep that in mind if you're considering this pedal. Having said that, it does respond well to your guitar's volume knob.

The basic tone of the pedal is a little jarring in the treble register, so you'll have to work to tame that. Luckily, the pedal compensates for this by having very responsive EQ knobs. The "Sweep" knob is best used for fine-tuning the tone of the pedal to your particular amplifier.

With the Scoop button disengaged, and some patient EQ-ing, you should be able to get a deep, aggressive, smooth gain structure comparable to perhaps a 5150 amplifier, but with some loss of fidelity. (Hey, it's just a pedal, after all, not an amp!) Engaging the Scoop button, to my ears, will not do your tone any favors. If you're running through a tube amplifier, the added bass frequencies will muddy up your gain when it hits your preamp, while the added treble frequencies will have to be rolled off unless you want your tone to be shrill. However, you yourself might find a sweet spot with the Scoop engaged and the bass and treble turned down some.

The major drawback to the pedal is the fact that the noise gate - which works very well - must be adjusted by removing the back plate.

Overall, this is a very nice-sounding pedal that will give your a great high gain option. Paired with a good amp, this might be the best high gain pedal for the money. I'm pleased with my purchase.

Comments about MXR M116 Fullbore Metal Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I got this for Christmas after picking it out. I love it a lot and it has a bunch of awesome and very useful features. Like the noise-gate for instance. The sound itself is really really really unique and really good. I had trouble with it sounding like there was really high treble even if there wasn't. Like the distortion itself had an unpleasant high screech to it. I eventually dialed it right and got everything perfect and it cut that down quite a bit. I don't use the noise-gate feature although it works very very well unless you're standing right next to your amp. It's not currently in my chain right now because I backed off such heavy distortion to play a really dirty and heavy style rock with a blues foundation. However if you go look at my chain right now its sitting sideways right above some of my smaller pedals. I plug this bad boy in and play some metal when I'm in the right mood.

Bottom line, it was exactly what I was looking for at the time and I played the sheet out of it.

Comments about MXR M116 Fullbore Metal Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

If you play between the boundaries of Metal to Hard Rock, you will love this pedal! I've own this pedal for years and it has made some eyes pop and gotten me compliments from all sorts of Musicians to include professional ones. Its very versatile and can literally make any rig scream! Even very simple setups like a decent solid state amp and a cheap guitar.I found That really clean amps like Fenders, and Rolands can really make this baby shine due to its high gain and very distorted nature. This pedal is very responsive and has so much attack its insane. The other cool thing about this pedal is the built in noise gate which really helps clean up the hiss of the gain. it also has a mids scoop similar to the signature Dime distortion pedal. This definitely beats all pedals similar to it like the Boss Metal zone, the T-rex bloody mary, Dime Distortion and many other famous pedals. I love howthis pedal has can get many famous sounds like Randy Rhoads, Disturbed, Pantera, Early metallica, All That Remains, Ratt, Van Halen, Godsmack, and more. The only thing about it that some people may not like is that the pedal does have a little bit more controls than average ones and that its high gain maybe too much for some. However I found that if you roll the gain down and mess with the frequency knob and equilizers, you can get a more Crunchy overdrive sound. This pedal literally brings my rig to life and I can't find anything wrong with it. Definitely recommend getting it.

Comments about MXR M116 Fullbore Metal Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I was rather disappointed with this pedal, but that is not to say it is an overall poor pedal. I disliked the fact that MXR insists on making their products difficult to use; both this and the Carbon Copy Delay have switches that are embedded behind the plated you have to screw off. Why do they do this? This one, compared to other MXR pedals, appears to be made of aluminum. It is lightweight, but an amplifier could crush this thing if it was under one. Also, if you use a daisy chain adaptor, you will get some sparks if you make contact with the casing. I was not too impressed with the sound wither, and was actually hoping for a Boss Metal Zone tone. Oh well, you may enjoy it, it just wasn't the one for me.

Comments about MXR M116 Fullbore Metal Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I play bone crushing industrial metal in the vein of Ministry, Godflesh, Skrew, etc, and experimented for years using the Boss MT-2, DOD Death Metal, Ibanez Tube Screamer, ProCo RAT, etc, eventually losing faith in distortion pedals, preferring the overdriven sound of my Hughes & Kettner amp distortion until I found this. This pedal gives you that perfect amount of grit with a razor sharp precision that is crucial for extreme metal, and is now a permanent component of my rig. Its harsh sound may not for everyone, but if chainsaw guitar riffs are your thing, you can't go wrong with this.
