“Ultimate,” “tops,” “best,” “finest,” “most.” They’re all glowing superlatives bestowed upon top-line products. I had recently heard those words spoken in the same sentence as “Roland’s V-Session.” Knowing that such high praise is sometimes undeserved, a little throne time behind Roland’s flagship V-Session electronic drum set was in order. The experience left me groping for an even-more-potent adjective to describe this musical marvel.

You CAN have it all
As the name implies, this is THE V-Drum kit for session work. To match its versatility, you would need a veritable warehouse full of acoustic drums.

With the V-Session set, you get the unparalleled power of Roland’s TD-10 percussion sound module, even more impact from the new TDW-1 Expansion Board, the amazing acoustic dynamics of the mesh V-Pad drums, and the most natural-playing electronic cymbals available.

Serious brain power
The included TD-10 brain gets you started with over 650 magnificent sounds. Its V-Editing function uses revolutionary Composite Object Sound Modeling (COSM) technology so you can custom model every element of each desired drum sound. You control parameters like drum type, shell material, drum depth, head type, tuning, muffling, miking, and even room ambience. Roland’s literature says it’s “like walking into the ultimate drum shop and building your dream set, one piece at a time.”

The TD-10 also has 50 full drum kits. You have your essentials like “BigRock,” “Jazz,” “70s Rock,” “LatinSet,” “Fusion,” “Vintage,” and “Rock.” Plus dozens of others, ranging from “OldScool” to ultramodern. My personal favorite is the “BIG Band” set. Having the kick drum provide a walking piano bass line as the crash cymbal simulated vibes gave me a feeling of musical empowerment. Add the TD-10’s Positional Sensing technology and you have an unbelievably “acoustic” playing experience. You get a different sound timbre, dependent upon where you strike the drum.

You also get the newest version of the TDW-1 Wave and System Expansion Board With V-Cymbal Control. It features 360 all-new percussion and drum sounds. It also enhances the TD-10 module with simultaneous three-way (edge/bow/bell) triggering and Positional Sensing on the CY-15R ride cymbal. All this brain power is easily accessible with the TD-10’s well-designed controls.

Mesh is best
I believe the real secret to V-Drums’ natural playing feel is Roland’s magnificent mesh-head pads.

The patented pads were developed in a partnership with Remo, Inc. They deliver seamless triggering and yield a surprisingly natural stick rebound and response. Use the V-Pads’ precision tuning lugs and the TD-10’s V-Editing functions and you can tune and play them just like an acoustic set. The pads produce this great response while playing nearly silently. They are a session artist’s dream come true.

The V-Session Set includes three 12” PD-120, dual-trigger pads. They are ideal for snare and floor toms. You also get two 10” PD-100 rack toms. Most noteworthy is the inclusion of a KD-120 Kick Drum Pad. Add a pedal and you’ll get response unavailable with kick drum triggers . You can even use an optional double bass pedal.

Cymbals of quality
Roland’s new V-Cymbals deliver uncanny acoustic performance characteristics. The “chokeable” rides and crash cymbals mount like acoustic cymbals and pivot when struck. The CY-12H Hi-Hat has a firm center and flexible beveled edge to emulate acoustic hi -hats. It’s a dual-trigger system with individual sensors for edge and bow. The included, adjustable FD-7 Hi-Hat Controller features heel-splash sound, closed sound, and everything in-between.

The V-Session Set includes a CY-15R Ride with three-way triggering. The TDW-1 board provides selectable edge/bow or bow/bell switching. You can also use the optional CY-16R as a large crash cymbal.

A pair of CY-14C Crash cymbals are included. They feature dual triggering (edge and bow) with individual sensors for more dynamic response.

Still room to grow
The V-Session’s formidable features and component completeness make it a surprising value. Just add your favorite kick pedal, a snare stand, headphone/monitor, and a throne. It’s everything that a session drummer or performance percussionist could ever want.

But for the player on the jagged edge of versatility, there are plenty of I/Os in the TD-10’s arsenal. You can add more PD-Series pads for timbales and other sounds. Even add one of Roland’s SPD-Series Percussion Pads for world instruments, classic electronic drum sounds, unique effects, and more. The possibilities are limited only by your dexterity.
