OVERVIEW

Developed for clean and powerful kick drum and bass miking.

On stage or in the studio the AKG D 112 Kick Drum Mic is the microphone to use to clean up the dirty low down. Stays free of distortion even at high sound pressure levels. Solid and powerful response below 100Hz. Very low diaphragm resonance, relatively narrow-band rising high-frequency response at 4kHz, and extremely robust construction are other outstanding features. Also works great for bass cabs, trombone, and other low-frequency instruments.

Channel Strips of the Stars: Ronan Chris Murphy

World-class producer/engineer/mixer Ronan Chris Murphy's credits include King Crimson, Steve Morse, Terry Bozzio, Victor Bisetti, Gregg Bissonette, Tony Levin, and projects with members of Tool, Ministry, Weezer, Dishwalla, and Yes. A huge fan of A Designs Audio, Ronan was kind enough to share some of his drum-recording signal chains:

"Well all of the drums for Terry Bozzio's Jazz trio were recorded with all A Designs Audio solid state preamps. For drum overheads I used Shure KSM32 condenser mics (#270141) into a Pacifica; for kick drums, AKG D112s into A Designs Pacificas (189903). (I prefer the Shure Beta 52 (#270267) for kick but they (D112s) were pre-mounted inside Terry's (Bozzio) kick drums. Actually I have used the Shure KSM32 into Pacifica combo on tons of great drummers, including Terry Bozzio, Victor Bisetti (Los Lobos), Gregg Bissonette (Santana, David Lee Roth), and Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, Mister Mister, The Rembrandts)."

I bought one of these mics about 16 years ago... I have used it thousands of times... live on the kick drum, in the studio on the kick drum, and on bass guitar... i have used it up close to the beater and i have used it in the hole in the head opposite of the beater... you get much more attack the closer you get to the beater... if you are using this mic on a kick drum and you are not gettting a good sound, then learn how to tune your kick drum because the problem is not with this mic... the secret for getting that "huge" kick drum sound live is to use this mic and a noise gate/limiter unit to prevent low end feedback... i use a presonus 8 channel limiter/gate unit that takes up 2 rack spaces... when you properly gate and limit the kick drum signal from this mic and send it through a decent pa system, you will have no problem "bumping the room..." and the dirty low down is what gets the girls up dancing..!!!

I can't complain about the sound or low end ability of the mic. However, I have an issue with the reliability. I've owned the mic for 4 1/2 years and the DKC 29 (sound) capsule suddenly went bad (low signal, clicking sound). This mic was never dropped or abused and stored in a styrafom case between shows (basic cover band stuff). I'm in the process of shipping it back to AKG for a replacement sound module (90 day warranty). I've subsequently been told by a music dealer that they're good for only around 5 years and they start to go bad. I expected better considering this is supposed to be the industry standard and one of the highest price mics on the market.

Comments about AKG D 112 Kick Drum Microphone:

I recorded 2 CDs in my basement, voice and guitar, and my AKG D112 was my vocal mic. My son is now using it as his vocal mic - he leads worship at his church. Of course it works on bass drums: I had a 1937 L&L single tension 14x28 - the D112 did a wonderful job of reproducing that bass drum. But ya - this is one of my favorite vocal mics.

I've had this for over 15 years. Works great for recording, practicing, and playing live. It was one of the best when I first bought it, and it still is considered among the best mics for your bass drum.

Comments about AKG D 112 Kick Drum Microphone:

I have owned and used an AKG D 112 exclusively for over 22 years. Never any problems, it delivers a great "punch" for hard kickers when needed, but also works great in softer applications. I never experienced unwanted noise, is always crisp and clear. The mic has never failed in all of these years.

Great mic, I agree with all of the 5 star discriptions as well, however dissapointed for the high-end mic that it is and the price, well worth it for it's performance, that it doesn't come with a case. Even a soft case, for this $$ it should be a hard case, but none at all?? I need to purchase a case to keep this mic protected. For that Im giving it 4 starts instead of five.

I was lacking the punch needed on the kick when I recorded drums and this mic did the job. I mixed it with a shure b52 and got the sound I required.

Comments about AKG D 112 Kick Drum Microphone:

This is a great mic. USed it for home recording and it worked well. The clip confused me at first. It has a metal adapter inside of it for use with a smaller size mic stand. There is a slot across the top of this adapter which you can fit a coin in in order to unscrew it. Then it will fit on your mic stand.

Excellent kick mic. Sounds great, and is pretty easy to get a great kick sound out of. Also has lots of uses for other low end applications. The one I have has lasted for years, and I've never had a problem with it.

                D112 Or Beta 91

Comments about AKG D 112 Kick Drum Microphone:

Hi drum world. It's a common thing to compare the D112 With the Beta 52. I own both of these mics. Along with the Beta 91. If you would try the Beta 91 against the D112 you would have a sad and surprising reality. The Beta 91 will out perform the D112 in every way. As for having a bad sound man. I recommend you consider getting serious and run your own sound for your drums with your designated drum mixing board. In ear monitor your dums along with the rest of your band then send two independent signal channels 1Drums 2the band to the house mixer. A parametric EQ IS A MUST ON ANY KICK DRUM!.If a sound man or any other musician tells you different, Fire Him. Happy drumming!
