Alesis

More drums, more sounds and more stability.

The Alesis DM10 Studio Kit is a professional, six-piece electronic drum set with natural-feeling RealHead drum pads, low-noise DMPad Cymbals, the groundbreaking DM10 drum module, and a compact, flexible StageRack.

DM10 MODULE
You will immediately notice the DM10 module’s outstanding sound quality. This new drum sound module contains 1,047 drum, cymbal and percussion sounds, including many built from real samples of classic studio drums and prized cymbals. Drummers will find some of the most in-demand acoustic drum sounds from legendary drum brands, a huge arsenal of top producers' go-to snare drums, real American, Canadian, Chinese, and Turkish cymbals, and a choice selection of classic drum machine and electronic percussion sounds that have fueled the biggest hit records.

Discerning ears will notice that each sound is actually a series of different samples; multiple dynamic-level samples and articulations are all built in so as you play harder and softer, the drum or cymbal changes its timbre, not just its volume. This engineered realism is known as Dynamic Articulation™, an Alesis exclusive. You can play with or without reverb for different room sounds and enjoy a wide variety of rimshots, rim clicks and different stick-placement sounds on the cymbals. For example, a hi-hat’s sound depends on a number of factors: how open or closed the pedal is, how hard it is struck, and other variables resulting in 40 different sounds – plus foot chick and heel splash.

The DM10 module not only has a breathtaking collection of sounds onboard, it is also the world's first drum-sound module that enables you to load new sound sets via USB connection from your computer. This means that your sounds will always stay fresh, current and cutting edge. You can also use the DM10 as a trigger-to-MIDI interface for performing and tracking with software drum modules such as BFD, Toontrack and Reason, among others. For practice, you can play along with the tracks in the DM10’s internal sequencer, mix in an iPod or other MP3 player and play along. The DM10 module has 12 trigger inputs, perfect for creating custom configurations. The DM10’s top-panel mixer gives you easy access to creating custom mixes.

REALHEAD DRUM PADS
The DM10 Studio Kit features Alesis’ acoustic-feeling RealHead pads in 10" and 8" sizes. The dual-zone pads feature real mylar drumheads and real triple-flanged counterhoops for the feel you demand. The snare and tom pads are dual zone, enabling you to perform rimshots, rim clicks or assign other sounds such as wind chimes, cymbals, gongs and cowbells on the tom rims.

RealHead snare and tom pads mount on standard 10.5mm L-rods with low-slip, knurled mounting surfaces. You can use virtually any single or double kick pedal with the RealHead Kick Pad, or split the DM10's kick input with a Y-cable and connect an optional second kick pad for the pedal feel you prefer.

DMPAD CYMBALS
The DM10 Studio Kit includes a set of four low-noise DMPad Cymbals. The kit includes a DMPad Hi-Hatl, a DMPad Crash with choke, a triple-zone DMPad Ride with choke, and a DMPad Cymbal. DMPad Cymbals provide a rubberized playing surface for a great balance between natural cymbal feel and low stick-on-pad sound. The Ride and one Crash cymbal feature large choke triggers on the undersides for accurate cymbal control. The DMPad Ride also features multi-zone triggering on the bell, face and edge. The DMPad Hi-Hat Cymbal and RealHat Pedal give you continuously variable control from wide open to tightly closed.

STAGERACK
The StageRack is the backbone of the DM10 Studio Kit. With its rugged four-post design and industry standard 1-1/2" tubing, the StageRack provides supreme stability under the most serious drumming duress. The StageRack's clamps, mounts, and integrated boom cymbal arms are all fully adjustable with plenty of flexibility to securely fasten your drums, cymbals, and module exactly where you want.

You won't need tools to make most adjustments so you can spend less time setting up and more time rocking out. Large enough to easily accommodate additional drums and cymbals – even acoustic drum, cymbal, and percussion instruments – the StageRack still takes up only a fraction of the space of an acoustic kit. The DM10 Studio Kit gives you more – more drums, more cymbals, more sounds, more flexibility, and more value – to power your creativity.

I don't usually write reviews because I don't have a lot of time. I felt compelled to write this one because I think this is an exceptionally good product for the price. I have been a drummer for almost 40 years, and have played numerous acoustic and electronic kits. I have always been a hardcore acoustic kit person until I required a different drumming setup in my studio. After reading tons of reviews, I decided to try the Alesis DM10. I received my Alesis DM0 Studio kit about a week ago. It arrived much faster than expected and was well packed. The box took a good beating up the stairway to my studio as I had to hump it up there by myself. It took me a little over an hour to assemble the kit. I could have easily saved another 15-20 minutes if Alesis would have marked the parts (A,B,C, D, etc.) with little stickers in conjunction with the pictures of the parts on the assembly directions. This is simple enough to do and I don't know why Alesis did not do it? The pictures of the parts in their diagrams were not that good. Never the less, the assembly was not nearly as bad as I had read in other reviews, still simple enough to do. The first thing I did was to upgrade my DM10 module to the latest Alesis OS. This is extremely important to do initially! After my kit was assembled, I turned it on and surprise, everything triggered and worked on startup. I spent another 25 minutes adjusting the trigger sensitivity and related parameters, but everything worked great! I have been playing and tweaking the DM10s the last few days and am thoroughly enjoying it. The sounds are crisp, clear, and punchy. The sonic qualities of the samples are first rate. The tom pads respond well enough for studio use although they are a bit louder than expected. I will upgrade the heads to the custom mesh heads very soon though. The kick is solid and sturdy and works well with my Gibraltar pedal. Cymbals have a decent bounce, and I like that dual zone choke that allows you to mute their sound after a crash. After calibrating my hit-hat (10 second task), the clap worked like a charm. The frame\hardware seems to be solid and sturdy even with a good around the block pounding. The hardware has quality; it does not look for feel cheap. I got the Alesis rebate which made it a steal. Yes, there are better electronic kits out there but to get there but they go up in price by the thousands. I will be using the DM10s for recording and are a perfect fit for my studio. For the price range, the Alesis DM10s are the boss hands down.

Right after this arrived I set it up I discovered module was defective. I called Alesis technical support. After I half an hour I got someone on the phone and they confirmed it was a bum unit and told me to send it in for repairs. I paid extra to ship it and after 3 weeks of not hearing from anybody I called them again. They told me to call the third party tech company that was fixing it. I couldn't get a straight answer for a week of calling this tech company. Finally they told me a part was back ordered til January 2014 (3 months).
After hearing this news I called Alesis again and told them this problem and they said they'd mail one out to me that day. Next week I get an email saying that they have a new unit being shipped to THEM that will arrive to THEM next week and that they would send the new one when they receive the OLD damaged unit from the third party tech, which would probably take a week after THEY receive the new one. So I don't have the unit, and when I get it two months will have passed. I had a drummer coming through town ready to record stuff, but that was a no go. This company has cost me a lost of production costs already. Worst customer service. So people, run away. Also, Alesis is part of inMusic, which includes AIR Music Technology, Akai Professional, Alesis, Alto Professional, ION Audio, M-Audio, MixMeister, Numark, and Sonivox. Since it was inMusic service department, I'm staying away from all their products just in case.

I received this kit today and I am simply AMAZED with it. The setup was simple, I programmed my own custom kit in about 10 minutes. This is my new daily kit. I play and teach so it will be used a lot. My favorite kit I have ever played. Got the Pearl Demonator dbl pedal and it goes right with it perfectly. Couldn't ask for anything better!

Comments about Alesis DM10 Studio Electronic Drum Set:

This electric set does more than the Roland but is cheaper. I would buy this set again if I had to do it over again. The cheaper Roland kits have sensitivity issues with the cymbals not so with this set. Customer service was excellent when I called to get help with setting the brain so I could store drum sets. I upgraded to mesh heads in the first week. The drums are pretty loud. All you need to upgrade is 5mm foam and the mesh heads to go back on where the Mylar ones were. Then you just bump the sensitivity up on the head triggers to your liking. It took me 3 days to set up drum set, triggers, and get everything exactly how I wanted it. Now this set triggers exactly how I play. Everything is very sturdy but I don't think it would last with carrying around. You need to buy the more expensive version of this set for that it has more metal on the drum rack and such. I bought the DM10 studio and it is in my studio. Hands down the best electric kit for your money on the market right now.

Comments about Alesis DM10 Studio Electronic Drum Set:

I've been a drummer for about 16 years and I did ALOT of research on eDrums for my house and this held the most water. The DM10 meet my expectations and I'm still exploring more that can be done with it. Each drum pad (except the bass pad) is dual zoned, and any sound you like could be triggered by any zone you please. The cymbals, besides the ride, is single zone. The flagship Alesis drum module can do quite a bit. Every sound it produces can be edited and manipulated. It can do the same manipulating of sounds the Addictive Drums software can do, although it will take a little more time to go thru the module. Cross talk is ELIMINATED by tweaks thru the module. And theres all sorts of tweaks to eliminate cross talk-SO IT WON'T BE AN ISSUE. It does NOT come with a bass pedal or throne, so be sure you have those on hand. The pads use mylar skins with foam underneath and no they don't feel like acoustic drums, NOTHING BUT ACOUSTIC WILL, but they feel pretty good. I did tighten my snare head a little bit (with a regular drums key) and that helped a bit. The pads are slightly louder than the mesh heads everyone creams over, but these drum pads are about 90 if ever needing replacement, as opposed to the 350 plus for the fancy pants mesh heads. Best of all, I found a cheaper price somewhere else and MF not only matched it, but BEAT IT by 40 more! I've only begun using this kit for about two weeks and if I had another gig opportunity, I would really consider taking these out. These are awesome and EXACTLLY what I wanted in an eKit!!

Right out of the box was an easy enough setup. The hardware itself is great. Held up very well. Day 2. Turned on the kit and the kick pad no longer worked. I'm assuming loose wiring. Luckily musiciansfriend is the best and processed my return quickly and payed the shipping. The downfalls. The module would never save my sounds. I installed the updates day 1 and I still could never get it to save. Not sure if I just had a faulty kit or what. I also tried to load samples in and quickly realized that wasn't going to happen. Not to mention the noise of this kit. I might as well play an acoustic. Thanks musiciansfriend for returning it so quickly!

I have been extremely happy with this kit. I bought it 2 years ago. I lived in an apartment and needed a low noise practice kit. This one was it. It has an enormous array of various percussion sounds from all over the world. It's responsive and durable.
The one problem I have had is that it's not possible to lay the stick on the snare and click the rim, like a conventional drum. But having said that it's all good.
Too bad the one guy had so much trouble. My experience has been just the opposite.
