Unless you're into all the new electronic sounds, this machine is perfect and sounds like a real set of drums.
This is a great little box. The main thing is NOT to get overwhelmed by all the buttons. Look on the bottom of the machine for a quick start. Don't try to master everything at once. Decide on a Preset you like and stick with it through whatever songs you play that it fits until you get sick of hearing the same ole same ole. Then try something else. Go to Alesis support and ask for the FREE DVD (not advertised). Take your time and have fun. This machine has much to offer! If you order it, get 2 universal footswitches, you'll need them. Enjoy!
Nice size and feel.
Great device for the price.

Easy to use, but do not expect "real" drum sounds. The unit has that 1980s electronic drum sound quality. All the different beats add these funky little fills. It does not have a straight ahead Ringo Starr style backbeat. I was hoping for some plain and simple rock beats for recording purposes. Basically, the unit is a fancy metronome.

Comments about Alesis SR-16 Drum Machine:

I am a part-time soloist, and do some recording at home. Once set up, the SR-16 is very easy to use, though it does require some practice to use foot-switches to control it when playing live. On the down-side, it ships with no 3/4 patterns at all. On the up-side, learning to make my own (rather simple ones) wan not difficult. Once I got the hang of the "quantization" setting, things got much easier.

I waited to write this until I'd used it live. The two NP-1 foot-switches worked great. The biggest challenge is timing when to hit the foot-switch to change between A & B patterns. My regulars commented on the fuller sound over just an acoustic guitar.

Bottom line - this device does a good job of simplifying the complex task of pretending you have a drummer. I think it was a great value for the hundred and forty-nine list.

Comments about Alesis SR-16 Drum Machine:

I've owned these SR-16s for a lot of years and when one starts to get "wonky" I just buy another. I use them for many things including demo recordings. What many users don't understand is that if you take the time to get to know all the things it can do, this unit can produce sounds and rhythms that others can't tell is not a live drummer. But it takes work and practice to do that.

Comments about Alesis SR-16 Drum Machine:

This is my first ever drum sequencer. Everybody says this is the easiest machine to use, and it is easy to be up and running right off the bat. I find it has some great drum sounds if you build your own. But, to use the full power of this machine takes some time if you have never used drum sequencers before. And, a basic knowledge of note and beat value is a must if you plan on using this machine to its fullest. I think you can build any song in this unit and start from one button push and finish on its own with no other user intervention. However, I bet that 99% of the people who buy this unit never get beyond the included canned sequences and drum kits. For me, they're handy, but the cymbals are never loud enough. So, I end up building my own sequences, songs, and drum kits. And, I have constructed some really complicated songs with it in crazy time signatures that start with a push of a button and finish on their own. But, this will use up a lot of memory. But, the unit is so cheap, that you can have one for your rock songs, another for your country songs, etc. It really is like having a drummer back there as long as you know how you want it played. It really seems to be geared for live performances. Get the Roland foot pedals. You can do some neat things with them when playing live. The unit is well worth the money. But, if your new to drum machines, be prepared to spend some time with it. There is a learning curve.

Comments about Alesis SR-16 Drum Machine:

I have owned the Alesis SR16 since 1995 and it's still going strong! I just purchased a new one knowing that I'd be very sorry if it ever stops working. I play guitar and sing doing a seated solo act and while it's true that it won't do certain songs, it does most of what I need. I have at least three binders full of songs with the beats written down for live performance. I have my acoustic rig upstairs and my electric setup in my livingroom, so now I won't have to move my machine when I want to play. I've gigged extensively with it. It takes a couple of seconds between songs to change your setting, so I get around this often by listing my songs in a certain order where I don't have to scroll too far up or down to save time. Very dependable unit! I considered the SR18 but didn't feel like I needed bass acompanyment, and it probably wouldn't fit what I'm doing. I consider the SR16 to be a crucial part of my act! I have become very proficient at figuring out the best beats for my songs, and have several binders full of my songs with my settings written down. Way too much to try and remember, lol..! Have fun, and remember, everything in moderation. Keep on rockin' in the free world! It's good for ya!

My partner & I have been together now for 5 yrs. We play @ a little bar on the water weekly N the summer & have some established gigs we play every winter, so we've played out 23X a yr since we've been together.
We both play numerous instruments (banjo, violin, mandolin piano etc.) We added this drum machine N2 our act about 2 months after we got together, it has changed are hole show! We basically turned into a 2 man band. This drum machine is always in time, is never late for a gig & i only had to pay it once! Easy to use, the pre-programed rhythms are fine (i've never used the record your own track option). Worth every penny!
