After purchasing my Yamaha Beech Custom Absolute set several years ago, and being an avid Remo user for decades, I decided to try something different on the recommendation of a fellow drummer who was using Aquarian heads at the time. He was experiencing slight bearing edge problems on his kit, and was trying to get rid of a "buzzing" condition on his toms because the heads weren't seating fully. After he switched to Aquarian heads he said the problem was corrected and the "condition" went away. He also found the sound and tone of the heads to be superior over what he was using before, and highly recommended Aquarian heads.

I reheaded my new Yamaha drums with Aquarian Jack DeJohnette series heads and played them for a while. They sounded great, but the coating started to wear off in a couple months.

Next I tried Aquarian Coated Double Thins (Super 2). They sounded superb with just the right amount of tone and sustain without having to muffle them down. The only problem was Aquarian decided to stop producing them and then later came out with the Super 2s which are supposed to be the same[?].

Then I tried Clear Studio-Xs. They are nice and punchy sounding, as expected with clear heads, have a good sustain and tone, but a little too bright of a sound for what I was looking for.

I then tried the Coated Studio-Xs. They were perfect. Just the right amount of warm tone, sustain and openess, and no need to muffle them further.

Always willing to see if there was something better out there, I tried the new Aquarian Coated Super 2s for a while. They are two-ply 12 mil thick: 5 mil + 7 mil. They don't have the sustain as the first generation Double Thins had, but are still punchy-sound without unwanted overtones, and don't need extra muffling.

Which brings me full circle. I have purchased a new set of Coated Studio-Xs for the set once again, and am extremely happy with them. After all the experimenting and trying, they are decidely the best heads for my musical applications and to get that optimal sound out of my drumsthe sound I always heard in my head on how they should sound.
The Coated Studio-X is a single 10 mil ply head. It features Aquarian's patented Safe-T-Loc hoop that prevents slippage inside the hoop and doesn't detune during performances, and the 'sound curve collar' which allows the head to remain flat and conform to the bearing edge of any shell design. The satin finish is very durable and doesn't chip off. A sound ring is also incorporated around the outer edge of the underside of the head to reduce ringing and overtones.

The coating adds a little more warmth to the tone of the head, and also provides a nice surface for brushwork.
I have tried other Aquarian drum heads, namely the Jack DeJohnette series, Super 2/Double Thin, Clear Studio-X, Texture Coated w/Power Dot (snare batter head), and Modern Vintage (snare batter head), searching for the "right" head for that sound I'm looking for in my drums, and I have found the quality to be consistent with all the Aquarian heads.

Early on, using the Jack DeJohnette heads, and the Coated Double Thins, the coating would eventually chip and wear off. It seems Aquarian has greatly improved their texture coating as I don't find that happening with their latest heads.

I have never had a problem with any Aquarian head being defective, or not performing up to its expectations.
IMHO, I would say Aquarian heads are a good value for the dollar. Drum head prices are similar in range for just about any of the brands. So in being that, other features must come into play such as durability, longevity and tunability. I have found the Aquarian Coated Studio-X heads not lacking in any of these attributes.

After years of searching for the perfect drum heads I thought I might have finally them, these heads have awsome sound and feel and seem to be perfect for live sound or recording, but for some reason on my smaller drums {8-13 inches} they have a real durability problem. I have gone through six or seven head changes in a matter of two or three months and they seem to break in at least the first week. In conclusion it has been a large price to pay for quality sound.

Best Batter head Ive used on a Tom

Comments about Aquarian Texture Coated Studio-X Drumhead:

Overall, the coated Focus-X head is far and above the best head I ever put on my toms. I run a 10 - 12- 14 rack toms and a 16 floor tom. Best sound I ever had from my toms.
The coating on these heads was still looking almost new after 16 months of 2 nights a week, 3 hour gigs. The ring on the outside of the bottom side mutes the overtones yet leaves the drum with that oh so sweet amount of sustain.
You cant buy a head with better quality.
As good as any head Ive ever used and the cost versus the value ...absolutely fantastic.

    A little Sketchy, but...

    By The -ZcQj5

Comments about Aquarian Texture Coated Studio-X Drumhead:

Ok, I put these heads on my toms about 2 weeks ago. I've always been a non-coated guy, but I'm hesitant to say I'm tired of looking for that perfect head that makes your toms sound low, without the O-rings or moon-gel, that's clear. So, me being a guy who likes to try out stuff, I bought the 10,12,14,16" tom heads and the aquarian coated super-kick III not II, III (it sounds emaculate, buy it) I love the way my 10, and 12" sound, no O-rings, but, when it came to my 14 and 16",I only "like" the way they sound, and I had to put the O-rings on them, not because I can't tune, but because I just like the low end, and no other sound im my toms. But I hate O-rings because they rattle, and in a recording studio, it's no beuno, and moon-gel just makes them sound like your hitting paper, so... I'm going to put non-coated heads on the 14 and 16", because I like the way sound a little like bass in a rap song, and see how that works. Also I have to tune and re-tune these less than a non-coated head, have no idea why though. But I hope I answered some of your thoughts and concerns.

    i was surprised

Comments about Aquarian Texture Coated Studio-X Drumhead:

at the results i had with this as a snare batter. i use the clear version of this head on my toms and love them and have had the coated as a piccolo snare batter, so obviously i tried this as the head on my main snare. i was shocked to hear such an awkward pitch of overtones. and later on my piccolo snare i changed the snare side to a hazy ambassador and had a similar problem. these heads dont work very well as snare batters when paired with hazy remo ambassadors, so be warned

    sound good bad quality

    By n2dubes-2IJTI

Comments about Aquarian Texture Coated Studio-X Drumhead:

These heads pull out from the edges. I use one for 14" snare. I do not even tune real high preferring a deeper sound. The sound is very good easy to get a good sound without overtones. Used to have the same problem with Evans heads tearing from the edge. Guess I'll have to switch back to the classic Remo Ambassador if only for quality reasons.

Well, they are a single ply head...

    By The Sherminator

    from Oklahoma

Comments about Aquarian Texture Coated Studio-X Drumhead:

These heads are amazing. They make your toms growl, and require little tuning or dampening. But of course they're going to break if you put them on a snare. They're a medium weight-single ply head. I would get something with a power dot or something 2 ply for that, seeing as how the snare is arguably the drum you strike the most. I have used clear studio x and coated remo heads on my toms, and these are waaaaay better in terms of tone and ease of tuning. They make crappy drums sound awesome.

    Great sounding but brittle

    By Alamontica

    from Chicago

Comments about Aquarian Texture Coated Studio-X Drumhead:

I work at at a studio and have used these on the house drum set, which 99% of the time I'm the one playing. I have used them because they sound great and tune up easily, but they break a LOT. I don't play hard at all- low to med volume on a 13" snare. The one I have now will be my last. They break at the bearing edge when they go... and I've been through 3. I'm switching brands. A bit disappointing because the mic's love this head...

Great heads, I've had mine on for a little over 17 months, a HUGE NO-NO, but they still sound better than heads I've had before. Not to mention they keep their tuning. Defiantly buying in bulk next time.

    Sounds good but...

Comments about Aquarian Texture Coated Studio-X Drumhead:

This head sounds pretty good, but I have now been through three of them on my snare. I have a 13" maple snare, which I tune to about med-high tension. These heads cannot handle high tuning. They consistently break at the bearing edge. I can tighten a Remo Ambassador way higher. All the other heads on my kit are Aquarian, and I love them, but this company cant make a lasting snare head.

I put this head on my snare a little bit ago and if you tune it properly, it sounds amazing. It's also great for brush work.
