Great Hammer

It does have a plastic wingnut and plastic threading. Which, is pretty senseless considerig the rest of the pedal is rock-solid.

With this hammer alone, you can adjust the hammer's length, it's distance from the kickdrum head, and the angle of the hammer-head. This will make it possible for the hammer to hit the drumhead squarely. I think this gives some users the illusion that it's a heavy hammer, because a sqaure hit means a powerful hit, even heel-down. Most pedals make partial contact with kickdrums.

In relation to a traditional felt beater, this is a heavy hammer, but compare it to DW's hammers or Iron Cobra's hammers, and it's comparable weight. The easiest solution is to choke-up on the rod to lower the hammer's center of gravity, it will feel lighter.

The wingnut, which, secures the hammer-head to the pivot-joint, is plastic. I see this breaking soon. I don't want to junk the entire thing because of that, so, I plan on rethreading the screw-hole with heli-coil. It's silly that I should have to do this to a pedal that's this expensive. I think they did it to cut down on the weight, but, I'd rather have a heavy hammer than one that will break in mid-set.

PRONE TO BREAK!

I have a set of Axis dub pedals I bought about two years ago. The pedals are fine, but I have replaced the beaters 3 times and it?s due for another set. They are extremely versatile, but they are basically plastic crap. The problem I have had with all three sets is the cheap threading of the wing nut. They are always striping out and Flying across the room. The worst part about these beaters is that I have never even toured with these; they are breaking in my HOME studio. All in all axis pedals are great, but stay far away from the beaters.

these beaters have many cons. they are not sturdy, they are made from a mold so they are not solid steel therefor they break quiet easly when played at a moderate to hard stoke. i have had 2 beaters break in my time of owning the axis pedals and needless to say i wont play axis anymore.

Great Speciality Beater

This is a great beater for specific applications, and it works great, if set-up correctly.  The biggest complaint (among other reviewers) is the head loosening up.  I spoke with the engineers at Axis, who explained the photograph shows the wrong set-up.  The head (tightening knob) MUST be rotated off to the side (at either the 3 or 9'o'clock position ... simple enough)), NOT at the top (12'o'clock position), as pictured. This will alleviate ALL head-loosening problems.  I play an 18" Gretsch Catalina bass drum, and with a 'normal' pedal set-up (because the head is so small), the beater strikes too close to the top.  So, I got a Gibralter bass drum riser, which works (and looks)great, but the pedal now is too far away from the head.  The Axis Sonic Hammer was the PERFECT solution (with its adjustable head extension).  It is a touch on the heavy side, but (with the cork pad), packs a real whollop ... the neighbors are even noticing. The Axis tech suggested trimming the excess (back end) off the head rod, to save weight.  The felt pad is 'warmer' sound, and also has a slight problem: It was impossible to cleanly peel the paper off the sticky part (from the back of the felt), leaving me with no choice but to glue it on.  Also, there's no way to swap the felt/cork pads w/o ruining the stick'um.  Overall, this is a VERY durable product, which was the PERFECT solution to my situation.  It looks and sounds GREAT! The Axis people were VERY helpful, and I'd definitely recommend The Sonic Hammer.
