Superbly crafted snare performs beautifully in any situation.
The limited-edition Craviotto Bird's-eye Maple Snare is acclaimed for its unsurpassed beauty as well as its uncommon consistency, stick response, and articulation. With a tonal character that features a well-balanced blend of low-end body, midrange focus, and high-end crack, the Craviotto Bird's-Eye Maple snare drum has the quality and versatility to excel in both general-purpose and special-purpose drumming situations.
Bird's-eye figuring occurs in only a small percentage of all maple trees. As unpredictable as it is rare, Bird's-eye is random in pattern and appearance and is not created by soil, wind, climate, or other external conditions like other types of figuring such as curly or quilted maple. Instead, it is part of each tree's genetic makeup--much like freckles in human beings. This individuality of appearance complements the wood's tonal personality and makes each drum even more unusual and unique.

This Snare is a beautiful object. It came in the original box, and packed in its "Craviotto" case. The snare is very sensitive and has a "Snary" sound, not dry and not to much ring. I believe it to be better at lower to middle volumes. My personal opinion is not for "Hard Rock". But would probably work. Nice rim shots, and can get different sounds depending on where hit. Its very light. Worth trying out and is as good as anything else out there. Great Quality.
I played this snare right out of the box, without tuning, and it sounded more crisp and warm than any snare I ever played before. The tones produced go well with all kinds of music. I play various genres ranging from acoustic jazz to alt. rock and this snare responds without compromise to the individual styles. With the depth only being 5.5, you probably wouldn't expect this to be an ideal choice for harder hitters, but it's crack sounds very crisp when driven harder, definitely not harsh. It's very musical. It's sensitivity is comparable to an alloy shell, yet it's tone is immaculate and is well rounded from the low end to the high end. It's not bias of being too deep or having too much resonation (a characteristic difficult to find in a maple). It's absolutely perfect. Highly recommended and worth every penny.
As a Pro musician I wanted the best sounding drums made. Well, I was so happy with their maple snare that I went back and bought a 2nd Craviotto snare. So I use my maple for just about anything. I've use them both live and in the recording studio. I couldn't be happier. By using various heads and tunings, I've been able to produce whatever snare sounds any Pro musician will demand. These drums are built solid, great sound, and built for the long haul.
I have been playing drums for thirty years, and this snare is so versatile that it effectively replaces my 14x6.5 Canopus and 14x3.5 Noble & Cooley maple snares. Massively FAT sound. The Trick throw off is incredible, and the birdseye maple finish is stunning. If you want the best and can afford it -- this is your snare drum.
