I recently played one of these when a friend got one in the music chain he works for (same parent company as MF). It sounded good and looked really cool! First "THE GOOD": 1. The White Marine Pearl is actually a little yellowed, which makes it look old and vintage, "pre-aged" if you like. VERY sharp looking! 2. All the drums sounded good, even with the stock heads. 3. The two hole receiver bass drum mount can hold a (sold seperately) 7/8" cymbal boom arm in addition to the supplied tom arm. One less stand to carry! 4. Cool "square" 18" x 18" sized bass drum. Very verstile tuning range, to get that be-bop "ping" or the hard rock "thud". A self-muffled batter head really helps get this bass drum to sound good! 5. Very cool and "custom" looking small lugs. They look very similar to the lugs on the higher end Mapex stuff. Now "The BAD": 1. The bass drum hoops are plastic. I understand keeping the costs down, but plastic? 2. The wrap is only held on by double sided tape at one spot on the shell, so even though the kit was new there were small "air bubbles" in the wrap in various places. Those get worse through time, especially if the kit gets damp or is subject to big temperature shifts. 3. The 7/8" tom arm penetrates the tom shell. At this price I understand, but an L-arm would be better. Even if you switched to a suspension mount down the road, you still have a big hole in the tom. 4. The aforementioned double tom mount only holds the tube it accepts in one small area by a piece of plastic at the tigheting bolt. Ideally, it would be much better if it gripped the tube all the way around, like a Pearl holder, for example. 5. No bass drum lifter is included. You easily add one though for only a slight expense. 6. The floor tom leg brackets should be lower on the shell to maximize the height adjustment available, especially since it is only a 12" deep tom. I am tall and play my floor toms higher than most drummers. I had the legs maxed out on this drum, and would have liked it to go just a bit higher, though I could live with it as it was. All in all, not a bad little kit for the price. And it does sounds good; I just wanted you to be aware of the more detailed information. You could still buy two of these for less than 1 Grestch Catalina Club Jazz, and it sounds nearly as good, and with the "right" heads, it can sound as good or better!
My D3 set finally came in today. I was stoked when I finally set it up and played it!! I was looking for a smaller bass drum like this, and this thing is a cannon. Even with the stock heads the set sounds good. Perfect small kit for playing shows/hauling around. The wrap is a little sketchy where it ends but its fine. THere were a a couple small chips from shipping, but they got covered up by the rims. Overall great set, well worth the money.
I got this kit to be able to pack up quickly and move in/out of gigs easily. I love it. Perfect size for a gigging drummer. There are a few finish issues (minor) and the stock heads are junk, but this is my new gigging kit. I love it. Recommended to everyone who drums on the run.
