I have been playing professionally for 40+ years. Primarily jazz combo, musical theater or big band work. I have a 20" walnut bass drum on one of my kits that I have struggled with to get the dynamic range and projection I wanted. Experimented with heads, pedals, beaters etc. I decided to try this BD lift. Played my first gig with it and It really opened up the sound. Not sure if it was getting the shell lifted off the floor or that I could extend the shaft of my BD beater on the pedal. Now I can play from a controlled feathered touch to dropping bombs. The lift is very easy to use. Because it is not mounted to the hoop but rather the drum shell rests on it, you can position the BD pedal at any distance from the head that you desire. Works very well on my 20" bass drum and has found a permanent place in that drums set's trap case.

For the price, this thing is just a piece of injection molded plastic with adhesive padding crookedly applied. It might be worth the cost if it functioned. The problem is the pedal platform (for set ups similar to mine). I'm using at 18" Gretsch bass drum with 1.5" wooden hoops and Pearl Eliminator pedal. The pedal platform on the DBDL protrudes 3", 1.5" past the hoop. I suppose with some pedals this would be important because the linkage would hit otherwise, but that's not a problem with the Eliminator - I would work fine if the platform came out the same distance as the hoop. As it is, with double the distance, the beater must travel way past 90 degrees to strike the head, far enough to make it impossible to play the pedal. The idea is sound and I'll use the dimensions to build an improved version out of whatever hardwood I have laying around, but I'll be returning this item.

Comments about Dixson Bass Drum Lift:

This cheap and affordable lift dramatically improves the resonance of my 20" Ludwig bass drum. When the bass drum is planted on the floor, it comes out dull and buzzy sounding. The Lift takes away all of your complaints about how your bass drum sounds and makes it sound so much better. I just got this product today and I'm loving it so much! Buy this please!

Didn't work with Ludwig Club Date

Comments about Dixson Bass Drum Lift:

I have one of the new Ludwig Club Date SE "Jazzette" kits with an 18inch bass and thought this would be an excellent way to get my Ludwig Speed King to strike in the center of the drum. But..... I could not get the gull wing spurs of my club date to extend far enough to level the drum once on the lift. Maybe it works on the Club Date 20in bass, but it will not accommodate the 18inch unless you get longer gull wing spurs. Also my pedal board would not full extend when on the lift due to it hitting the hoop. Again, it's probably due to the design of the Speed King, but it would have been nice if this was mentioned somewhere on Dixon's website that it is NOT a universal solution. I will be returning the product.

Comments about Dixson Bass Drum Lift:

So the reason i got the Arti Dixson bass drum lift is to be able to turn a 16x16 inch Yamaha stage custom floor tom into a Jazz bass drum to take around. I read all the reviews and people said they have used this product to turn a floor tom to Bass drum, so i ordered it. I then came across the problem that its a little to short in height. My beater will strike the drum an inch or 2 above the center, which makes it less punchy. This product would be absolutely perfect for Floor tom to bass drum conversion if it was about 3-4 inchs taller. But other than that its perfect. just going to have to duct tape towels to make it taller!

Comments about Dixson Bass Drum Lift:

I purchased this lift thinking it would lift my 18" bass drum high enough for the beater to hit the center of the head. Not only will it not do that but the pedal and the drum are not mechanically attached so the bass drum moves away from the pedal. For me it was a total waste of money.

The bass drum lift is exactly what I hoped it would be. I wasn't sure it would work to turn a 16x16 floor tom into a kick, but it does the job very well.

Comments about Dixson Bass Drum Lift:

I use this to lift my 20" kick, and it works perfectly. I use a DW 5000 single pedal, and I didn't have to make any sort of adjustments. Just attach it, slide the lift under my kick drum, and play.

The only cons I can come up with are that, it can be harder to line your pedal up just right, initially, and that it can make your kick drum unstable if you mount something heavy like a ride cymbal to it. I always used to mount one rack tom and a ride cymbal to my kick drum. While I haven't had it tip since using the bass drum lift, I stopped mounting my ride from my kick, just in case.

The Dixson Lift looked a little pricey to me at first glance. But I spent the money and am I glad I did!The Lift is so easy to use it doesn't come w/instructions! I've been using it w/a GMS 18" SE BD. GMS bass drums usually sound bigger than their size in the first place, but the Dixson lift increased it's volume, resonance and depth by at least 25%. I'm playing the drum open, w/a coated PS3 batter and EQ1 reso. I 've played jazz gigs W/a Vater retro Bomber beater, and I'm able to play country, rock, singer-songwriter etc w/a Hard sided DW beater. Not miced. Amazing!I haven't tried it w/my 22' yet, butI'm looking forward to it. If you're thinking about buying this product, stop thinking, BUY IT!
