I HAD TWO SETS OF THE COLLECTOR SERIES AND THE PERFORMANCE SERIES SOUND AS GOOD IF NOT BETTER, THEY DONT HAVE THE INNER UPPER AND LOWER WOOD SUPPORT RINGS THAT THE COLLECTORS DO BUT MOST KITS THESE DAYS DONT, THE ONLY DRAWBACK IS IF YOU WANT TO GET OTHER SIZES, THE ARE LIMITED TO ONLY A FEW, BUT IT'S THE BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK OUT THERE AND TO STAY WITH THE D.W. quality.

I very recently purchased the DW 4 piece Performance Series drum set. I did not read a lot of thorough reviews on the set so I wanted to share my research and findings. I have been playing drums for 13 years, have a lot of experience playing live, and am currently in a gigging band. First, the set is great. I highly recommend it. I am not going to attempt to explain the sound as that is based on interpretation. I will say however that in my opinion, the set sounds phenomenal.
Here are the facts:
The drums are NOW produced in Oxnard, CA. I called DW and verified this. The original sets were constructed in the DW plant in Mexico but the plant was closed and production sent to CA fairly early on. On the inside of each drum is a blue tag that will state where the drum was made. These are mass production kits so inspecting each individual drum may be required to verify production locale.
The drums are made of North American hard rock maple. The are a very solid construction and the craftsmanship is excellent. DW calls their construction of the drums HVX. This is just an acronym for how the plies are overlapped with opposing grains. I spoke to an expert woodworker and showed him the DW diagram of how the shells are constructed. He stated that DW's method was the very best way to ply a drum or plywood for durability and longevity. However, that doesn't necessarily speak to the actual construction. But, after inspection of the drum itself, it was concluded that the shells are very high quality and construction.
The sets do not come with hardware but they do come with floor tom legs and bass drum spurs (or at least mine did). The heads that come on the set (DW/Remo's) are a high enough quality but I changed them out. They are single ply with a ring of coating running the outer diameter. The bass drum also comes with tow small pillows inside of it held in by velcro. The finish on my set (Ebony stain) beautiful and flawless.
For the money (which isn't cheap), the set is awesome. Compared to kits in the similar price range by other manufacturer, this one was the best. I looked at many other drums sets within this price range and am more than confident in my choice. It is professional quality and sound. The set is just about half of a Collector's Series but the quality is not compromised. I would recommend this kit to a serious or professional drummer. It will serve well as a gigging kit or recording. H

DW Performance Series drums are THE BEST! I played them at my local music store and fell in love. They had to kick me off them otherwise I would have played them all day! These Performance series drums are pretty uch just as good as the Collectors Series if not BETTER! I would highly recomend them to everyone!
