Instead of dampening, edge treatment tweaks the overtones and response.

EC Reversed Dot snare heads come with a unique "reversed dot" made with the same 3mil material as the ring. Each head consists of a 7mil top ply and 10mil bottom ply for maximum durability, especially with the reversed dot version (which totals 20mils thick at its center). This features the sophisticated edge control system that banishes unwanted overtones.

A translucent frosted coating lends a unique, attractive look. Despite the head's relative thickness, it has a forgiving feel; ghost notes project tremendously well; rim shots offer a "tweaked" palette of rich overtones; and center-of-the-head strokes yield fat, focused tones. The stress-relieved reversed dot patch has the unique effect of eliminating some mid-range frequencies, yielding a desirable crack in all tuning ranges.

For snare drums it's particularly effective and yields a pre-EQ'd sound that will please both player and sound engineer.

I rate this a "9" overall, because on my Ludwig 14" x 6.5" snare, I absolutely have to keep it tight. (That may be inherent to the drum; every head so far needs to be tuned high-loose just has no pop.)

I have found that this head must be hit exactly DEAD CENTER to sound right. The revese dot also has "tone rings" that interfere a bit with the clarity of the snare response if you hit them instead, and although it's the idea to hit the center, I for one like to get the ring from going off-center, but this will not support that tone without a lot of buzz (yes, my snare side is TIGHT!)

Generally, the tighter I go, the better this head sounds, and it sounds GOOD, but I bought it for the overall extra thickness and the desired effect of allowing loose tuning which ain't happening.
Lots of "features" for a drum head! Multiple thickness, coated, reversed dot, and overtone rings!
EVANS makes very high quality products; even the cheap stuff (which this ain't!)
Recently the price came down which is good.

Overall, If you absolutely positively need a new snare head then yeah pick it up. Just be warned that it's not the greatest.

      - The coating looks and feels different than Evans other snare heads. Leading to more of a ringier overtoned sound.

      - The Edge Control (EC) 'comb' will fall off in places if the drum head is hit at around the edge. Albeit, it affects the sound in NO WAY whatsoever, it just begins to look flimsy and cheap after a couple of months.
Obviously it features a reverse dot. The edge control part of the drum head isn't the greatest. The coating on it just doesn't feel "right" compared to my old Evans power center reverse dot.
The 'Edge Control' part of this drum head will fall off right out of the box if you happan to hit it directly with your sticks. Granted, it won't alter the sound of the drum head at all, it still came off as kind of 'flimsy' to me.
The price difference between this and a Evans Power center reverse dot are almost the same price, if you're going to buy a new snare head anytime soon go the extra 5 bucks, you'll be happier.

I happaned to score this drum head along with a hazy 300 snare side and a set of nylon sticks for a steal, but I wouldn't buy this drum head given a wider variety of Evans snare heads.

Comments about Evans EC Reverse Dot Coated Snare Batter Head:

I was very pleased with the aggressive sound of this head.
but the head changed the ability of my Ludwig Super Chrome snare to provide cracking rim shot sounds. I was disappointed about that.
If you can afford 2 snares this Evans head gives a louder sound but Remo Weather Kings provide better rim shots sounds.

The best snare head I've used and I've use most of them.
Sounds great on my Gretsch 10 ply maple and Pork Pie Big Black Brass.
          Very Good. Its an Evans.
Excellent. Takes a beating and keeps on cracking like a snare should.

Who'da thunk it? It depends on the drum!

          By Patrick Stacey

          from Asheville area, NC

Comments about Evans EC Reverse Dot Coated Snare Batter Head:

I bought this as a replacement head for an old Slingerland 6" X 14" snare that was inherently bright and kind of "pingy," albeit thunderous. This head was terrible on that drum; just noisy and plain bad. So I opted to set that snare aside and just play my 1966 wooden shell 5" x 14" that had been wearing a Remo coated ambassador.
A few nights ago I was preparing for a gig and just for the heck of it I switched the heads. HOLY FRICKIN' SMOKE!!! The Evans EC Reverse dot made that wooden snare drum sing!(Interestingly enough, the old steel shell sounds better with the Ambassador! )
It depends on the drum, but I'd say if you've got a wooden shell, try this head on your snare!
          It really blew my mind...
The technology is beyond me, but very effective in the right context.
          Very well-made and sturdy.

Comments about Evans EC Reverse Dot Coated Snare Batter Head:

I am so thrilled with the new sound I am considering trying my floor tom next. I have used Evans blue hydraulic heads on my toms for so many years. I love their performance, sound, and durability. But today I am considering trying this reverse dot on my floor tom to help get more natural tone without any overring or muffeling. I love the new improved sound my snare makes. I have never broke an Evans head, when I feel the head loose some punch I get new ones. Great heads.
          Very nice.
          Great new texture.
Great price. I have 20 years of using Evans heads. I have used another reverse dot and had great service from every head used, the new one is either an updated version of the one I was replacing or just one more of that reverse dot style. This made an unexpected change in my snare sound. I have a birch, PDP, with a conversion snare from a supersensative Ludwig. I have always liked the sound and the extra mesh on the outside ring along with the coarser texture of the head made a smooth snap. It is fatter, wetter but not overbearing. I don't need the damper adjusted to the head and on playback recording it is sweet. Thank you Evans, and Musicians friend.

          hit the center

          By matthew kobbe

          from wyoming

Comments about Evans EC Reverse Dot Coated Snare Batter Head:

overall this head is good the only down side is there is not much room for tuning it a specific way due to over tones or too much drum not enough snare sound. like i said before I found the st dry to be equally durable with a wide tuning range.
The reversed dot.. it provided deep crack really nice for cutting through the guitars in live gigs but it does have a sound of its own. Maybe it has something to do with the center dot equaling 20 ml thick? Not a bad head just not "my" sound. I ended up sticking with the ST dry.
The quality is great. I BEAT this thing & it showed no signs of giving up. very durable.

They changed it for the worse !

          By TBone98

          from Mid-Atlantic US

Comments about Evans EC Reverse Dot Coated Snare Batter Head:

I won't be buying them anymore.
Got 10" and 14" for two of my DW maple snare drums. I've had 14" before and liked them but... this time the 10" came like they used to look and as shown in the photo. The 14" now has the honeycombing around the perimeter like the EC-SST tom heads. It sounds like there's a sheet laying across my snare drum except for the strange, hard-to-control overtones I get. The reverse situation might have worked. The 10" needs the highs reduced more.
As usual with Evans, the quality is excellent.
The value is lousy. Gouging us like most manufacurers and retailers...especially with a petroleum-based product like this.
