For a few months I had been using a G2 batter with an Aquarian regulator resonant head on my 18x20 bass drum with ok results. The only muffling I used on the G2 side was a felt strip placed on the inside of the G2 head going vertical on the right side. I found the sound after awhile to be lacking both in resonance and low end; time for a change.

I purchased an EQ3 clear batter and a smooth white EQ3 resonant head. Both heads come built with a muffle ring. The resonant head has no mic hole. Upon tuning the resonant EQ3, I heard immediately the low end and resonance that I could not get from the Aquarian regulator (FYI, the aquarian regulator has a large felt pad glued to the center back of the head). Once I began tuning the batter head, I noticed that the low end was there but the punch was becoming apparent as well. After getting the heads seated and in tune, I took a beater and struck the batter side. There again was a nice thump followed by the lower frequencies. It was a pleasing sound; the lower frequencies did not get in the way or drown out the punch from the beater.

This is a fine head for a player wanting a little more than just the punch one gets from an EMAD. I find the EMAD deadens the overall sound too much for my taste. If you have been looking for a bass drum head that can give you the punch and the low end boom you expect from your bass drum, try these heads out.

I got this head about a week ago and was not happy with it. It doesn't even come close to the Aquarian Super Kick 2 head. I will never change from the Aquarin head again. Aquarian's head sound so much better and you can actually hear and feel what your playing. It's all up to you though, so try it and see what happens.

This head makes my bass drum sound the way I envisioned the perfect bass sound. It is powerful, deep, hard. I was considering getting the EMAD at first but I am glad I opted for this one instead.

for 40 bucks, this bass head is amazing. just add a little muffling in your bass drum and depending on how you tune it(which is super easy) you can get the studio bump or the piering thud, which i like, out of it.
i think most ppl use this as a resonant head? no need. this works beyond great as the beater side. and it comes with a little circle pad thing to make the head last longer.

This is the best bass batter head I haver set foot on. It sounds great and produces a nice deep tone when muffled. No need to be an expert at tuning either... If it's good enough for Thomas Pridgen it's good enough for anybody!

Comments about Evans EQ3 Batter Clear Bass Head:

Maybe it's the fact that I went from a stock CB batter head to this or the fact that this is an amazing head... I got this head because they were out of EMAD's where I get my drum stuff and my oh my this thing may surpass the EMAD's that I have played on in the past. It made my bass sound like a cannon. The one thing I had to do was place a blanket in the bottom of my bass slightly up on the edge of the head because after tuning it to par it still sounded a little plastic and rattly because of the ring.I also put a Gibraltar double bass Click Pad on this beast and it sounds amazing. Don't bother wasting your time triggering your bass, get this combo.

                Perfect For Double Bass Drumming

Comments about Evans EQ3 Batter Clear Bass Head:

This head has that great low-end thump sound you really want in double bass drumming, but it doesn't sacrifice any volume. This is NOT the right head for you if you want to play jazz, it has almost no sustain, but since I play punk/ska/metal/awesome, it's the perfect head for me.

This is a very nice kick drum head. But my only problem with it is that the muffling is on the fence. If you dont put a pillow or blanket in the kick drum with it, its really ringy and clamy. But with a pillow or blanket its a dead thump. EMAD 2 !!!
