I was told a few years back that if you have cheap tom shells, use a double ply head (such as the G2 clear). If you have high end tom shells, use a good coated single ply head, such as the Evans G1 coated. After examining a number of drum sets, I am coming to the same conclusion. I was never fully happy with my tom drums (with G1 coated heads), but yesterday I came across a tuning that made them come alive. I used a drum dial indicator, and the top heads are now at 73 (on the loose side), and the bottom heads at 75. Wow, I finally have great sound. If the top heads are too tight (I had them set at 75), they sound tight with too much boing sound, but loosened up a bit, they are free to give resonant tone. I was about to put in an order for a set of G2 clears, but now I won't. I think the Evans G1 coated heads are the best I can come up with for my Jeff Kirsch custom drum set with 6 ply Keller VSS maple shells.

I bought this head because I was ready to take the plunge and spend $300 on my kit to replace all the heads and I was very excited to try Evans. I bought a 13" coated G1 for my snare first. Single ply heads always work the best for my snare and I'd never heard my drum sound so good. But after two weeks the tone got really dull and by the third it cracked down the center. I've been playing and tuning my drums for 8+ years and I play off the head rather than through it. My only explanation, cruddy durability. If you have the money to replace heads often go with Evans for great sound, but if you're broke stick with Remo or try another drumhead manufacturer like Aquarian. They have some great stuff that actually lasts.

Comments about Evans G1 Coated Batter Drumhead:
So I own this drumhead, and its sound good, but it has a weird feel if you compare that head to a remo coated ambassador. The feeling on the ambassaor is natural and you can roll all over the drumhead, but with the G1, you will have plastic sound if you roll all over the head. When you hit the drumhead in the middle it feels right.Anyway, it is a good drumhead for the snare.
Comments about Evans G1 Coated Batter Drumhead:
I use these on pretty much every snare I have. They have a great open tone that is fuller and thicker than an Ambassador. I also use these on my toms, top and bottom. The tone is warm and meaty with just the right amount of sustain. On bass drum, they just roar. GrrrI highly recommend them.
Comments about Evans G1 Coated Batter Drumhead:
At first I never used evans, always remo. I had an Emperor X on my snare. It was way to dark and tom like and I couldn't tune it tight at all. I then got this, put it on my snare, tuned it about 3 full turns and already it sounded great! Not to dark, but not to jazz sounding, perfect for rock. Ill stick with remo for toms, bass, and snare side head, but for the snare batter, I with evans.
Comments about Evans G1 Coated Batter Drumhead:
There is a reason why the only head I'll ever use is an evans head. They sound great and they last forever. I've got one of these on my floor tom that came on it (heavily used set) and its got to be at least 2 years hold and its still going strong. I've also got one on my snare and it sounds great and has lasted well over a year and a half and I'm not a light hitter.
Comments about Evans G1 Coated Batter Drumhead:
This is the most consistent coated snare drum head I have ever used. They last a long time for most styles of playing and you get the same sound from one head to the next. Brings out the best in my Starclassic Birch snare without harsh overtones. No muffling required.

Comments about Evans G1 Coated Batter Drumhead:
This is an awesome drumhead! All of Evans products are absolutely incredible! I ordered this head Saturday, and it just came in the mail today. I imediately cranked it to my snare, with my Evans e-rings, and it was beautiful. I don't have the world's best snare drum, it's just a basic 14" x 5" steel snare with a good throw-off. It was very, very, very easy to tune, even with my basic drum key. This is a great head for any drummer, and it is totally wicked. This is the best 1 ply head ever made. The best 2 ply is the g2 coated ( I recomend the g2 coated for snare and toms). If you want an incredibly awesome 1 ply head, then get this head. If you want more durablility, with an even better sound, then get the g2 coated. No matter what style of music you play, you should get Evans for all your drums. I also recommend getting the Evans e-rings (they are phenominal on the toms)! This is an awesome drumhead.
Comments about Evans G1 Coated Batter Drumhead:
I just got this yesterday because my new ludwig snare came stock with this. This is a great stock head but i am kind of a hard hitter and i dont think a single ply will hold. There for i will be getting a power center reverse dot because i know it will be awesome. Great start though. It is recommended if you play strictly jazz because i am just leanring now and from what i can tell it would be great. I do play in a rock group and do a lot of SWEET JAMS so i need more durability.
Comments about Evans G1 Coated Batter Drumhead:
I have used this head with my friend's old Pearl drum set, on a Tama wooden snare drum. The sound on the snare was great!! It had a great tonal range, it was really loud, and had a nice solid crack!! I recomend the Evans G2 coated, it's more durable and has a slightly better sound. But this head is awesome!! Great buy!! :-)
