Comments about Evans J1 Etched Drumhead:
These heads are the perfect match between clear and coated.
I've used them for years for every and all purposes.
If you want a warm sound with a little life and don't pound the hell out of your drums (though they will hold up rather well) then these are what you want.
Love em!
Comments about Evans J1 Etched Drumhead:
These are great heads, I wish more drummers bought them and maybe they would put them back in the packs of 3. They make my drums sing, sound great and feel great hitting them.
They have a warm sustained sound that has good attack. The sound is crisp and clear and even. Sound great on on my Trick aluminum Be-Bop Set and my Gretsch Maple Fusion set.
The texture on them seem to wear off pretty quickly, but they still sound great as the texture wears off. I wish it didn't wear off so quick, but they are still high quality heads.
These are not cheap heads. They used to sell these in packs with assoreted sizes but they do not anymore. I bought a few of those packs when they were on sale, I wish I would have bought a lot more and stocked up a lifetime supply.
Comments about Evans J1 Etched Drumhead:
I tried the J1 Etched on my Pearl Sensitone Steel, and it really changed the tone! The first thought that came to mind was that my snare sounded like the old classic snares from decades ago. Now, whether or not you like that sound will determine whether these heads are for you or not. These heads are quite resonant and ring quite a bit (ring is such a negative word though... I guess you could say they "sing"). They're pretty warm and have a crisp attack. The coating doesn't chip away either, but I haven't used them long enough to know if the head will stain over time. Overall, I think this is a great head if it fits your style. For me though, I think I'll stick with Remo Ambassador and Evans G1 for my snare.
Comments about Evans J1 Etched Drumhead:
I put these heads on yesterday and played them for the first time on my jazz gig last nite. I absolutely LOVE the way the J1's sound and feel. They have a wonderful, resonant, singing quality to them. I put them on the toms of my new custom-made Eames kit (replaced top and bottom heads) and the kit just opened up with a focused, articulate tonality. (I had been using Remo FibreSkyn 3's but did not like the feel nor the attack). I also really like the stick rebound from the J1's -- very natural. I will be replacing my snare batter head with a J1 next...I could tell from my toms that the etched texture will provide a very nice brush surface. Highly recommended!
Comments about Evans J1 Etched Drumhead:
I have these heads on my toms & snare, they're truly like an in-between of coated and clear G1s, very sensitive to my dynamics, sound great with the brushes, and they don't peel like coateds. Only downside is that they produce this ugly-looking permanent stain when pressure is applied on the head.
Comments about Evans J1 Etched Drumhead:
The best sounding head i've ever tried on my toms
Comments about Evans J1 Etched Drumhead:
Whether you're into jazz or not, these heads will suit your needs.
Comments about Evans J1 Etched Drumhead:
I tried this head out a few months ago, and it seemed to stretch a bit more than expected, but is works well on my aluminum acrolyte ludwid snare. Warm tone and somewhat soft attack, but it also cracks nicely on rimshots---records really well. It is much like the remo renaissance heads. Overall a very nice snare skin, very pleased with the sound and response. Remo is wrong that etching a skin is not a good thing, i outfit all my new snare drums with the etched skins, they have the soul of old calfskin, very nice. Definitely warms up the sound of metal and wood snares--try it out.
