Comments about Evans Onyx 2-Ply Drumhead:
I purchased these heads for my toms after listening to some samples of how these heads sound on the evans website. I was first made aware of these heads by reading other reviews praising the durability of these drumheads. I will concur that these heads are extremely durable. Though I didn't list any cons, I will say that a downside for some drummers might be that with the extra durability of these heads there is loss resonance and some tone. If you really enjoy the sustain on your toms these may not be the heads for you. I tend to tune my toms rather high (think Neil Peart's sound from the late 80's-mid 90's) so with these heads I found that my higher tuning practice increased attack and gave me a tone which quickly died after the initial hit. This worked well with my playing style (fusion style playing) so I found the sound pleasing to me.
What I found surprising is how well the heads record. I have a little home studio and upon playback of some recordings I have done, the toms still have a punchy sound to them. With the increased attack, the toms came through well in the mix and the quick little doubles I often like to employ can be clearly heard.
My personal conclusion would be that these heads work well in a medium to lower tuning range. If you're a drummer looking for durablitiy without giving up a whole lot of sound, try these heads out.

Very easy to tune. Made my vintage Ludwigs sound much better than single ply heads---good attack and low sustain, but still full sound. Good for rock or pop in small rooms.

Bought 10, 12 , and 14 inch heads for a Yamaha Stage Custom kit that has been through heck and back. Replaced my old Genera's with these heads and my toms sound like toms again. I was a bit skeptical at first because of the matte finish, but, was impressed once I put them on.
Pros

- Improves Sound
- No high pitch ring
- Strong
Cons
- Show dust and stick marks

Comments about Evans Onyx 2-Ply Drumhead:
I bought these for looks and sound, and couldn't be happier (unless they were free :)
I use them on my Yamaha Stage kit unfinished maple shells and it looks so classy.
I play in a folk-rock band and I like the fat, classic sound these have on the toms. Very pronounced lows on my bigger toms.
Gets rid of loose high freq ring that seems to occur too often when gigging and changing weather conditions.
I am betting they can take a beating too - no dents or big scratches as with less quality clear heads so far (few weeks of play time)
GET 'EM!
Comments about Evans Onyx 2-Ply Drumhead:
I bought a couple of these from a local music store based on an employee's advice. They cost a little more than what I used to buy, but I was hooked as soon as I put them on my toms. They have a nice deep, solid sound. The heads don't have an excessive ring to them (I just HATE that "ping"ing sound). With other heads, I would spend an hour trying to tune out that ring. These went right on and sounded perfect. Heavy hitters like myself will find that there's no other drumhead that's closer to indestructable. As an added bonus, they look awesome on my black drums. You will not find a better drumhead than these.
Comments about Evans Onyx 2-Ply Drumhead:
I used a 13" Evans Onyx on my snare drum for about 4 months; switching out about every two months. They are a great sounding snare head due to the dark tone but bright attack. I recently purchased a Remo Black Suede Emperor for my new Pearl Masters snare drum and it does not compare to the Onyx. The Remo head has NO coating, so it is a smooth black head. That instantly turned me off. Next, the Remo head feels thinner than the Evans version; it almost feels like a 1 ply head. It is also much more difficult to initially tune. I recommend this head over any other type of black heads on the market.
Comments about Evans Onyx 2-Ply Drumhead:
The title says it all these heads are amazing. I own a pearl set and I used these heads to replace the generic pearl heads. My drum set instantly sounded like Alex Van Halen or Tommy Lee's set. These heads are simple to tune and deliver that deep punch I was searching for. Buy these heads.
Comments about Evans Onyx 2-Ply Drumhead:
I've used Evans for years now. I bought the onyx purely for looks but I have always used at least two ply for my toms. Mainly for tuning reasons, its just easier. These heads were surprising. They tune perfectly and quickly and sound almost like a single ply head with all the attack and good warm low end. love em'
Comments about Evans Onyx 2-Ply Drumhead:
These heads are great.Normally, I'm all about single ply heads, but I needed something a little more durable for my gigging kit. They provide the durabilty, as well as a deep tone, and plenty of attack.Great for various rock styles.
Comments about Evans Onyx 2-Ply Drumhead:
i have been playing drums for ten years now, and i have tried every head possible. this one is by far the best. i have mine on a ddrum diatribe 12x9 birch tom, and i must say even paired with the stock ressonant head it sounds amazing. i play in a heavy punk almost metal band and it gives that deep dark tom sound and it will blow minds. buy this tom.
