Excellent design! Fast and easy to use. accepts every rod I have from vintage (small) to larger modern rods.

I do wish it had a replaceable nylon sleeve for the cymbal hole like a cymbal stand, but none of my other clutches do either.

I have used mine over a year, gigging several weekends a month with some higher sound level bands (Rock etc... but not Industrial Screamo or anything) and haven't had a single "quality issue" or failure with the product.

Warning: you'll want all of your cymbals to be this easy.($$$)

Also: you might want to experiment with the rod clamp tightness before gigging with it. Mine slipped a few times till I got it right for my foot pressure level.

I'm buying a 2nd and maybe a 3rd one for all my hi hat stands .... I'm spoiled now

I've grown to trust Gibraltar for its sturdiness. I really like the idea of this product. My bottom nut was constantly loosening and dropping off during performances. This seemed like the perfect solution... and for the past year, it has been. I work constantly and need dependable equipment. This past Saturday, this clutch failed. The top retaining bolt and wing nut were suddenly stripped and the top cymbal could not be set. Fortunately I carried my old clutch, so I did get through the show. Gibraltar needs to change the top wing nut from the two-piece bolt and nut, to a more simple wing nut system, where the nut applies pressure directly to the rod (like every other clutch in the world!) I would buy another, but I can't have equipment that I can not rely on. Poorly made for professional users.

Comments about Gibraltar Quick Release Hi-Hat Clutch:

A hi-hat clutch is something you don't think about until you have a problem with it. I have had several occasions where the clutch would rotate loose during a show, so this quick release mechanism solved that. It's easy to use and inexpensive, so it's worth checking out even if you don't necessarily have a problem with your current clutch.

Comments about Gibraltar Quick Release Hi-Hat Clutch:

Over the years I have been working to reduce my setup/takedown time. I bought a smaller kit that fits into a normal trunk and have been optimizing the hardware. Practices and shows add up to lots of time spent setting up and moving drums. I also had a couple near misses where I was trying hold a couple cymbals at once and unscrew a stand and a cymbal slipped out of my hand. I recently added quick-release fittings to all the cymbals including this hi-hat clutch. Makes the last step of putting all the cymbals up (or the first step of taking them all down) super quick.
I've only used this for a few weeks, but so far it's not only easy to get the cymbal on quickly but it is a better clutch than the one it replaced. Bonus, instant spare for a part that can easily get lost.

It may not seem like much, but anywhere I can save time setting up or tearing down is always helpful. If you are playing venues that have several bands and your time is limited, a few minutes here or there can make all the difference in the world.

Comments about Gibraltar Quick Release Hi-Hat Clutch:

Remo started the QR clutch revolution. Taye has one exactly like it. This is Gibraltar's variation, and it has some interesting differences. Instead of pushing against a spring and twisting into a locking channel, this QR mechanism has ball-bearings and works much like an air chuck. This allows you to make the top cymbal as "sloshy" as you want (the Remo and Taye require at least a little down pressure). Because the Remo-Taye product has spring tension, the top nut does not loosen by itself - once set, it stays until you move it. Although the Gibraltar has a locking nut, it can (like all locking nuts on HH clutches) work its way loose, but does not seem particularly prone to doing so.

What few people mention is how the clutch clamps to the rod. Instead of being a screw that bears into the rod (potentially marring it), it is a nut with a pass-through for the rod. Tightening the nut compresses the bearing surfaces against the clutch. This is similar in concept to the change that Ludwig made in the late 60s / early 70s. The BD mounted cymbal stand used to have a screw to keep it in the place, with the result that the L arms from that era are all marred. Ludwig changed this to a nut with a pass-through on the bolt, which holds the arm more securely and doesn't tend to mar it. What Ludwig did for BD mounted cymbal stands Gibraltar has done for HH clutches.

One thing to be aware of is that the clutch is made to fit the larger American sized HH rods (.275"). While it will accommodate the smaller diameter rods of the Japanese kits (.238" = 6mm), it is more prone to slipping when used with the smaller diameter rod. This is not a deal-breaker, it just requires the you tighten the nut with a little extra love to make sure it stays in place.

The ONLY down-side is that since it is a nut and not a screw, you can't use the standard screws that came with your HH stand. On the Remo or Taye, you can swap out the screw for your Ludwig or Yamaha, or whatever so that your hardware all matches. You can't with the Gibraltar for the reason stated above - it is a nut, not a screw. But if you are good with the look of the Gibraltar nut, this QR clutch offers some advantages over the Remo or Taye (although the Remo and Taye work fine, and if you have one of those, the Gibraltar's improvements are not enough to justify replace either of them, in my opinion).

Comments about Gibraltar Quick Release Hi-Hat Clutch:

Awesome product! This little thing saves me lots of time. As a gigging musician, I have to set up and tear down my kit 2-3 times per week. I am always looking for any little thing that can save me some time. I can set up my hats in about half the time now.

The quality of the clutch is good. It is solid, and has never slipped on me.

-1 star: The only issue I have with it is that the quick-release holder can be a little tough to put on. There are captured ball bearings that need to push in when you slide it onto the clutch. I find that sometimes I have to apply quite a bit of force to get it on. It's not a big deal, but I would give it 5 stars if it was a little easier to push on.

Comments about Gibraltar Quick Release Hi-Hat Clutch:

When setting up and taking down a drum kit I am often in a hurry in a poorly lit area.
I have cross threaded the cymbal nut on my clutch.
I have dropped the cymbal nut and had it roll under things on the stage.
I have had the cymbal nut loosen and fall off of the clutch while playing the hats.

Those issues are just memories now :)
I have both the standard, and the drop clutch versions of these hi-hat clutches and they work great.
