Comments about Gibraltar SC-BDHG Drum Hoop Guard:

This product comes standard on the bass drum hoops of current drums by Yamaha and other mfgs. I used it on a resto-mod '65 Ludwig kit I've been rebuilding.

A number of reviews and expressed disatisfaction with the product also indicate that the product had been used incorrectly, which is understandable because there are no instructions.

The package comes with two hoop guards. Only one can use be used per bass drum hoop. The guard goes on the inside of the rim at the 6:00 o'clock position facing upward. It is engaged by the top clamp of the bass drum pedal (many newer pedals are rubber lined at this area - in such a case you don't need this product. The product is great for use with older pedals, such as the Speedking). It does not, nor is it designed to protect the bottom, outside circumference of the hoop.

There have been complaints about the strength of the glue. This is not an issue on rims with the hoop guard commercially installed because the factories do not use flimsy adhesive, but contact cement. You can do the same. Get a small bottle of Weldwood contact cement from a home improvement store. Set the guard in place and trace it out with a pencil. Put contact cement on both the guard and the hoop and allow it to sit for 15-20 until it is dry to the touch. CAREFULLY line up the two parts and press together - you won't get a second chance. You will have a permanent bond (it can be removed with solvents, but the solvents that will break down the contact cement will also remove the finish from your hoop). This is a PERMANENT modification. The modern drum companies have the hoop guard permanently in place, and presumably if you want to protect your hoop from the pedal, you want to do that all the time.

Comments about Gibraltar SC-BDHG Drum Hoop Guard:

I have a very nice custom drumset and bought these day one of owning it to keep the hoops protected. They seemed sturdier than the reviews claimed. I took them out to my first show and when I returned home noticed that the top piece was missing as were the built in rubber guards on the clamp of my Pearl Demon Drive pedal. So not only was this a one time use item, but it also damaged my pedal. Trash

I have a couple of these laying around. They don't stick to the hoop well so you will lose it more than likely. better ways of protecting your bass hoops I'm sure.

Comments about Gibraltar SC-BDHG Drum Hoop Guard:

It's always best to protect your investment and protecting the rims on your bass drum is very important. This item provides a decent amount of protection from the pedal clam onto the rim. But, it could be bit thicker for more dense with the rubber. During first use some of the teeth on my pedal clamp went through the rubber. It only left minor scratches on my rim, but I wish it hadn't let any. Recommend, but believe it could be better.

    Save your Wood hoop!

    By Chris Swirski

    from Undisclosed

Comments about Gibraltar SC-BDHG Drum Hoop Guard:

This 2-pack came in handy...I used one on the bottom of my kick drum where my pedal connects and used the other on the top where I mount a cowbell. I wish I had thought to buy these earlier and wouldn't already have so many "chew" marks on my hoop. Definitely a smart buy if you don't want to mark your hoops up from pedal/mount clamps.

    Fell Apart Before Use

    By Twanger-xScZA

    from New Hampshire

Comments about Gibraltar SC-BDHG Drum Hoop Guard:

This product is complete junk. There is a sticky film on the rubber that is supposed to adhere to the rim... Which could be more damaging than the pedal. I was lucky however as the adhesive just fell off right out of the package so my rim was spared. Just glue a couple of pieces of felt to your pedal.

    Excellent Product

    By Mark L. Wills

Comments about Gibraltar SC-BDHG Drum Hoop Guard:

You've gotta save your hoops! I wish I had one of these beginning in 1967 'cause my Ludwig Club Date hoop would be mint instead of all the beaver chew marks from the Speed King pedal... Fit perfectly to any hoop and are working on my vintage kit and my new Yamaha kit.

    I would skip it

    By Yellowdogmichael

    from Memphis, TN

Comments about Gibraltar SC-BDHG Drum Hoop Guard:

Save your money, I already wasted mine. This does not work well with wood hoops. It may work for metal hoops or something. It is 2 pieces, and you can't use both. My pedal would not expand enough to get around the thickness of the rubber.
