Designed with Alex Acuña himself and constructed in his homeland, this is an authentically Peruvian cajon.

This Alex Acuña Signature Special Edition Cajon was beautifully handcrafted in Peru from Peruvian Mohena with artisan inlays. Alex's favorite flamenco model, this cajon has wires that provide the perfect amount of buzz and resonance—the cajon is excellent for traditional flamenco or for modern applications.

Cajon comes with a free carrying bag.

Born in Pativilca, Peru, Acuña played in local bands from the age of ten, and moved to Lima as a teenager. At the age of eighteen he joined the band of Perez Prado, and in 1967 he moved to Puerto Rico. In 1974 Acuña moved to Las Vegas, working with artists such as Elvis Presley and Diana Ross, and the following year he joined the jazz-fusion group Weather Report, appearing on the albums Black Market and Heavy Weather. Acuña left Weather Report in 1978, and became a session musician in California, recording and playing live with (amongst many others): Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell, Ella Fitzgerald, Jim Walker, Chick Corea, Whitney Houston, Plácido Domingo, Phil Keaggy, Sergeant Petter, Sam Phillips, former Weather Report bandmates Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Beck, Roberta Flack, U2, and Al Jarreau.

Comments about Gon Bops Alex Acuna Signature Special Edition Cajon:

To reiterate what others have said - the picture really does not do this justice - it's EXTREMELY attractive, with a gloss finish over the decorative woodwork.
It literally could double as an attractive piece of furniture for certain decor's.
The sound is deep, resonant and warm, and the Acuna cajon is very responsive, not requiring much of a strike to generate a nice, warm bass note through the port.
After messing around with it for about 10 minutes, I started to get a feel for the snare section to get a nice attack to it, but I noticed that this cajon does not have a snare adjustment, unlike others that I've seen.
It comes with a nice, dual-zipper protective carrying case, which is nice for avoiding transportation dings/scratches.
It seems to be very well-built, with dovetail joints and tight seams on the decorative sides.
It looks good, it SOUNDS good - recommended!

Comments about Gon Bops Alex Acuna Signature Special Edition Cajon:

I had been searching for a cajon for about two years. Every time I would go in to a music store, I'd seek them out.... sit down, bang on the thing, put it back. Sometimes, the "kick" sound wasn't there. Sometimes, the snare sound wasn't there. Sometimes, the kick sound WAS there, but the buzz of the snare sound simultaneously wasn't right. Then, I stopped in to a Guitar Center in Portland, Oregon. They had about 10 cajons. I went through the usual process. Move it away from the wall. Sit down. Hit it. Put it back. Repeat. Until I hit the Alex Acuna from Gon Bops. Struck the middle. Deep, resonant but not tubby. Then I smacked the upper right corner of the face and was in awe of the tight snare-like "crack". Grabbed some brushes to go along with it and wow. Jazz kit? Yep. Americana friendly? Yup. Trust me. This box is the stuff. I am currently using it in a live set up in a duo. I play guitar or keys and sing, and have this set up with a pedal like a kick drum. You can just see the crowd light up when I add a little percussion to a song, heads start bobbing, smiles on the faces. I mic it with an Audix kick mic- soundhole or face, doesn't matter. Cannot speak highly enough of the build quality, sound, and I haven't even MENTIONED the appearance. It is a pretty piece of furniture. There you go. If you want a cajon, just do it.

Comments about Gon Bops Alex Acuna Signature Special Edition Cajon:

I bought this based on reviews of others, without actually laying hands on one beforehand. I don't normally like to do that for percussion instruments, but the comments on this cajon are so positive, I thought "go for it!". And I'm glad I did - this is a marvelous cajon. Great sound for both bass and slap, and possibilities for other sounds as well. The finish is beautiful, even jaw-dropping. I do have a couple of very minor quibbles: there were no instructions on how to adjust, and the size is non-standard, so if you want to upgrade the case there aren't many (or any) choices. Still, I'm very happy with this cajon.

Comments about Gon Bops Alex Acuna Signature Special Edition Cajon:

First, I must say, pictures can not do justice to the beauty of this instrument. It is absolutely gorgeous. Also, it comes with a gig bag with shoulder strap and front zipper compartment.

We tend to be familiar with the Meinl or Pearl models for the cajon, if you are using it in place of a drumset. If you approach this cajon in the same way, you may be surprised or disappointed. High pitches in the upper corners and low pitches on the lower portion of the front plate. This cajon follows the same principals, but the color options are so far superior that the instrument feels completely different from the Meinls and Pearls.

Every spot on this front place is a sweet spot for some type of sound or feel, and there is a learning curve to find the best spots for your type of music. You can generate all of your highs and lows to replicate a drum kit sound all along with X-axis, never having to move along the Y-axis. This is deceptive, cognitively, but it opens up a treasure chest of new musical opportunities. As you explore the remaining space, you will find color options that we are not used to with the cheaper cajons. This is a musician's cajon.

Comments about Gon Bops Alex Acuna Signature Special Edition Cajon:

I have been playing cajon for nearly three years now. I learned to play on a relatively inexpensive, but nice model, owned by the church in which I am a member of the praise band and another cajon (the exact same model) I was borrowing from a friend (who does not play). Over the last 6-8 months, I have become somewhat in demand as a player, so I decided it was time to purchase a cajon of my own. I use the cajon in a variety of musical styles ranging from bluegrass & mountain music to classic rock and funk, and a variety of venues ranging from front porch jams to night clubs. As I researched which instrument to purchase, I was at first overwhelmed with the variety of choices. I finally decided on this model, due collectively to the positive reviews, the beauty of this piece, and the Alex Acuna endorsement. I LOVE IT! It sounds equally as great "unplugged" or mic'd. Depending on the setting, I use a kick drum mic placed at the rear port, and occasionally will use an SM58 up front to pick up my shakers and foot tambourine. This is, in fact, a beautiful instrument with a very wide range of tones. The in-laid wood is gorgeous, finished with a very high gloss clear coat which sparkles under stage lighting! It appears to be built to last for years with dove-tail joints along the edges and sturdy feet on the bottom. The carrying bag is also very nice and promises to keep my cajon looking like new for many gigs to come! Thank you, Musician's Friend, for offering such a great product and for consistently being "right on time" with your shipping!

Comments about Gon Bops Alex Acuna Signature Special Edition Cajon:

This is my first cajon, and I was really having issues in what type to purchase. I love Alex Acuna and have followed him through his career, and knew he would not put his name on anything that he wouldnt play himself! I am soo thrilled with this new instrument. Although nothing can replace the drum kit, this cajon is just as fun to play. I recommend anyone that is having issues in deciding what brand to go with, this is the one. The wood craftmanship alone is a work of art(free bad too), as one said earlier, it would make a great piece in the living room. It is super responsive with deep lows and cool highs. I even found some cool tones on the side to mix in. It does take some practice to find the sweet spot on the corners, but did'nt take long at all. One awesome piece of percussive equipment and a must for any drummer, heck use it as the throne and you have two drum kits! Quick delivery as well.

Comments about Gon Bops Alex Acuna Signature Special Edition Cajon:

Most gigs I play these days are with a cajon because I am usually playing with two guitarists (acoustic)at relatively small venues. We play a very wide variety of music (Marley, Petty, Beatles, U2, White Stripes, Stones, etc.) I won't say the brand of the cajon I've played for the 50+ gigs before this one, because I don't want to imply it was a bad one, it's just that this cajon is soooo much better than my old one and every other cajon I've tried out. It's gorgeous for one thing. Love seeing it sitting on stage under the lights before we go on. It's very responsive, the bass and snare tones are very distinctly different. The bass sound is huge and rich. Takes a little adjustment of muscle memory to get used to really having to stay in the top corners to get the max snare sound, but well worth it. The design allows for a multi-tom fill sound by using your foot to slide down the front. Could not be happier with this cajon. First time my bandmates heard it they were amazed at the difference in sound quality.

Let me say that this instrument has AMAZING sound and expression. Our percussionist can manipulate it to produce the greatest addition to a wide variety of circumstances. Wether it is a solo guitar, or a couple guitars and a keyboard, it really makes a difference.
