OVERVIEW

Compact mahogany shells with innovative expandable features.

This Gretsch Catalina 4-Piece Street Shell Pack is designed for the player who is looking for a quality, versatile 4-piece set designed for mobility. Featuring Mahogany shells with 30-degree bearing edges and a natural interior, this set projects a warm, punchy, classic tone.

What makes the Street Kit unique is the revolutionary “adjustable-depth” bass drum that expands an additional 2-1/2" in depth, from a 16 x 12” to a 16 x 14½”. When the bass drum is “opened up” the drum delivers a robust feel with a focused punch, impressive depth and controlled overtones. For a more traditional “jazzy” sound with familiar satisfying overtones and quicker resonance, simply close the depth of the drum using the three adjustment rods. The rods are notched for quick and precise adjustments, making the Street Kit the perfect solution for the player whose gigs vary from one style to another.

Although the Street Kit packs a punch, it was designed with portability in mind. Its compact sizes fit easily into two bags (sold separately). The bass drum is equipped with a built-in cymbal arm which eliminates the need for a cymbal stand. Even with a hardware bag and cymbal bag, with the Catalina Club Street Kit, you can actually make it out of the car and into the club in just one trip.

Cymbals and hardware sold separately.

Comments about Gretsch Drums Catalina Club 4-Piece Street Shell Pack:

I purchased this kit from Musicians Friend 2 weeks ago and couldn't be more pleased with the quality of this drum for the price. This is no toy. My kit actually came with Remo coated heads on top and clears on the bottom. After a little tuning I got the snare and the toms to sound very nice. The kick took me somewhat longer to tune and get to my liking. I mean, you can't expect to get the low end as you would in a larger drum. However, I found that keeping the drum closed, tuning both the front and back heads as low as possible (to your liking, of course) and using a felt beater gave my a decent low end.

I can't imagine what this kit would sound like, mic'd. Especially for a slightly larger music setting. Looking forward to that.

Trust me, as a 49 year old travelling drummer, playing since age 10. This kit will definitely be coming along with me on some smaller gigs. Not only do I need to save my back, I just enjoy the way they sound.

Comments about Gretsch Drums Catalina Club 4-Piece Street Shell Pack:

I put mics on this kit at a decent sized venue and no one could believe the sound. Even the little 16 inch kick was a cannon. The weakest part of the kit is the snare. Not up to par with the rest of the kit.

Comments about Gretsch Drums Catalina Club 4-Piece Street Shell Pack:

Just a quick follow up to a previous review I did of this kit in August 2014.

I've played several gigs with this kit since my first review, in fairly decent sized bars/clubs, and really put it through the paces. I can safely say that this little kit has excelled WAY beyond my expectations.

First off, everyone I've played this kit with loves it…from the way the drums sound, the way it looks (red sparkle) and its compact size. I get nothing but questions of interest and compliments.

I get a lot of compliments on the tom sound especially, which I 100% agree with. I was very apprehensive getting mahogany shells (being a big fan/user of maple), but these toms sound amazing. I've also found they are very easy to tune. The heads I'm using (Evans EC2S Frosted) have been great and lend to the sound/ease of tuning. With a little added Moon Gel, the tom sounds I'm getting are very nice/focused.

The kick I'm getting used to. It's obviously got a smaller sound than a large kick drum (I usually play a 20x20), but when mic'd up and opened up fully, wow, it sounds great/bigger than you'd think. The Evans Hydraulic tom head I have on it is holding strong, and have no complaints. I use a double kick pedal with this set, and it takes the beating like a champ.

I haven't used the snare, and probably won't. I already have my go-to snares, so will keep the snare as a last resort/back-up.

Overall, after playing several shows, this kit has been awesome and served my needs well. I'm very impressed that a kit this size, and at this price can sound so good, look so good, take a beating and be a blast to play. Don't overlook this kit. It's a great solid little set.

          Addtl note...

I also purchased the bag set that compliments this kit. It's basically just 2 similar open type bags with no dividers or sepators (to put between stacked drums). They serve their purpose, though I wish they came with some sort of dividing layer(s). A bit lightweight in the padding, but for my needs, they work as needed.

Comments about Gretsch Drums Catalina Club 4-Piece Street Shell Pack:

Nice sounding toms and snare right out of the box. The bass drum is a little flat sounding until you find the correct tension on the heads to open it up. I don't know if this is because of the split in the bass drum, but that is my guess. The Remo heads that come with it sound really good for stock heads.

Comments about Gretsch Drums Catalina Club 4-Piece Street Shell Pack:

I used to own a Gretch Catalina Club jazz kit, but never really took a liking too it. While it was nice, it felt unbalanced in my experince (rack tom was top heavy over the kick drum...made it quite tippy, etc). That drove me nuts. I saw this kit, and thought I'd take a chance to see if it was any better/fit my needs...

Overall, I'm quite pleased with my purchase. Fit and finish are pretty decent for the price. Has nice Remo heads, though I changed them out. Hardware seems good/solid, though one of the kick drum legs was a tad crooked (dosen't affect the drums stability). The kick lift is nice/solid as well.

I put on some new Evans heads (EC2S Frosted on toms, and Clear Hydraulic w/ Remo Falam impact pad on the kick) and it really helped the drums sing a bit more. The kick will take some getting used to sound wise, as it's obviously small/quite different coming from a Mapex Maple 20x20 kick, but it's pretty nice sounding for it's size.

I haven't messed with the snare, which is probably the weakest part of the kit. Hopefully new heads and snares might help a bit.

One thing to note...if you're going to replace the kick batter head, you will most likely need to look for a tom head. This is something they don't make obvious in descriptions anywhere. The kick is basically a 16" floor tom, and the collar on the head needs to be small to fit, like on snare/toms. The kick head that came with this is an actual kick drum head, but with a small collar surprisingly. You won't find kick heads with small collars like that readily (I don't think). As mentioned, I purchased an Evans Hydraulic tom head for the kick, and it works fine. I would think a Remo Pinstripe or Powerstroke would work equally as good.

I'm very happy so far with this kit. It's priced cheap, light, balanced, dosen't take up hardly any real estate, and sounds quite good. It would be great for small venues, tight stages, and lower volume gigs.

Great compact kit. Has decent tone out of box, but I immediately replaced batter heads with G2 heads and bass with powerstroke3 head. not my DW collectors kit, but will not be embarrassed to play small venues or coffee houses with. Hands down better sounding than my Yamaha Stage Custom jazz kit was.

Comments about Gretsch Drums Catalina Club 4-Piece Street Shell Pack:

I bought this kit last week mainly to use for smaller gigs and modern dance classes, and it does not disappoint. I could even mic it up and play it with my hard rock band if I chose to do so!

I didn't know what to expect from the bass drum, but I was pleasantly surprised! Fully closed, it provides a tone that is punchy, yet warm and low with enough bottom to fill the room. Opening the bass allows for a somewhat drier sound, but still plenty of volume. I recommend the Aquarian Super Kick II, which you can find in a 16" if you look around. The cymbal arm is a nice touch as well, further increasing the portability of the kit.

A lot of people have been complaining about the snare, and I'm not entirely sure why. Tune it up enough and it gives a noticeable crack, and the cross-stick sounds great. Right now, the toms have a very high, jazzy tuning which is not bad, it just doesn't quite work for what I do. I feel that some Remo Pinstripes on the toms would give them more warmth.

The kit seems very well-made, and assembly is rather easy. It fits easily in any space and is a cinch to load in the car. I wish the custom bags came with the kit, but I can make it work with the bags I have. Overall, I am very satisfied with this purchase and I know I will get a lot of use out of it.

Comments about Gretsch Drums Catalina Club 4-Piece Street Shell Pack:

The Gretsch Catalina Street setup is very nice! From opening the box to playing time was maybe an hour. The sound of the 16" bass was astounding to me, especially when I extended the shell to 14.5". I already have a Gretsch Catalina Club Mod with the 22" deep bass drum and love the set, but with 4 children needed something smaller in the house & the Catalina Street set was the solution.
Thank you Musician's Friend for very quick delivery, a great price & continually offering musicians the tools we need to survive!
