OVERVIEW

A mahogany-shelled kit built for mobility and versatility.

The Gretsch Catalina Club Classic is a four-piece drum set for the active player who needs great sound out of a kit that sets up and tears down quickly and easily. Featuring mahogany shells with 30-degree bearing edges and a natural interior, this set projects a warm, punchy, classic tone.

The 20 x 14" bass drum is easy to handle and has a full-bodied voice with plenty of punch. When combined with the 12-inch tom and 14-inch floor tom, the resulting combination is a drum set with outstanding tone-ready to tackle anything from jazz to fusion, to blues, to rock.

The drums are crowned with chrome 1.6mm triple-flanged hoops for firm rimshots and accents. They also come equipped with custom Gretsch Remo heads straight out of the box. As of 2014, this kit is now available with a satin walnut finish.

Cymbals and hardware not included.

Comments about Gretsch Drums Catalina Club Classic 4-Piece Shell Pack with 20" Bass Drum:

Incredibly large sound out of a small compact kit. Bought this to not feel bad about bringing my 60s downbeat set to venues. Did not disappoint. Mic'd up great, un Mic'd even better. Replaced the stock heads on the toms with ambassadors coated top and bottom. I switched the reso head to the batter side and used an emperor coated for reso. Bang. Golden combination to my ears. It's all preference of course. Lots of people have complained about the 5 lug tom being difficult to tune, I disagree . I found it to be quite easy to get it into its sweet spot. Also heard bad things about the suspension mount killing resonance. False. Unless you have a highly attuned ear for the most minute details of resonance, don't let this sway your decision. Got the walnut glaze finish and haven't stopped getting compliments.

Comments about Gretsch Drums Catalina Club Classic 4-Piece Shell Pack with 20" Bass Drum:

I really love the wood, tone, and finish of the shells - as well as the bearing edges and Gretsch hardware. You can see and hear where corners where cut, in the: tension rods, lug threading, hoops, and worst of all - the sanding on the inside of the shells. I Love that it looks like it was made in America, but sad to say that these parts of it reek of the actual made in China reality.

Comments about Gretsch Drums Catalina Club Classic 4-Piece Shell Pack with 20" Bass Drum:

Lately I've been playing with a jazz band with a set of Breakbeats, and while they work, the sound is too modern and too bright for that genre. I picked up a Catalina Club kit used. It was outfitted with Aquarian Modern Vintage thin heads (batter; Evans coated G1s on reso), a Remo coated Ambassador on the kick batter and Fiberskyn on the reso. The drums are amazing. Not sure if its the mahogany, the 30 degree edges, the heads or a combination, but the sounds is warm, dark, and very mellow. The drums are capable of volume, but if you want to play in quiet venues and don't want to take out a second mortgage consider this kit. The model I have is older. The newer ones here have the round badges, round "gas cap" bass drum mounted tom bracket, and a minimalist suspension mount for the tom that makes the drum itself more visible. Very cool little kit.

Comments about Gretsch Drums Catalina Club Classic 4-Piece Shell Pack with 20" Bass Drum:

These drums have an amazing tone, warm and mellow. I play Blues and could not ask for a better sound. But the are a few big issues. First the mounting hardware is surprisingly cheap and flimsy. I just got the kit and not sure it is going to hold up, so the verdict is still out on that. Second MF has this billed as made in Taiwan, it is NOT made in Taiwan, it's made in China. Big minus for me and I almost sent them back because of it. Third I was under the impression it was a natural wood finish. It's not, it's a wrap made to look like wood. Very disappointing! Maybe I should have looked into that a little closer, so that one is on me. Overall I am happy, I wanted a kit with a great tone, with a small footprint and that is exactly what this is.

Comments about Gretsch Drums Catalina Club Classic 4-Piece Shell Pack with 20" Bass Drum:

I've had this as my main kit for about two-three years now, and have only been showered with compliments by peers, bandmates and sound men ever since. Incredibly light and easy to transport, but still delivers punchy, beautiful sounds with the right heads and dampening. The bass drum sound is out of this world for the size, no matter hard or soft beater, I'm still blown away by how it sounds when I bring it to a new room.

The only con I found was the snare, it feels a little too thin for me. Mostly use it for brushwork and concert snare practice. But by all means, don't let that stop you from buying this kit!
(I swapped the snare out with a Gretsch Brooklyn Steel 12 x 6, and it was the PERFECT fit for me).
Other than that, just be careful with the shells while transporting, the finish on the shells doesn't seem too strong, I've had a couple of dents from rims clashing with the shells. My finish was called "White Chocolate", and I'm not sure if it's even sold anymore, this might be different with other finishes. Didn't effect the sound! If you buy cases, it shouldn't be a problem at all.

If it helps, I mostly do funk / rock gigs, and play some jazz and hip hop as well. I've had friends who've bought other brands in this price range wishing they had bought this kit. Don't miss out! Especially if you have a limited budget, this is definitely one of the best kits under 1k.
