Comments about Gretsch Drums Catalina Club Jazz 4-Piece Shell Pack:

if you calculate the acoustic resonance of a 14" long, 18" diameter cylinder, you get a core frequency of around 60-70 hertz! That's exactly that "thump in the chest" frequency! The larger kick drum size that EVERYONE uses has a resonance below 60 hertz, which means its resonance is useless, that's why you have to equalize the "thump" in.

Comments about Gretsch Drums Catalina Club Jazz 4-Piece Shell Pack:

This kit is a fantastic deal! It has wonderful tone and projection without being too loud for low-volume situations. The drums are very warm and punchy. I would suggest replacing the heads IMMEDIATELY, however, as the coating started to chip off within the first few minutes of my playing.
The rack tom is my only real issue with this kit. It is a little difficult to tune with only 5 lugs, but a little time spent on tweaking it makes it sound great. I also personally hate any tom mounts that hang the tom directly from the tension rods like this one does, as they makes head changes and tuning more of a chore. Over-all, however, this is a VERY solid instrument, and worth the money.

          Fantastic!

          By Philip Jackson

Comments about Gretsch Drums Catalina Club Jazz 4-Piece Shell Pack:

I've owned a Catalina Club for about 10 months now and I am continually amazed at what an excellent buy this kit was! I was looking for a 4-piece professional kit to play everything from Bop Jazz to Blues and Fusion but was yet compact enough to fit into smaller venues - the Catalina Club fit the bill perfectly.

The mahogany shells produce a warm, rounded vintage tone that is also modernized to deliver that unmistakeable Gretsch signature sound. The toms are very open sounding and reasonably easy to tune. The snare also sounds good to my ears but has a somewhat narrower tuning range than most - took me a fair while to find it's sweet spot but once there it sounds surprisingly higher-end. The bass drum is one of the best sounding drums on the whole kit with an out-of-the-box sound that is surprisingly full & powerful but is yet warm and resonant and perfect for jazz.

The downsides are few but one worth mentioning is the bass drum riser set up: once I attached my bass pedal, it put the bass drum beater slightly further back from the head than I'm used to, and with the longer beater path it made for a slightly awkward feel. I was able to add some additonal washers/nuts to effectively move the beater closer and it worked like a charm - not a deal breaker by any means, just something to be aware of.

All in all, I am amazed at how Gretsch is able to offer a kit with this quality, features, and performance for so little money! It sounds like a kit several times it's price and very well may be the perfect gigging kit. Highly recommended.

          Excellent Kit

Comments about Gretsch Drums Catalina Club Jazz 4-Piece Shell Pack:

I really like the kit and can't stop playing it. The 10 x 7 tom is a nice addition.

As far as the bass drum riser, here's a tip that worked really well (someone else posted this but couldn't find the name to give credit). The stock bass drum riser does lift the bass drum but also sets the foot pedal back a bit so now your beater hits the head at a downward angle, not just a little either. The fix is to put a or some washers in between the two riser plates when bolting them together, this will set the bottom plate further under the bass drum and let the foot pedal mount in a more normal location allowing the beater to hit the drum more flush. My tip, go to any skate shop, they have 8mm x 10mm bearing spacers, one of those spacers fits perfect over the hardware that comes with the riser and set's it back just perfect (you'll need two, one for each side). I originally tried an Axis beater head that was adjustable, it worked but I didn't like the beater, now using the one that came with my Pearl Eliminator pedal, it sounds better and I get more thump.

The stock heads sound nice, kinda vintage but hated the white marks all over my cymbals so I changed the heads to Remo coated pinstripes and ambassador, tuned medium I get a nice rock sound out of them which is what I play mostly.

My only two little gripes are the bass drum doesn't have huge bass, I know it's only 18" and I don't mic it but... I've tried loose, tight, two different beaters, change the head to a Powerstroke 3. It's much better than it was, use a little pillow too. Not a major thing but wish it had just a bit more. The snare drum just wasn't my thing, it's ok but rattled a ton, I even put new Puresounds on it, changed heads, some tape, etc. Before that I even took it apart and lightly sanded the bearing edge to make sure it was smooth, did a little paste wax, treated the inside wood, but all in all it's just not to my liking so... I added a Joey Jordison 13x7 snare and wow what a difference, very little rattle, great crack, huge improvement. Snare on eBay was $150 used.

Love the kit, it's a blast to play on, couple little tweaks to find your sound and all is good.
Gave it a 9 because there's not a ton of features but there's not suppose to be, it's simple kit, easy to haul around and does what it's meant to do. Comes with a bass drum riser (see overall for more info on that). I also added the 10 x 7 tom.
It's made overseas like a lot of drums are but it's pretty good. Finish is nice, stock heads are Evans G1. My only issues are the heads leave white on your sticks which transfers to your cymbals, it wasn't just a little either, that bothered me because the cymbals were new as well so I changed the heads immediately. Also one of my bass drum hoops was off so the head wouldn't seat right, MF sent me a Gibralter one for free to fix/make things right, it was black, matched good, so no worries.
Can't beat the price, used a 15% off coupon code at MF so it was like $550 for the kit!!

          A Great Set!

Comments about Gretsch Drums Catalina Club Jazz 4-Piece Shell Pack:

These drums sound absolutely amazing! If you know how to actually tune drums then there is no reason why you can't get these drums to sound like the best jazz drums in town.

I can make myself sound like Max Roach, Elvin, and Tony because the toms are so easy to tune!

I've had pros come ask me how my drums sound so good.

Oh and the hardware is good. I've had no problems with it and I gig regularly.

          These are great drums. Period.
