It may sound too good to be true, that you could recieve a drumset with so many positive features at such a low price,so let me throw in the only downside of my Gretsch Catalina Mod kit. It has a wrapped finish that looks very cool and very retro(which I really like) but the shells all have a slightly noticable seam. No one ever noticed the seam because you had to be practically handeling the drum itself to see it. There you go, a completely honest non-solicited review of a really Great drumkit by Gretsch!

For over 100 years, the Gretsch name has been the benchmark for Quality crafted musical instruments. The Catalina Club Mod is designed to continue that tradition in to the next
If you only own one kit,The Catalina Club Mod is the perfect choice. Regardless of the style of music you play ,or the venues you perform in, this kit will handle them all as they easily adjust to meet the demands of a hard Rocking Punk Band or a 10 piece Big Band or a smoking little Jazz trio
The bottom line is you want drums that give you that "signiture "sound .The one that is uniquely
you and seperates your style from all the others.
OK. Here is the personal endorsement, I have been playing professionaly for 45 years, yeah I'm an old guy and I have owned many different brands and styles of drums I never had a better sounding set of drums than my Gretsch Catalina Mod
The shell pack comes with Evans brand heads .I was able to tune these drums very quickly and get just the sound I wanted for the 9 piece Big Band group I perform with. .About a month later I had a job to do with a Jazz trio,Piano, bass, drums and I didn't feel like packing my Ludwig set that I normally use because it was behind some stuff in the garage I didn't feel like moving. The guys in the Jazz group were in awe of the terrific sound I had using the Gretsch Catalina Mod,and I didn't even tune the heads differently! That sold me right there on this kit!
When it comes to making a serious purchasing decision, many things must be considered. After all, no matter how much money you have to spend you want to spend it wisely. The Gretsch Catalina Mod shell pack like ALL Gretsch instrumenst , is built to last, with it's attractive stage presense and that great Gretsch sound it is a tremendous Value.
Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned professional this kit has all of the elements you want and need at a price that drumsets of much lesser quality are sold for.
When you consider the vesatility the Gretsch is able to provide you will agree with me that if you own one, it may be the only kit you will ever need! In spite of the unusual length of the kick drum, the kit is relatively light weight enough to make moving them from gig to gig less of a hassle than I thought they would be.

I was quite excited when I got these drums...at the time I knew nothing about drums and thought that I was getting a good deal and a great kit (I had heard good things about Gretsch, I'm a guitarist, a drummer by necessity only). But the hardware is jank, the toms and kick are O.K at best, and the lug setup doesn't make tuning easy. the snare is an ABORTION of a drum...awful...I'd recommend saving your money for something higher end.

I have just bought this drum set and it is amazing. I got them in the black and silver strip. The Kick drum like everybody sad it would be a (cannon). The snare has a nice crack to it and the rack tom sounds good to. After spending about an hour getting it together and all tuned up I set it up and started to play. It is a good small kit to play. Good buy for any intro level, intermediate, or even experienced players. Rock on Gretsch.
To be honest I was abit reluctant to purchase this kit, especial without checking it out in person...plus I was in the market to buy a maple set. However, I came across a deal online and I could not pass it up. I'm glad I didn't pass it up. I was blown away when I received this set. I have owned various sets in the past (Pearl Exports, Tama Granstar, Yamaha Hip Gig, to name a few). I truly beieve that this is the best I have ever owned. The Snare Drum suprised me the most, the toms are punchy yet mellow...and the bass drum, well it truly is a canon. Sometimes taking chances pays off...I would definitely recommend this set to anyone looking to purchase a decent (though it is more than decent in my eyes) set on a tight budget!!!
I recorded a demo on this kit and have used it multiple times at gigs. I'm a punk drummer (and a hard hitting one at that) and the kit stood up really well. The shells practically sing when you really hit em. I recommend this kit for punk drummers or anyone who prefers a smaller kit.
I just bought the Gretsch Catalina Club Mod in silver sparkle with black stripes a few days ago, and I cant believe what an awesome purchase this was. These are the exact sizes that I have always wanted, and it has a virgin kick drum (which is impossible to find in this price range), stock Evans heads, offset lugs, and black hardware. It looks like a $5000 custom OCDP or Spaun kit, just with mahogany shells instead of maple. Best sounding and looking kit in this price range. The only thing I swapped was the snare for my 7X13 Pork Pie, and I threw some EC2 coated heads on the toms. Amazing.
ive had this kit for about a year now, and i have to admit that i am extremely pleased with it. the drums take a little bit of tweaking but sound amazing when you get them right.. the longer bass drum sounds more like a cannon, and the snare cuts like a knife through butter. the only complaint i have is that the red/black set wasnt available when i bought mine!!
I feel like this kit was made for me. It sets up quickly, which is great for gigs. The 8x12 and 14x16 toms sound deeper and punchier than my larger Premier kit. And the 20x22 bass drum hits you in the gut. I changed the stock Evans heads to Remo Pinstripes on the toms, a Remo Weather King on the snare, and an Evans EMAD on the bass. No need for a pillow or dampening foam in the kick. Besides being well made, they look great. They have a retro look and are set up very much like my father's 1964 Gretsch Round Badge kit. Which, incidently, is in phenominal shape. This kit is worth every penny.
I spotted this set, as I was browsing through a new set to buy, because of being in a band, and playing a lot of shows, I needed a new, more reliable set. I haven't got to buy this set yet, but I know I am. I played a show on friday and one of the bands playing (from man in ghost) were using this set.. i was stunned over the quality, and what really got me was the bass drum, its so LOUD! and its hugee! your getting alot of bang for your buck here. These are a HIGHLY recommened set, for someone who is amature, or even quite experienced.
Wow this kit is a total amazement!i used this in a studio for recording, and it turned out to sound Amazing. And even without micing these drums they sound very professional, and very awesome. at first i was sceptic about the price and the quality of this set but after using it in the studio i just had to get it. this set is AMAZING if you are low on cash and need a good set to play live and for quality recording.SO GET IT TODAY!!!!!
I just bought this set new at my local drum shop. THESE DRUMS ROCK. They came with evans heads already. i got em home and tuned em up and DAMN!!! Talk about bass...the bass is a cannon. the toms are very warm. and i love the snare, VERY crisp. buy it asap!
I've been playing for over 12 years and my band has been gigging alot in the past year i usually play pearls but after recording with my brothers gretsch(it wasnt a club mod) my interested was peaked i decided on this kit as a practice kit so i wouldnt be moving my pearls so often. Got this kit and i was blown away i love the way it sounds and the bass is amazing its so deep and thunderous. The snare could be better but i just popped my JJ sig snare on this set and jammed away..forget using this as a practice kit i've been gigging with it when we travel since my pearl kit is so huge the gretsch is also easy to move around. The tuning is a pain at first but once you work the heads it gets easier...amazing kit i would recommend it to beginners and advanced players alike.
