Gretsch's tattoo design was developed to project a visual vibe as distinctive as the Gretsch Catalina Club Mod tonal vibe. To enhance the Tribal tattoo pattern aesthetic, the lug placement on this kit is positioned in a straight line, not in the typical Club Mod offset lug design. Each drum has a different sized tattoo that is proportionate to shell size, a subtle feature that adds to the overall boutique appearance.
This kit sets the stage for the modern player with tonal and visual distinction. Its mahogany shells pump out deep tones from the extra-deep 22" x 20" bass drum, 6.5" x 14" snare drum, and one up, one down tom set-up. The 20" depth of the bass drum gives extra low-end punch that can be felt as well as heard. The batter head of the bass drum is pre-muffled to control excessive overtones. Gretsch's GTS suspension system allows the rack tom to vibrate freely to maximize tone. Also, Evans G1 coated heads come standard with this Club Mod kit, so it sounds excellent right out of the box. The black hoops and lugs compliment this flashy drum finish. Characterized by its bold looks and thunderous sound, the Club Mod is a killer drum set for modern clubs.

This kit simply sounds amazing. I've been playing the drums for 15 yrs, and I almost feel like I don't deserve to play something this nice. I especially like the toms. You can tune them to make them anywhere from real low to higher sounds to fit your style, and they've got a nice resonance. Yes, it's just Phillipines mahogany with plastic wraps, but it somehow resonates as well as almost anything out there. And kudos to Gretsch for including Evans heads. The 20" deep bass is a bit difficult to get it right, but I've heard that it sounds great with EMADs, so I'll give that a try.As for the snare, I've heard people saying that it is not that great. It's true that it doesn't sound great stock. Too much bottom head ring, and it seemed impossible to reduce it to make it sound snary. I've played with it for some time, and it seems that the strainer is the problem. Or you could just dampen the bottom head a bit.Basically, this kit is an amazing deal, and if you know how to tune your drums, you can make it sound amazing. It looks great as well. My band mates think it's the best looking set out there.

I got this drum set a year ago and it's given me nothing but problems since day 1. The first thing to happen was that the lugs on the snare snapped off, and i dont like to tighten my snare that much. Then the wood inside the toms, bass drum, and snare started to crack and fall apart like it was made of cardboard or something. save your money and go buy a Mapex Pro M, they're so much better.

Seriously doubt NickJ has any experience. If the drums had defects or problems so soon, they'd be covered under the Gretsch warranty. Simple as that. Pay no attention to a fanboy who plugs another brand. Anyone who knows Gretsch knows the sound and quality, but also that the company stands behind its drums.
The snare is kind of generic, and with tweaking it could be a nice dry airy vintage sounding thwack, but the soul of this kit is the kick. At 20 inches deep, it makes for a spectrum of punch that you just can't get from a 16" standard depth kick drum. The laminate I'm hoping will stay on for the long haul.. kinda cheap aspect of the kit, the hardware is okay, I can't see it holding up to hard gigging, but for this price point I didn't expect heavy duty. I love the sound of this kit. Period. I can't wait to mike up and record this kit.
WOW!! I just bought this drumset about a week ago and haven't stop playing it sense. The bass drum is mind blowing! Sure, everything needs a quick tune job when you first open, but after that BAM, your in business. This HAS to be the best drumset for the price, and to be honest, sounds better then a lot of the higher end sets. I've done the research, and this one beats them all! You'd be crazy to pass this amazing set! Buy it now!
This Kit is Awesome! I'm mainly a guitar player, but I always have a kit at my house for friends to play, and I'll doodle whenever I have the chance. I've let five different drummers play o this kit so far, One is into a Jazz/Fusion, one plays mostly heavy progressive rock, another is a rock/blues guy and another plays funk reggae and everything in between. No matter what style of music they play, every last one of them has been impressed with this kit. EVERY drummer comments on the huge cannon of a kick drum and deep, punching tone of these drums. The quality of the build is very high. Sure, its not a $3000 DW kit, but for almost 1/10th of the price tag, you can't go wrong. This is a very versatile kit that begs to be played. Simply put, the kick sounds like a cherry bomb and the snare like a shotgun. Very loud and punchy! Like a kick to the gut!
Right out of the box I was in like Flynn on this kit. I've been playing drums for over 23 years & have waited to buy a Gretsch. Now this one comes along at a smokin' price & my dreams are fulfilled. The set comes with Evans heads & other than the bass drum head, they're good to go. I found the 22x20" bass to be hard to control tonal wise without the classic pillow inside, but an Evans EAD muffle ring head did the trick. Pillow gone & now you have low end resonance that will shake the neighbors' brains. The look & feel of this kit can't be beat & you get "That great Gretsch sound" for an outstanding price. You can't go wrong.
IT sounds so good. It is really good for playing shows. It is very louad and nobody has a problem hearing me play!!Get this now seriously its as good as a truth drum set. But for like 9x cheaper!!
I just bought this set and it sounds great as it comes. When I put on my favorite heads it was out of this world. I wanted to play just to hear myself making these cool sounds. It was just like when I first started drumming 35 years ago. What a feeling. The extra deep bass makes this kit kick out some great bottom. This is my new studio set and I can't wait to hear them on playback - Sweet!
Im a hardcore/ metalcore drummer, and this drumset pretty much kicks butt! The bass has a crazy loud sound and the toms have a wonderful sustaining ring that doesnt last too long. The stock heads suck, but I slapped on some evan g1's and they sound vundabah! I also put an aquarian super kick II on the kick. Great set, Great price, I'm never going back to another drum company... Go Gretsch! Woohoo.
I play out quite a bit and this kit actually came with Evans heads which was a good surprise. The bass is nice and fat, the toms are good too. I'm not wild about the snare sound but it works. Very good deal overall!
This kit is amazing for the price. I love the way the toms and the bass drum sound, the bass is huge! The only thing i dont like to much is the snare, its ok. Unless you buy dampeners the snare is gonna riiinng. all in all great kit.
Great sounding kit. Worth the money, well priced. Amazing sound and depth. The kick sounds unbelievable but needs a pillow to absorb echo (just like any kit). Highly recommend, you will love it and not be sorry. Awesome graphics as well.
This set is awesome. I got it a couple weeks ago and finally tuned it to my standards. The toms are great and I dont need to muffle them at all. The bass is deep. It sounds like a subwoofer when I tune it low enough. The snare took the most tuning but once I got it down it was incredible. The only thing is the batter head for the bass drum is dented a little so once I replace that with an aquarian superkick II it'll be the best set I've ever played.
Well, I got this set about a month ago, and I couldn't be happier with it. It has stood up to a fair amount of punishment; both from playing and transport, although the latter is made easier by the small compact size of this kit. I absolutely love the HUGE sound from the Bass drum. I compared it to my friend's 22"x18" bass drum, and the difference could be felt as well as heard. Both the Toms are pretty sweet. Down the line they will need better heads but that is how it is with every kit. The are loud and clear, and balance well with the snare and Bass drumThe snare is a nice size for most genres and when tuned right and tight it is great for Metal and Rock. All in all, a great kit. Easily the best deal on the net right now.
so the kit is great sounds awesome when tuned (and mark said it needed a pillow ... it doesnt) dont hesitate to buy
I had the opportunity to play this set and others before purchasing what I wanted. As soon as I got behind this set, I knew I wanted it. The bass drum is just amazing. I was really impressed with the heads that came stock as well. GREAT investment. I think I will stick with Gretsch from now on
I was really really sketchy. But if you know how to tune, (I noticed that a lot of people had problems with sound.) I had none of those. I mean tunings not that hard. the snare tight, the toms in the middle and the bass some what low but still tight gives you crazy attack from the bass.
this kit is awesome sleek looks, perfect sound and the simplicity of a 4 piece what more could you ask fo
I have a vintage premier kit, a newer ludwig kit, and a dw kit and believe it or not this is my favorite!!! It is great for gigs because it is a breeze to set up not to mention that they sound awesome. I was weary of buying a smaller kit but once I played the first couple of shows I stopped worrying!!!! The best part is the bass drum, it is thick and meaty and it really does the trick. I can go from playing Elton John to Led Zep no problem!!!! The drums are easy to hall, set up, and break down, and this is the most versitile kit I own.
I have the Catalina Club Jazz, which is basically the same as this one but with an 18" kick instead of twenty. My kit sounds far better than my friends Yamaha Stage Custom, and my other friends lower end DW and Tama kits. It's not as nice as a $2500.00 Pearl Master Series or high end Tama/DW...but it's pretty damn good.Toms are amazing...there's only two though, I added a 12 inch Pearl World Series rack tom. Kick sounds FABULOUS as well. Very "pulsey." Beater head is tuned fairly high, front head is loose.I replaced the snare with a home made black locust 7/13, my kit is now a dream to play.
I bought this set a couple of months ago, and I'm very happy with it. I use it for playing classic rock in bars. The bass and snare have enough punch, that I usually don't mic them. The hardware quality is on par for a set of this price, but the sound is great. I replaced the stock tom heads with pin stripes but that was it.
