I purchased this kit expecting less. I build drums and couldn't source the materials for the same kit configuration (even minus the snare) for close to this price. Being as large as the sizes are I think the mahogany shell is a good choice. It has just the right amount of dampening to round out the tone. I bought the black flake and expected a semi-cheesy wrap, but its actually an applied finish that looks quite good. An under coat of sparkle with larger glitter overlayed, very unique and somewhat retro. There are some draw backs but they aren't deal breakers. First off don't plan to use the snare. The hardware and overall build quality won't hold up under real playing, night after night (or day, if that's your gig of choice). It might make an interesting studio snare though, as the softer wood could be a new sound option to your maple or metal snares. Speaking of the hardware, replace the hoops! The ones the kit comes with are cheap and very light duty. Heavier hoops will hold their shape better and make tuning and staying in tune much better.Overall you can't beat this price for the shell sizes. If you're looking for a "BIG" kit with a monster kick drum you have found it, buy it before they are all gobbled up.

Bought the "other" size configuration brand new just opened it up and put it together (24x14, 13x9, 14x14, 16x16).
Looking at this stuff on line, and reading the reviews, it looked like a safe bet. I have 8 other kits, 3 Ludwig and 5 custom made. I was looking for something a little different to add to my collection as I like to mix things up from gig to gig.. I know about real Gretsch drums, and they are usually all they are cracked up to be. This Catalina Club stuff is garbage. It's close enough to a grand to have expectations of sorts. Not immense ones, but for instance, I bought a Ludwig Epic series kit, same sizes and configuration, about 6 years ago. (They have been discontinued). I still gig with those drums. They are of vastly better quality than Gretsch's "midrange" catalinas, and were cheaper. The Epics were nothing to be ashamed of at all. These Cats... I won't gig on them. I can get them to sound good, I can get anything I can put drum heads on to sound decent, but that's not the point. I wouldn't trust the bass spurs not to fail, or even the bass drum shell not to collapse from the weight of the rack tom and mount. The first thing I noticed out of the box was the wrap inlay on the bass hoops. It's not even laid in. It looks like a 6th grade shop class did it. Very raggity and shoddy. Like I said, the wrap itself is quite attractive, which was the main reason I bought these. Ocean Twilight It's called. But when I took two lugs off the bass to attach the rack tom mount (Ludwig Atlas, which fits and works perfectly) the wrap stuck to the lugs a little and lifted up! I then ran my fingers along the perimeter of the drum by the bearing edge and found that the wrap would come off with little or no effort. Unfortunately Ludwig Epics are no longer available new. If you are looking for a mid range drum kit for whatever use you have for them, stay away from these Catalinas. There are plenty of other choices out there. Too bad. Dissapointing.

Cover Drummer

Done some research on drums, looking for something brand new, but unique. This kit offer that! I like the setup of one up, two floor, also a fan of wood snares. Overall drums have a meaty and 'live' sound. Bass drum has a good punch. The floor tom legs are like tire irons! I haven't heard the Ludwig counterpart, but I think this set is an excellent value. I also like the fact if comes with Evans (G1) heads. At least you do not have to go out right away and purchase a decent head. I am very satisfied with Gretsch. Only setback was it did not come with any hardware, but I had plenty of stands. There lies the savings, and worth it.

Great Value, Great Sound

By Louis

from Philadelphia, PA

The Catalina Club Rock 5-piece is a true chameleon. It's responsiveness to dynamics is astounding, especially having such a monster sized kick drum. Every day, when I come to work, I make sure to put this kit through a rigorous demo, just to make sure that no nuances are missed. It kicks butt as a rock kit with projection and power, but it also has softer, more interesting timbres too. It sounds like a completely different species with a set of brushes, perfect for a jazz bossa-nova. It looks especially nice in the green wrap. Very Sharp. I hope that you enjoy playing this kit as much as I do sharing my experience with you.

Catalina Club Rock 5 Piece Kit

By Dave Rode

from Maryland

This is a great sounding drum kit. It has a retro look and sound. The hardware is heavy duty. Everywhere I go to gig, somebody always pays a compliment to this kit. It is a great price for a great set of drums. I got the black flake set about a year and a half ago and love them. BIG sound! Would definately purchase them again.

Won't Be Disappointed!!!

By ReconComm

I purchased this set in Black Flake 7 months ago. I honestly cannot find a bad thing to say about it. The hardware on the floor toms as well as the spurs on the bass are solid. Speaking of Bass Drum, it sounds like a thunder clap every time it is struck. This can be overpowering if not properly manipulated, but if you know your environment and how to mute them properly this will not even be an issue. I completed my set with a Zildjian A customs and I absolutley love the way it looks, and more importantly sounds. This set has convinced me that there is only one manufacturer of drums that I will purchase Gretsch!!! They really do have a Great Gretsch Sound.

Amazing!!

By drumby

All I have to say about this set is amazing! I absolutely love it. It has so much power, but yet can be light and delicate if you want (but why would you?!). It's impossible to get this set to sound bad. The only downside to this kit is cases are very expensive because they are soo big. Get one as soon as you can!

Huge sound. Low price.

By burrent

Honestly one of the best sounding drum kits I've owned. Nothing compares to having a 26" bass drum, it fills whatever size room it is in with a thunderous punch and overall warm tone. The only downside I would say would be the hoops are kind of light weight metal which makes keeping them in tune for a long duration difficult. Other than that the whole kit sounds great. You will not be disappointed.

Good, Could have been better

I walked into the shop and looked at this kit al almost fell over, it looks absolutely amazing, i played it and was actually rather disappointed, i have been looking at this kind of drumkit for a while and have played several, this was a surprisingly bad turn out for a gretsch kit, they are usually extremely high-quality. But this one, with all of its bonham style set up and sizes, lacked the meatiness of say a ludwig e.t.c. if you are looking for a bonham-like kit, i would just reccomend ludwig, you cant beat the original article, this is a very good, close-sounding copy, but still obviously a copy. A good all round drumkit though...well done gretsch again.
