Drawing its inspiration from a Motor City classic cruiser, the Gretsch Renown 57 5-Piece Shell Pack with Throne puts you behind the wheel of some serious drumming mojo. This gorgeous 5-piece configuration consists of a 22" x 18" kick, 10" x 8" and 12" x 9" toms, 16" x 16" floor tom, and 14" x 6-1/2" matching snare.

The "hood ornament" is the Renown Chevron, an aluminum triangular teardrop painted white with raised beveled chrome edges and embossed chrome Gretsch logo. Each drum has its own sized chevron, scaled to symmetrically fit that specific drum size. The eye-catching Motor City Blue is a traditional color derived from the 1950's car era.

To further distinguish this drum set design, Gretsch Drums partnered with Gibraltar Hardware to produce a matching throne that will be included free with this kit for a limited time.

Renown's contemporary features make this a modern classic. Renown 57 includes standard Renown maple specifications to produce punchy, full tones and rock solid performance. Toms are mounted from the bass drum on a Gretsch ball-socket double tom holder. In addition, the snare drum is equipped with 20 total lugs (10 lugs per side).

The combination of the Motor City Blue and distinctive chevron design elements join with Renown's industry respected performance to produce a drum set that has an unmatched classic, contemporary and bold visual appearance.

Unlike the 3 other reviewers before me, I actually own the Gretsch Renown 57 drumset. I'm not exactly sure how anyone can review something they have no personal experience with other than sales articles and photos but whatever. But as an owner of the Gretsch Renown 57 kit, I'm totally qualified to review it.I purchased the Gretsch Renown 57 drumset from Musicians Friend last week. The buying experience was pleasant as always and I received the kit about 5 days after I ordered it. It came in three boxes. Upon opening the boxes, I was amazed at how beautiful the kit actually is. At that point, my only hope was that it sounded as good as it looked. Last night was it's maiden voyage so to speak. I brought them to their very first gig. They sounded absolutely amazing. The kit was inspiring to play. The only modification I did, was put a pillow in the bass drum. I received nothing but compliments from the other band members. They indeed sounded as good as they look. I really like the overall sound/tone of the kit. I didn't use the matching snare drum though because I'm quite satisfied with my Ludwig Black Beauty snare drum. I really like the bass drum rack tom holder. Both toms can be adjusted independently from each other. That is a great design. Somebody at Gretsch/Gibralter was thinking when they thought of that. Now, for a couple of things about the kit that I don't like. The suspension mount on the toms are much too large in my opinion making it impossible to use the Audix D-Vice drum microphone clips to latch onto the hoops of the toms. The suspension mounting stick out too far around the toms. You can't position the Audix D-Vice drum microphone clips to latch onto the hoops of the toms. I had to purchase two Shure A56D Microphone drum mounts. Those can latch onto the suspension mounts themselves with no problem but that was not an expense I planned for.I also am quite confused as to what cases are going to fit these drums? I'm wanting to buy those next. When shopping for cases, looks like you had better add an extra 2 inches to size of the drums because of the tom suspension mounts. That is my biggest complaint with this kit and I just don't like that particular design.Overall, the Gretsch Renown 57 is a great kit and I really do love it. It looks amazing and we drummers need all the attention we can get right? :) Worth the $$!

Money can be better spent with a New Classic or a lower priced Renown
I have owned 27 kits in the past 6 years including a Gretsch USA Maple, A Gretsch New Classic and this Renown 57, all puchased new in the box. They look awesome and I plan to keep it. However, the tone is not as good as the Gretsch New Classic which is the best tone for dollar value in the Gretsch line. Paying twice the New Classic Price for a USA Maple is not worth the money unless you are a professional. For this kit, the tonal drop from a 12 inch tom to a 16 inch floor tom does not suit my ears personally. It is too large a range to gap. I would opt for a kit with a 14 inch floor tom or a 13 inch mounted tom with a 16 inch floor tom. I bought this kit and have also purchased a 14 inch Gretsch USA Maple Floor tom (not matching) to fit my ear preferences so I'm OK. If money is an issue, get the New Classic or drop down to a less pretty renown kit. It does have many of the high quality features that USA maple kits have. I'm a Gretch fan. This is not the top of the line however and your money would be better spent with a lower priced Renown with a 14 inch floor tom or go to the New Classic.

It's a very well built kit. Although I don't have the money to buy it now, but I was able to try one out. I really love the look! it's new and cool.
It comes with standard Gretsch Renown features..so nothing new, yet more than adequate
great sounding and comes with great hardware. As usual, Gretschs Renown hardware is always a cut above others.

Classes up the Joint for sure.

Comments about Gretsch Drums Renown 57 5-Piece Shell Pack with Throne:

This kit exceeded my expectations and has brought me great joy. It is playable art. Should have come with a 14" floor tom.
I saw a small picture of this kit in a mag back in March. I had wanted it based on that alone ever since. Every add I saw for it, everytime I got online and google it. It just called my name. I've been playing drums one year. I have had a vintage Ludwig kit, a Gretsch Catalina Maple and a Mapex Meridian. Recorded the Mapex sound best so that is what I kept. all I knew about it was that it was one of the best looking kits ever, it didn't even have a 14" floor tom. I'm the guitar player in my band, but I really enjoyed playing drums too so it's a hobby. I finally found the right deal and pulled the trigger. The first thing I did was compare recordings of the Mapex and Gretsch, well not true, the first thing was to just stare at it. It is gorgeous. The finish is great. If you look at the postings online, its the lighter of the blues you see. The quality of the hardware, hoops, the way it tunes, everything is so much better than any of my other kits. Ok, you do get a lot more for the money. Back to recording, it sounds great, clear and even. Didn't blow the Mapex away, but it definately was livleier, with a better overall sound. I have experimented with heads, Evans single ply coated, Remo 2 ply coated, Evans SST Clears. All sound very good. The snare just cracks with the stock Evans G1. I tried a couple different heads there too, but went back to the G1. The bass drum gave me the most concern. I really wasn't getting enough boom out of it at least at the back of the kit. Out front sounded better. I have it set pretty good now, the Emad with small ring, and an Evans pillow just touching the head with a corner, but plan to try out some other heads. One thing tere is I couldn't bring myselt to cut a hole in the stock reso head for a kick port. Looks too good. Seriously weeks later, I still just stand and stare. I contacted Gretsch about a 14" floor, and it sounds like it will be a reality some time in the future. So that's good news. I would buy this kit again.
This kit is really just well built.

Renown 57 --- WOW!

By Drummin' for Fun

from Tarboro, NC

Comments about Gretsch Drums Renown 57 5-Piece Shell Pack with Throne:

Feels like I'm driving a '57 Chev'! I bought my Renown 57 kit three months ago and am very impressed with the quality and sound. The workmanship, design, color, etc, of this kit are outstanding. I played a Pearl Export kit for years, which was very good, however, the Renown 57's quality and sound is head/shoulders above. The only negative is that Gretsch won't offer add-on toms (I've talked to them and all they'll offer in the future is a 14" floor tom). Perhaps if enough of us express interest, they'll reconsider. As always, shopping at Musician's Friend was easy, and I even received a sizeable discount as they matched the price of a competing vendor. Good job Musician's Friend, and hats off to Gretsch for dreamin' up the Renown 57!

My T-Bird

Comments about Gretsch Drums Renown 57 5-Piece Shell Pack with Throne:

I think these are the greatest! Gretsch has put ton's of thought into the details to not only make these look appealing, but look close at the chrome on the wraps...it's beveled AND pointed at the ends. Gave 4.5 to "Value" to protest all high prices, but you really get a lot here! These are Renown and have the silver coating inside, plus die cast hoops and don't forget the throne! Thanks for creating some excitement!
