I have been on the drumming seen for 8 years now, and being in a band I really wanted to get a kit that would have a great live sound and would last for years of play. I did allot of research and was first looking at the Gretsch catalina maple kit (for the money it's a good sounding kit) but when I heard the Renown Series I new that was the kit. I got the Autumn burst (I sit in my room and stare at it, it looks so nice). The 7x8 tom absolutely sings, this thing sounds incredible for such a small size, the 8x10 has a full/high/open sound with a great attack and the perfect amount of warmth and the 9x12 has a rich warm sound that makes it sound bigger than it is. The 14x14 has an awesome boom, and the bass is sick sounding, with a thunderous thud unlike any other I've heard. The maple sound and quality is immaculate with such a warm sound and depth, I will never be able to go back. All the hardware is rock solid with memory locks, and the heads are 2-ply top-of-the-line Evans. I'm planning on buying the 16x16 floor tom, to anchor the low end even more. But seriously if you have the money, freakin buy this kit!!!!

I bought a set of Gretsch Renown Maple with the extra tom instead of getting the snare and I couldn't be more displeased with ANY drumset!! The bass drum has a huge dip in the middle of the shell making the finish look like crap!! That's the good part!! For the money I could have bought a real kit!! The silver sealer they use, I'm pretty sure has something to do with the it sounding more like birch than it does maple. The drums have THE WORST SOUND I've ever heard in my 25 years of drumming. To put it another way, I could have purchased a cheap set and it would have sounded better than these drums do! I spent more trying to get any combination of heads that would make this set sound good ..... no difference. If this is the great Gretsch sound they are talking about, then there must be some tone deaf people out there 'cause they are untunable and sound horrible! STAY AWAY FROM GRETSCH!! This set is lilterally going in the fire pit .... for real!! It probably won't burn good either!! Oh and Gretsch customer support is as bad as their kits!!

gretsch rocks!

By gofloridagators

I got my Gretsch kit about a year ago, and I have had no problems with it whatsoever. The only thing is the heads that come with it are kind of cheap, but overall, this kit rocks! I love how the bass drum has that thundering boom. it can add so much to a song. These drums are also very easy to tune. I would recommend this kit to everyone!

Don't live up to the old Gretsch Drums

I've used Gretsch Drums going back to the early 60's. I would rate their drums these days, kind of so-so. The heads are terrible and tuneing don't hold. I guess it all depends on what your looking for and the sound you want. They don't live up to their billing. Of course that's my opinion. I've been around to many years and mayde my expectations are higher than the younger drummers of today. I know sound, and this set just don't have it! Sorry Gretsch, to me you have lost something along the way.

These drums are awesome!

I own the modern size kit in slate silver sparkle. These drums are great. I compared the bass in the store with all other high-end kits and this was by far the boomiest, most focused tone and best volume. Its a nice full and boomy bass drum sound that doesn't sound like cardboard. Toms have a nice focused tone and excellent volume. Snare sounds great. Some of this is of course head selection (the Evans G2's sound wonderful)but the maple shells, die cast hoops and 30 degree bearing edges (as opposed to 45)make a big difference. The hardware is very solid, no noise or rattling, and the die cast rims look and sound terrific. Best of all these drums are far less expensive than other high-end kits, but sound a lot better in my opinion. Also, the main difference between these and the very top of the line USA Customs is that the hardware is manufactured in China. It's excellent hardware however, and in my opinion there would be no reason to pay more for basically the same thing.

Great good god!

By gretschbasher

I have been drumming professionally for about 8 years, and about 11 years total. I started out using pearl kits, and wanted something different. I shopped around and played countless kits including DW, top end Ludwigs, top end sonors, none had the unique timbre of the gretsch maple renown drums. The toms support any tuning for any style with little to no weird overtones to deal with. The kick speaks and has a great punch when tuned mid to low. The gretsch snare drums rival every piece in the Ludwig line. BUY THIS KIT! Whether you're a live or studio drummer, or both like me. You will not be dissapointed.

I have had this kit for close to two years now and I love it! I have the 8" and 16" additional toms, so it's a 7- piece and I love it. Great for live and in a studio, I've used for both. I will have this kit for years to come!

Oh My Lanta...

I have owned a set of the autum burst renowns for about 6 months. I was and am absolutly pleased. I have been an ACTIVE drummer for a solid 10 years. I have always used other people's drums because i am poor and way too picky to play a lower end set. I have a ear for quality. After a lot of research, i found this beauty. It was everything that i was looking for. I compared it to DW's, Trick, Mapex, and Tama (the higher-end models). The renowns easily kept up with if not beat out all of these models. The gretsch renowns are CHEAP compared to these other brands. I have played many gigs with this set, i love every second playing them. Sometimes i have other people play my Renowns so that i can sit and listen to them through a PA system. I am very pleased. Please dont let Mr. Negative (a couple comments below) influence your thoughts about this set. He obviously got a defective set or just decided to bash Gretsch for some reason...?If you are a serious player, get the Renowns.

Get your jazz on

By testfoecho

from springfield,pa

When I first sat down and played this set I was hooked. It had the warmest tone I had ever played and that was from 5 drumsets I have owned. Just a great sound especially for jazz but the other styles I play sound just as good. I plan on keeping this set for a very long time.

I purchased a 5 piece Gretsch Renown Fusion kit in blueburst and it is stunning! First off, the color is gorgeous. I take pictures of it, and the finish just lights up like a blacklight poster! It reveals the natural texture in the wood too. Second off, the sound. This set I've compared to DW, and i think this is better - especially the price! The shells are made of pure, warm-sounding maple with 30 degree bearing edges for a warm, focused, and somewhat low-pitched tone with long sustain. Each set comes with EVANS clear G2 tom heads, a G1 coated snare head, and an EMAD bass drum head, and believe me, no matter how cheap you think these heads may be, you're thoughts will change once you've heard them on this set! Third off, the features. All lugs have plastic insulators to prevent thier contact with the finish, the snare has plastic washer insulators in between the torson rods to prevent metal-to-metal contact, the die-cast bass drum hoop clamps have rubber insulators, the floor tom has extra thick, memory-locked legs with non-slip shock-absorbing feet, and its made by one of the best companies out there!

Great Buy

For the money, this kit sounds as good as other brands (DW) costing twice as much. Out of the box, the bass drum sounds great. The toms sound thin with a lot of ring, but that is mainly due to the Evans G2 heads. Strap on some Remo Pinstripes and you will coax the warmth out of these. The 14 floor tom won't tune as low as I like, but still a great kit.The finish is absolutely beautiful.I've also been using this with mesh heads as a digital kit with a Roland TD-8. Works great as well. I have it all setup on a Gibralter curved front rack.
