Comments about Grover Pro 14" Performance Snare Systems:
I'm not sure exactly why the other reviewer only rated this item 1 star because of bad snare strings. Many sets of snare wires from cheap to very expensive sets come with strings/straps that I don't find ideal for the job. Most gigging drummers take extra straps/strings to shows. I wouldn't really take a product unused to a gig like that. One I don't know about reliability and two I wouldn't know if I liked the sound. I like the Cannopus straps best and I use them with all my snares.
Anyway back to the review I've used Grover snare wires for years. It's perfect for dialing in your snare exactly how you like it. I'm not endorsed by Grover and use a variety of snare wires from Puresound, Fat Cat, Grover, Black Swamp, Pearl, Tama, real gut, among other obscure/esoteric options.
Grover has three weights available depending on your projetion needs light (jazz), medium (club), and heavy (stadium). They also are available in either dark (bronze) or bright (steel), they also come in a hybrid set containing steel and bronze (orchestral). Because of their design they require less strands which offers great sonic advantages as it dampens the drum less.
These snare wires sound great you will notice heightened sensitivity, more articulation, etc from your drum. Obviously depending on the weight and material you choose it will change the character of your drum from darker to brighter or louder to softer. This is perfect for the discriminating drummer whether your use is orchestral snare or you are using your snare drum on a kit. If you are a musical player you will appreciate the dynamic range these offer.
One word of caution if you are used to using regular coiled snare wires these aren't as durable so be careful overtightening these as you can snap the wires. I'd also suggest that you turn your strainer to the off position when not in use. I'm not going to rank the product less because of this durability issue because it's inherent in it's design and users should be educated on proper use of their gear. Overtightening regular coiled snares can also be damaging I don't rate low because of misuse.
I'd suggest these to any drummer looking to improve their drum without breaking the bank.
Comments about Grover Pro 14" Performance Snare Systems:
The string provided to attach the snare was "slippery", so it was difficult to make a secure knot. (I'm a surgeon, so I know how to tie a knot.) The knot kept slipping during my first time playing out with the new snare, and I had to keep tightening the snare between songs. Obviously, people were standing around waiting for the music every time this happened, so I was rushing to get it tightened. Finally, I over-tightened it, and when I engaged the snare lever, the string snapped. Not cool.
