OVERVIEW

Based upon century-old African traditions.

The LP Udu Drum Mbwata produces rich and extreme textures between its two chambers. The lower rounded chamber produces mellow, round, dry bass tones, while the smaller, flat chamber creates bright, sharp, wet tones. Sounds created from the upper chamber are similar to the sounds of the Indian tabla or Middle Eastern doumbek.

The Udu Mbwata's clay construction is based upon century-old African traditions. It is played with the palm of the hand and fingertips. The textured surfaces provide additional tonal variations when rubbed. The sound possibilities can be further expanded by using the unique microphone ports found in each chamber. Small mics can be mounted for amplification to capture the internal sounds. The Udu Drum Mbwata is generally played in a seated position with the drum on the player's lap. It can also be played on a tabletop or floor using the included straw ring stands.

Comments about LP Udu Drum Mbwata:

The first one ordered came broken to bits, these are not well packaged for shipping. Musician's Friend promptly sent a return label and a replacement drum. The replacement arrived safely, however once taken from the box and handled a few minutes the surface paint began to come off. I wear no jewelry that could scratch the paint. I thought this would have a glazed finish but these drums are made of terracotta and are simply painted with a thin coat of cheap paint. Easily rubbed off while playing, not the quality I expected from LP and a real disappointment. I returned this item as well.

Comments about LP Udu Drum Mbwata:

this is a really great udu drum. inexpensive with a nice deep bass, varied surfaces for rubbed sounds and a separate chamber for higher tones. it is fun to play. there are not many venues to play this instrument with others but playing it alone is very satisfying. it is also a unique drum to keep out to start a conversation about udu drums in general

Comments about LP Udu Drum Mbwata:

Instrument is great, I like the you can attach mics. The only down side is the shipping of the instrument. First one arrived broken. needs to be packed differently. 2nd time ask Musicians Friend to label it "Fragile", which they did and put an additional box around it.

Comments about LP Udu Drum Mbwata:

I searched all of the drum sites. Most will price match to the lowest competitor. However, not all have free shipping for orders over twenty-five (for now). When the numbers are pretty much the same, shipping (believe it or not) was the reason I went with Musician's Friend, AND keep coming back to purchase more. There's more I could say about how fantastic this Udu drum is. If you play hand drums, or have always wanted to beat an inanimate object, a desk, or your own head with your mouth open, you need an Udu! The LP Mbwata is an excellent choice.

Awesome drum. I've had mine for years. Never had a problem with it. It's a blast to play.
