Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:
Have wanted one of these since 1986. This one is the galaxy sparkle finish instead of the flat gray finish. The sound is classic and it is as sensitive as my Ludwig super-sensitive aluminum snare. I even like the Ludwig med. and extra thin heads that come standard with this drum. The muffler works great and I'm very pleased with this purchase.
Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:
The Ludwig Acrolite Aluminum Snare Drum is the most essential snare drum on the market. I didn't pay the price that this gorgeous drum usually fetches when new, but I gladly would have. The Acrolite can handle anything you want it to do.
These drums were and still are the standard for academic percussion programs and as a result, they are very plentiful on the used market and prices are very low.
Right now I'm using an Evans G1 on the batter side and a Hazy 300 on the reso with Puresound Blaster 20 strand wires.
I did a little bit of recording with this beauty and it sounded fantastic. In short, every drummer needs this drum.
Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:
Got this drum from a yard sale for 5 dollars in a drum bag, brought it home cleaned it up and put fresh heads on it. sounds amazing and is loud enough to break through the music my band plays. over all amazing snare drum.
Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:
An Acrolite is must have for all drummers--the aluminum shell can sound any way you want it to, and it can do it well. The black-powder finish is very striking as well. My only complaint is the throw-off, but Ludwig uses the weak P-85 on even some it's top shelf drums. This poor feature is the only reason I didn't give this a perfect 5--everything else about the mighty Acro is tops!
Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:
I absolutely love this snare. I got mine secondhand from a friend, and at first I wasn't too impressed. The strainer was old, the throw-off stiff, and I just couldn't get a good sound out of the old Ambassador on it. But I swapped the strainer for a 42-strand, and cranked down an Evans EC Snare. And now it just sings at the slightest touch. Aluminum is a beautiful metal; it rings, but with more control than steel. definitely a must-have for drummers of any level.
Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:
My parents bought this snare drum through the school. I've had it for a while now and it's held up great. It sounds really good and the sound can be altered fairly easy if you know what your doing. I didn't buy it myself so I don't know whether the price is good or not but I know the sound is.
Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:
So it's not the most glam snare made but there is no other snare I would rather own. It takes some time to get the tuning right and a Remo Ambassador Hazy snare-side head to really bring this snare to life but in the end it's amazing. First off you can dial all the ring out with the dampner if that's what you want but why buy a metal snare if you don't want a little ring? With the dampner you can get just the right amount of ring without choking the snare. I thought this acrolite sounds so good the Supra-Phonic (same shell chrome plated) has got to be better. Wrong, I bought the Supra-Phonic and found it was brighter and didn't have the soul or magic tone the Black Galaxy has. I think the seamless aluminum shell is what seperates the best from the rest and only Ludwig has this, others are seamed-welded or cast boat anchors. Buy this snare and keep it as your rock solid while you chase the after the holy grail of snares, that's the fun in life.
Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:
I have the Ludwig aluminum acrolite with the aluminum finish 70's model and its one of my favorite when using a microphone it fills the whole room you're playing in and it does make a difference what heads to use "Evans" and the mic "Shure" and mixer "Peavey" and triggers. NICE/////|thats one of my vintage Ludwig collections ^V^ ^V^ :>}
Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:
This snare is pretty nice, but in order to get a good sound from it, I had to hit it pretty hard. I was using it when my slingerland snare's snare wires were broken, and it was a good enough replacement. But there's not a lot of tone behind it, just a pop then nothing. So it's good for punk or metal, not much else.
Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:
I bought this snare as my first drum ever and have now used it for 3 years. It has stayed in amazing shape and has a great crack or rain sound when played. I play many styles and luckily this snare sounds great in everything from jazz music to death metal.
