Lovely and priced right!

Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:

An Acrolite is must have for all drummers--the aluminum shell can sound any way you want it to, and it can do it well. The black-powder finish is very striking as well. My only complaint is the throw-off, but Ludwig uses the weak P-85 on even some it's top shelf drums. This poor feature is the only reason I didn't give this a perfect 5--everything else about the mighty Acro is tops!

Must Have Snare

Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:

So it's not the most glam snare made but there is no other snare I would rather own. It takes some time to get the tuning right and a Remo Ambassador Hazy snare-side head to really bring this snare to life but in the end it's amazing. First off you can dial all the ring out with the dampner if that's what you want but why buy a metal snare if you don't want a little ring? With the dampner you can get just the right amount of ring without choking the snare. I thought this acrolite sounds so good the Supra-Phonic (same shell chrome plated) has got to be better. Wrong, I bought the Supra-Phonic and found it was brighter and didn't have the soul or magic tone the Black Galaxy has. I think the seamless aluminum shell is what seperates the best from the rest and only Ludwig has this, others are seamed-welded or cast boat anchors. Buy this snare and keep it as your rock solid while you chase the after the holy grail of snares, that's the fun in life.

Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:

I bought this snare as my first drum ever and have now used it for 3 years. It has stayed in amazing shape and has a great crack or rain sound when played. I play many styles and luckily this snare sounds great in everything from jazz music to death metal.

Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:

Have wanted one of these since 1986. This one is the galaxy sparkle finish instead of the flat gray finish. The sound is classic and it is as sensitive as my Ludwig super-sensitive aluminum snare. I even like the Ludwig med. and extra thin heads that come standard with this drum. The muffler works great and I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Dude, I've been playing for almost 5 years, & this is the best snare That I've ever experienced!!!! Mine came w/ a practice pad, & all I had to do to make it sound like it could pierce your brain was put it under the snare. I got it used when I sarted playing, & it still sounds new. The one & only downside is that it's nearly imposible to find a set w/ the same paint job(even though that's also bad-a**!!) buy it NOW!!

      A Great, Often Overlooked Snare

      By Cruehead

      from East Springfield, PA

Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:

I first received this snare when I was in fifth grade, and it's lasted for a really long time. Nowadays, with snare drums such as Mapex Black Panther and others, the Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum is usually overlooked in stores. I strongly recommend purchasing this snare if you're a beginner or at the intermediate level. It beats the rest when it comes to quality.

      Excellent snare for the Money

Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:

I have owned this snare for about 3 years.(bought originally because I got a great deal on a used one, and just pure curiosity) I have a vintage 70's 5x14 and a 6.5x14 supraphonic as my main snares(which I paid dearly for!!) This snare is very underrated as it has the same aluminum shell as the 70's supra's. The only differences is the Black Galaxy ceramic powder coating instead of the chrome -- which by the way doesnt stick to aluminum very well and is the reason almost ALL chrome 70's supras are pitted and flaking!! The second difference is the 8 lug tuning instead of the supra's 10 lug. I really cant tell the difference in my 5x14 supra and this one when tuned similarly except maybe a slight edge on brightness to the supra. The great Elvin Jones once said no to be so hung up on 10 lug snares as 8 luggers breathe a little better and if its a quality product the sound should be fine. I wouldnt hesitate using this on stage and I can tell you for a fact that on the few recordings I have done, (I used this on 3 tracks out of 14) it sounded just as good as my supra's. And considering how close they sound to supra's and how far away in price they are, I fully endorse this product, not only as a step up from beginners snares but for semi-pro stage use and recording. If you are "on the fence" and cant decide, Take my word for it and get one. I wont sell you mine though!!!!!!

Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:

First of all, I was ripped off paying this much for this drum (not worth the price of a decent set though). This is a very nice snare drum but personally I would go with a black panther snare drum for about the same price but with the warmth of a wood shell. My complaints are that the snare mechanism is hard to tighten but it doesnt come loose like some do so thats good. My biggest complaint is that the muffler is held together w/ wax and therefore came apart after only a half year of daily use. But I have tightened the head and it has the best pop ever. It has like zero ring and I don't even have a muffler in it! I removed my muffler because it wouldnt stay on. I performed cranioectomy (removal of head) to fix my muffler but gave up fixing it after it simply wouldnt stay on. overall, great drum!

      not too shabby

      By Noah-J6bb0

      from erie, pa

Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:

This snare is pretty nice, but in order to get a good sound from it, I had to hit it pretty hard. I was using it when my slingerland snare's snare wires were broken, and it was a good enough replacement. But there's not a lot of tone behind it, just a pop then nothing. So it's good for punk or metal, not much else.

      Stands the Test of Time

      By John B.

Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:

I have owned this drum since the 5th grade, because my school required me to own one to be a percussionist. I'm now a senior in high school and this is still the main snare on my set and, with some dampening and some tightening of the snare, my main snare for concert performances. Sounds amazing with new heads, even after 8 years.

      Ludwig Acrolite

Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:

I absolutely love this snare. I got mine secondhand from a friend, and at first I wasn't too impressed. The strainer was old, the throw-off stiff, and I just couldn't get a good sound out of the old Ambassador on it. But I swapped the strainer for a 42-strand, and cranked down an Evans EC Snare. And now it just sings at the slightest touch. Aluminum is a beautiful metal; it rings, but with more control than steel. definitely a must-have for drummers of any level.

Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:

I got this snare drum 13 years ago, when I was first learning how to play drums. After neglecting it for a while i decided to fix it up when my pearl export snare's throw broke (another neglected snare) After putting Puresound snares, a remo powerstroke batter and a remo diplomat on the snare sidem this thing sounds amazing. It is now the main sare on my kit, a cheap alternative to the supraphonic snares. I have the 5" depth but i want to get the 6.5" one next with the 10 lugs.

This was given to me when I first started drumming seven years ago, and every time I play it someone comments on how wonderful it sounds. I still have the original heads and this is by far the best snare around. Incredibly dependable and durable, and its a looker. This is the one. And I'm even recommending it to my church

Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:

I've had this snare drum for about five years now and it's still sounding awsome althogh I have had to replace the head, snares, and the throwoff. My favorite part of this snare is the crack you get from it. Also theres no loud, high pitched overtones to it. This snar is great for any style of music! But it today!!

Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:

I just recently bought the 5" snare used (hardly) from a local shop as a replacement. It was a great price, and I knew I wouldn't find Ludwig quality for any cheaper so i jumped at the chance to buy it. I would pay more than $300 for this drum. It has a really nice pop sound and just enough overtones. It is prfect for any type of music and has a good range. You must buy this drum.

Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:

This drum is amazing. I found it in a shop in texas one day and I decided to buy it. I put a remo coated ambasador head on it and it sounds beautiful. It's one of the best sounding snare drums Ive ever heard. The apearance of the drum is also beautiful. It looks really good with my Pearl drums. It's just a great drum without costing as much as others.

      The Legendary Acrolite

Comments about Ludwig Aluminum Snare Drum:

The Ludwig Acrolite Aluminum Snare Drum is the most essential snare drum on the market. I didn't pay the price that this gorgeous drum usually fetches when new, but I gladly would have. The Acrolite can handle anything you want it to do.

These drums were and still are the standard for academic percussion programs and as a result, they are very plentiful on the used market and prices are very low.

Right now I'm using an Evans G1 on the batter side and a Hazy 300 on the reso with Puresound Blaster 20 strand wires.

I did a little bit of recording with this beauty and it sounded fantastic. In short, every drummer needs this drum.
