Comments about Ludwig Black Magic Stainless Steel Snare Drum:
I'll start by saying I have not owned any higher end snares besides this one, just listened to many samples online. I decided on the 6.5x14 Black Magic Stainless Steel for two main reasons: the price/value and the "cut".For the past couple months me and my 2 friends have been working on our punk band project getting ideas together, and I've been upgrading my gear piece by piece. I needed a bang for your buck new snare that would cut through very loud playing and still sound good. When I put my evans g2 top/hazy 300 bottom and puresound snares on this thing it was LOUD. The rim shots are honestly ear piercing, it's almost painful haha, my deaf dog ran away upon me playing a rim shot. You can say this snare lacks in versatility and "warmth" for softer or fatter sounds, but you gota know what youre shopping for. If you need a loud attacking crack with high overtones, perfect for my situation, then look no further. If you want a jazz or some other kind of snare, this is simply not for you. It's a specialized sound, and it's very good at what it's made for. That is why I gave this snare almost a perfect score. I was a little disapointed by it's lack of warmth and versatility, but I realized I shouldn't mark it down for that - that's just what you should expect out of a stainless steel snare - and the volume and cut through the mix is perfect.Punk/Metal/Rock drummers looking for a mid to upper range new snare should consider this one.
