this kit is pretty great. the stock heads leave something to be desired but throw on a set of pinstripes and that void is filled. the snare drum out of the box sounds terrible but when i put on a controlled sound batter head and traded out the stock wires for puresounds the sound was amazing! its got a pretty wide tuning range as well; loose lugs give a nice warm fat sound and tighten it up for a good crack! and the 20x24 bass drum THUMPS!!!!! it took a little while to get the tuning and beater position right but its got a lot of boom. this kit has a great classic rock sound.
my only complaint is the hardware seems cheap. the lugs look like the low quality lugs ludgwig puts on their accent kits and the single ball mount looks and feels weak and flimsy.
overall: while the hardware isn't the best of the best this definitely a great kit with a great sound. for the price i would expect better hardware, but other than that i have no complaints.
The only thing I could find that I didn't like about this kit, was that you pay A LOT of money for this drumset. Don't get me wrong I love it, but I haven't found out why it cost so much! Lower your prices! The maple shells sound phenomenal and the tone is great. All around I love this set.-Tyler Wolf, drummer of Deny the Truth
i gave a higher rating overall due to the sound. the bad: they come with taiwanese remos. they are not as good as the us made remos. period. the chrome on the lugs is lumpy and less than brilliant. the feet on the floor tom legs are a travesty. i only counted 6 plys on the snare (supposed to be 8?). the good? i got the clear natural, and the finish is beautiful. smooth as glass. the grain is very nice, contrary to what you may have heard elsewhere. there is even some quilting, inside and out! a nice surprise. the bearing edges are ok. a couple of nicks here and there. one has a dinged bearing edge that looks like it was filled with metal- a nice touch i've seen on high end stuff. after replacing the floor tom feet, i must say, these drums sound very nice. with the stock heads. the batters are 10 mil single ply (like an ambassador), and the resos are 7.5 mil (diplomat). the snare side head is 3 mil, with a 20 strand snare. no doubt they will sound better with different heads, but they sound really good as they are. the floor toms prefer to be tuned low, and the snare sounds pretty darned good. the kick comes with ps3 equivalent heads. they sound good enough and look good enough for me to overlook the shortcomings.
basic. nothing outrageous.
the finish is nice. as mentioned by another reviewer, the hardware- meh.
pretty good value.
I got this drum set plus an additional 14x13 floor tom in the transparent black finish and let me tell you, they're ridiculous! They're one of the best drum sets I've ever played. Even with the stock heads they sound great! The bass drum's an absolute cannon, the toms have great middle range tone, and if you tune the snare right, you can get a pretty good crack out of it, even with the crappy stock heads. I definitely recommend this drum set, you will not be disappointed!
I just received this set today, and I gotta tell you I am blown away by the sound out of these drums. The 24"x20" bass drum has a very solid thumpy boom, very deep and very loud. The riding tom, when tuned properly, has a very nice tone and sustain. The floor tom is perfect if you want that deep punch at the end of your roll. I'm still working with the snare to get the sound I want but have always had this difficulty with wood-shell snares. All in all this is a very solid set for any style.
