I've had it for 20 years (5"),it now has brass-plated die cast rims (I like the look),Remo Coated Controlled Sound Reverse Dot (whew, that's a mouthful),Remo Ambassador Snare & Puresound 20 wire snares.Tune it up,tune it down, backbeats to fine articulation, the hammered bronze does it all.

Great sounding snare drum for sure!

Comments about Ludwig Hammered Bronze Snare Drum:

I have been an active player both live and recording for 35+ years. I used a hammered bronze 6.5x14 snare for a lot of that time. I played a TV show and the snare drum sound was phenomenal, everyone commented on how it sounded and the producer was in awe of how easy it was to get it to sound great. It's sounded great on every recording I've ever done and great live. I got to hear an accomplished famous drummer play it at a show I did with another band and the snare just ripped your face off, everything you could want. Crisp, fat, articulate, loud, soft if need be...just an all around pleasure to play and one phenomenal snare. I highly recommend it.

    20 years playing this.

    By Juniper Tuc

    from Milwaukee

Comments about Ludwig Hammered Bronze Snare Drum:

I have been playing the Hammered Bronze Ludwig Snare drum for 20 years live and in the studio, in many different styles. It's really rad, a great balance between wood and metal, and it looks as good as the day I bought it. It's value has nearly doubled! I may upgrade the strainer to a P86, try 40 strand snares and try a wood hoop on top for kicks. If you play different styles and are looking for one snare drum to buy, I'd say go for it. I also own a 6X14 Tama G Maple snare, 6X14 Tama Birch Snare, and 5X14 Tama B/B snare.

The 6.5 is Warm, Woody Metallic...Sweet

Comments about Ludwig Hammered Bronze Snare Drum:

I own most of the Ludwig Snare drums in both 5 and 6.5 X 14. Crome, brass, ludaloy, old and new, hammered and smooth. I rank this hammered bronze up there with the best of the best. I tune all of my snare side heads to A and the batter's to C. This provides a really nice tone and you get to hear what the drum sounds like compared to others. This way I can compare apples to apples. I use Remo coated Emporers as batters and Remo Hazy Ambassadors on the snare side. Compared to my other Ludwigs, this bronze snare is woody with a slight metallic ring and needs no dampening at all. It tunes faster than any other drum I have ever used period. It has a wide tuning range and a very EQ'd sound to it. If you have trouble tuning snares, this drum is for you. It is hard to make this drum sound bad. It is also a very beautiful drum and you will get many compliments even from non musicians. I don't believe you can do much better regardless of what metal Ludwig snare drum you buy. They are the most recorded snare drums ever. Go to just about any good studio and they will have several Ludwigs on hand to choose from. You will be hard pressed to find a better sounding snare drum at any price. Good luck with your search!

    AMAZING!!!

Comments about Ludwig Hammered Bronze Snare Drum:

I was skeptical when I first bought this drum. I had never played it, only heard recordings of it. I've never played a drum that sings so beautifully. It works perfectly for jazz and rock drumming. The hammered shell dries out the sound so it doesn't ring too much. It's very sensitive and articulate, and the dynamic range is wide too. I would reccommend this drum to anyone. It may seem pricey, but it's worth every penny.

One of my dream snare drums!

    By Scott Bachman

    from Raleigh, NC

Comments about Ludwig Hammered Bronze Snare Drum:

I have wanted one of these drums for 20 years! I finally had some extra money so I bought one. This drum has a beautiful and striking appearence for starters. I recommend the 6 1/2x14 for a balance of woof and crispness. I also have a 1981 smooth Black Beauty and this drum sounds a little different. It's easier to get more articulation in your notes with this drum if that is what you are looking for. I have my hammered bronze drum wide open with medium loose snares and it is a good balance. The Black Beauty sounds a little smother to me while this one has some pleasing grit. I will say just like the Black Beauty, I had problems getting all lugs to produce the exact same pitch. This all goes away if you use a Tama Air Ride stand to suspend the drum. It's like magic!

    Good Snare

    By Spaundrummer

    from Cape Girardeau

Comments about Ludwig Hammered Bronze Snare Drum:

I have used this snare extensively in concert and drumset situations. I really like this snare, and it is very versitle. The bronze shell is a lot warmer than the supraphonic. This is a good drum that will work in any situation. The only thing I don't like is the snare strainer. But I guess it's a ludwig thing.

Could this be the perfect snare?

    By Glorified Beer Salesman

    from Fayetteville, AR

Comments about Ludwig Hammered Bronze Snare Drum:

I've owned several metal drums over the years. Ludwig and non Ludwig. To my ears, this is the best metal snare I've ever owned or played. I prefer it over my Supra Phonic and Black Beauty both of the same size. Just a nice overall sound. It's dry but still retains a nice full sound at any playing level. I highly recommend the 6.5 x 14. It will probably be the last metal snare you will buy. It's that good.

    Dry like fine wine!

    By 66 Club Date

    from Huntsville, Alabama

Comments about Ludwig Hammered Bronze Snare Drum:

In my opinion, this is the best all-around snare drum one can buy. Hammering dries out the ring and removes any clankiness, but it still retains a unique voice that cuts through the music. Play it in the middle and it sounds like a wood drum; play it off center and it has a very pleasing tone that doesn't overhang the note. Hammering doesn't appear to affect the snare response, and each hammered drum is one of a kind in appearance. I think it is suitable for any kind of music.
