OVERVIEW

A modern twist on a century of custom American drum making.

The Ludwig Keystone 4-piece drum shell pack includes a 22" x 18" kick, 10" x 8" and 12" x 9" rack toms, and a 16" x 16" floor tom.

Traditionally, the Ludwig Sound has run the gamut between the low tonal warmth of the Legacy drum shell, and the resonant mid-range qualities of Classic Maple. As musical tastes and styles have evolved, however, a growing segment of the drumming community sees the need for a louder alternative. With this need in mind, Ludwig's team of engineers and craftsmen went back to square one with one goal in mind: a completely new drum shell for today's Ludwig Drummer.

The latest creation from Ludwig USA's Monroe facility, Keystone Series Drums have the distinction of a more focused tonality. The 3-ply maple core used in their Classic Maple drums is augmented with 1/16" inner- and outer-plies of American red oak. This 5-ply combination creates a thin, dense drum shell that speaks loudly with quick, even decay. In order to draw further resonance from this unique hybrid, the dual 45° bearing edge is pulled to the center of the shell to seat perfectly into the head.

The end result is a Ludwig drum shell that produces solid, authoritative tone with high power and attack. For the live music drummer, a perfect balance between high-volume cut and subtle articulation is achieved. The Ludwig Keystone Series is made under the same strict quality and structural standards as Classic Maple and Legacy drums, putting a modern twist on a century of custom American drum making.

The namesake of Ludwig's legendary icon, Keystone Series drums feature the new low-contact Keystone lug and mounting bracket for a dramatic look and feel.

Hardware and cymbals sold separately.

Comments about Ludwig Keystone 4-Piece Drum Shell Pack:

I was researching all brands at all price ranges and when I heard this kit my search was over. Sounds as good as kits that cost twice the money. Deep, rich, warm, powerful, resonant, responsive. I would recommend it to anyone. Out of the box, it has the power to rock hard and the responsiveness to lighter strokes and brushes that make it fit in all genres.

Comments about Ludwig Keystone 4-Piece Drum Shell Pack:

There are two items I want to address to get them out of the way. The bass hoops are a minor let down. They are wrapped to the edges and a little rough on close inspection. Also the vibraband tom mount didn't fit properly. I had to bend it a bit to get it to center on the tension lugs. Also, the retaining tabs are welded on, and a little rough. It works, and looks great, but it's not perfect. Fit form and function are somewhat compromised. Not a show stopper though. Just something I would take up with their R and D folks.
About the kit. This is the 24, 13,16,18 Mint Oyster Glass shell pack. It looks like this configuration has been discontinued, so I feel lucky that I got this when I did. ( They might still be available, you would have to call MF to find out for sure. But the other configs are still here).
I was enamored with this finish from the git go, having examined it in various web sites for months. I had to have it. Now having it in my hot little hands is every bit as exciting as the "want to" I have been experiencing. Absolutely stunning! This is the Holy Grail of wrap finishes in my book. I could not possibly be more pleased.
I unboxed this kit with more anticipation than I had when I got my first (of dozens) NEW drum kit, candy apple red Pearl Fiber glass drums in 1976. That was cool. This was dyn-o-mite!
The drums came with Evans heads, not sure of the models. Not my personal preference, but who wanted to wait? Not me.. I set these girls up in about 15 minutes in place of my other new kit I just got last year.
It took another half hour to tension them up to taste. I can honestly say that I had never felt more confortable behind a drum kit, especially right out of the box. The heads are fine, and I would have been happy with them, but ended up putting Remo coated Emperors on the tom batters. The bass heads and reso's are good as they are. So viola! Ready to gig, record, jam, whatever. Perfect sound, to my ears. Beautiful drums. The best part is that I got all this for under two grand. Buy these drums and you won't be sorry. They have a good deal of the unique "vintage" Ludwig tone to them. Of course you can make them sound any way you want with heads, dampening, etc. But naked with the Remo's on them they are just about perfect to me. They are a bit of an improvement over the old Luddies in that they are a little "tighter" sounding, and feeling. the dual 45 degree bearings edges and oak/maple/oak plies probably account for that. So the 1st 2 things I didn't like get washed out of my head when I play these girls. I absolutely love these made in the good ole US of A drums. Just Love them.

    HOMERUN

Comments about Ludwig Keystone 4-Piece Drum Shell Pack:

Ludwig has made a "HOMERUN"...the "USA Keystones" sound as stated in the discription. They have a sound that is warm, round, like the classic/legacy lines, but with great attack and quick decay. Perfect for the stage, no unwanted overtones with the stock "Evans USA G-2" drum heads. If you want to play jazz that's fine, just put thinner more resonant and batter heads. I have owned the Classic series, they were great, these are Better....Yup! The 2.3 hoops are a upgrade, the chrome is better, the new lugs blow away the classic's, the hardware on the drums have better quality, new keystone badges and keystone styled wing nuts, bass drum hoop claws are awesome. I have the, 12-14-20 configuration in New Apple Glass Head Turners for Sure! I purchased their new superlite 14x4 metal snare....Wow what a pop! And for the drummers that are thinking "laquer finishes"...my classics were laquer and my new Keystones are a wrap and they in my opinion are way better for a cut through stage sound with no unwanted overinging, "Sound Man's Nightmare", plus the wrap protects the drum much better! .....The only.... and I mean only thing I did not care for was the fully wrapped bass drum hoops, the edges were not smooth. They should of been inlayed for sure, So I stripped them off and Painted them with jetblack and clear cote. Looks Awesome and adds a Custom look. "I just wanna bang 0n these drums all day" LOL

      Definitely a great buy.

      By Dave Lenavitt

Comments about Ludwig Keystone 4-Piece Drum Shell Pack:

You just cant go wrong with this kit. Buy one and you will see.
I have been playing drums for over thirty five years and I have had many drum kits over that time, to include Tama, Pearl, and Yamaha. I always wanted a Made in the USA Ludwig kit and I ordered and received the Keysone Classic Series in deep blue. The sound of these drums are incredible and they do just as Ludwig says. They open up beautifully and then have a very short decay. They have just the right amount of overtone with the stock G2 heads so that was a plus right out of the box. Bass drum is very articulate and all the drums tune very easily. This kit is as good if not better than the previous kits I have owned and they were all high end kits.
The wrap tight finish is beautiful, and has no flaws what so ever. The bearing edges were perfect and assembly of the drums was simple. The only thing that I found wrong was that the 10" tom was missing a screw for one of the Keystone lugs on the inside if the shell. I contacted Ludwig personally, and within three days had the part for it. They even gave me an extra.
You will not find a better made USA kit for the money from any other Drum manufacturer. I did consider the DW Performance kit, but the price was more and I have played DW kits and I think they are over rated. I wanted a USA kit with quality and that is what I got. Not made in China Tiawan etc. was very important to me.

      Keystone Series Shell Pack

      By Showtime Dave

      from South Florida

Comments about Ludwig Keystone 4-Piece Drum Shell Pack:

      10
I have owned my Keystone kit for about 8 months now. I think I was the first in the United States to receive my drum set. I absolutely love the 60's red color glass finish although it is considerably darker then the original 60's model Ludwig. The combination of Maple and Oak wood make these drums loud and sing beautifully. This means when you play a tom fill the volume does not drop out.
Also this translates into smaller size shell producing incredible amount of low frequency tones
with that Ludwig sound. I am not certain how they do this as I have an American classic kit as well.
And there is this distinct Ludwig sound and feel on both drum sets.
The reason I did not rate this as a 10 is that my set was missing some hardware for mounting the toms, Ludwig quickly mailed to me the additional parts I needed and all is well.
