Comments about Ludwig Steel Shell Snare Drum:

This thing sounds amazing. 10 lug with an internal dampner and Evans heads. Tuned the batter head up nice and tight and it has a good crack, plus it is loud. For the price this snare is a steal. Wish I would have bought this sooner. The shell is not seamless but they have done well on the seem. Would buy again.

              Better than expected

              By BabyBoomer

              from SW Virginia

Comments about Ludwig Steel Shell Snare Drum:

I had already planned to change the heads and hoops to Ambassador coated batter, Ambassador snare and Gibraltar 2.3 mm Power Hoops, so I can only comment on the sound after I made the changes. Wow! I like a sharp crack with the sticks and and very clear brush accents at low volume. This snare drum does it all. It's still my second favorite but I am more than pleased and very pleasantly surprised overall at the sound, quality and value.
I was looking for a good quality metal snare drum for the rougher gigs outside or at parties or wherever I didn't want to take my best set with my favorite metal snare. This is to go with my older Ludwig CS Custom Accent jazz size set which has normal wear and tear, so I didn't want to spend to much money and still get a good sound. I didn't want the muffler and knew I would have to remove it anyway -- so it was a quality feature some may want, but I didn't. This turned out to be a much better buy than I thought, especially for a seamed shell.
Keeping in mind this is a seamed shell, the seam is hidden very well underneath a lug and does not show at all from the outside. The lug screws, throwoff screws, and butt screws were all torqued exactly the same which was a very pleasant surprise. Usually, on other sets even if they are torqued the same, they are all a little loose; I didn't have to touch a single one. I was going to change out the throwoff for a better one but this is far better than the one I was going to use. I am very pleased with the material and assembly. Even the logo is installed much better than expected. Top quality overall.
Even though this does not have any "heritage" name like Supraphonic, it is a top quality snare. The seam can only be seen from the inside and you have to look hard for it. It is joined perfectly. I expect the price on this model to go up after enough reviews come in.

Great Snare Drum/especially for the price !

Comments about Ludwig Steel Shell Snare Drum:

I bought this drum as a gift to my church, when someone stole the snare drum from the church's drumset. (Yes, REALLY...). I am a semi-retired professional show drummer with a Music Ed/Percussion degree from Northern Illinois University. I am absolutely impressed and very happy with this drum. It has that Classic Ludwig Chrome Snare Drum look, projection and tone quality.
Ten lugs for better tuning accuracy (also a free drum key !) I like the appearance and response of the Evans coated batter head. The internal tone control knob, etc might be a little bit flimsy, but I barely use those anyway. The strainer was easy to adjust and throw on and off. Very light to carry around. On the whole, I am surprisingly impressed and satisfied with this drum...especially for $125 !!! Musicians Friend also got it to me promptly, and it was well-protected with packaging.

Surprisingly Great Snare Drum for the Price !

Comments about Ludwig Steel Shell Snare Drum:

Looks great ! Has that classic chrome Ludwig look. Nice 10 lug drum for more accurate tuning and tone. Also nice and light to carry around. I was a professional show-drummer for years, with a percussion degree from Northern Illinois University. I bought this as a gift to my church because someone stole the snare drum from the church's drumset. I tuned it up with the rest of the set and it all plays great and sounds great. The internal muffler adjustment knob feels a little bit flimsy, but I barely use those anyway. I like the Evans batter head. All in all it's a fine instrument for a fine price. I also received it very quickly from Musician's Friend. Well packed. Also includes a free drum key !

A Universal Snare at a Great Price

              By Austin Hass

              from Vancouver, WA

Comments about Ludwig Steel Shell Snare Drum:

Hardware is good, the drum looks great, stock heads, and snare wires sound good, ten lugs, its a ludwig...what else coudl you ask for? Its one of the best snares I've played and I've play a lot of them.
The throw-off is smooth and has a rubber grip to easily be switch on and off. The butt plate also is very high quality. The snare wired sounds fantastic as well. With an Evans G1 on top and a free drum key, that seals the deal.
The shine on the drum is amazing. Its actally like a mirror. It looks amazing. This snare also has a great sound, you can tune it high or low, you'll get a lot of range out of it. The bottom snare head is just some generic thing but its not a biggie. Also the knob that adjusts the felt muffler inside the drum is plastic but its not reall something i'l use, it can easily be remove. The ten lugs make tuning easy and the rim shots sounds superb.
This is totally worth it. You might be thinking" Oh its steel, probably not that great"...no its that great. It sounds sharp, snappy, but has a wide variety of sounds and it looks great.

              One impressive snare

              By Cale Berry

Comments about Ludwig Steel Shell Snare Drum:

I wasn't sure what to expect when ordering this snare drum, but once it arrived and I got A Remo Coated Ambassador and an Ambassador Hazy Snareside Head on it, it sounded (and still does sound) as good as my father's Supraphonic for some things. The drum doesn't have as much of a tuning range as other snares, but tuned tight, it has a nice loud crack! I definitely recommend it!
You won't find a better snare anywhere for the price, plus tis one comes with 10-lugs, while most in this price range only come with 8!

              Legendary Ludwig Quality

              By Dave G.

              from Detroit, MI

Comments about Ludwig Steel Shell Snare Drum:

I've always preferred Ludwig drums and therefore have sought to own their products; especially a supraphonic snare. However, I'm on a budget that doesn't permit the purchasing of a supraphonic but I still wanted a high-quality Ludwig snare, so I purchased the 5"x14" version of this snare. I'm extremely satisfied with it, as well. It has a Remo Powertroke 3 as the batter now as I prefer Remo to Evans, but the snare side head is still the stock version. The snare absolutely sounds amazing, rivaling that of the Ludwig model LM400, and I'm extremely pleased that it also has internal tone control (muffler). Best snare I've ever owned, bar none.

              Low Budget Supraphonic!

Comments about Ludwig Steel Shell Snare Drum:

I'm very impressed with this snare, and also its bigger brother, the 6.5x14 LM-302, which I also own. It tuned up easily with the stock Evans G-1 coated batter and no-name snare side head. With the resonant head cranked, the snares fairly loose and the batter head between mid and tight, it produced a nice, bitey "crack" with decent sensitivity at lower volumes. I was able to get a very similar sound to my mid 70's b/o badged LM-400 Supraphonic. Overall, one of the best values in snares out there, at a great price from MF. Highly recommended.

This snare is really aweosme.i thoughtfor the price that it would be an okay sounding snar but i was wrong! this snare can easily compete with the expensive snare drums out there. i normally dont like shallow snares, but give this snare shot. i did, and its truley an amazing snare.
