I don't know why I ever got away from Ludwig drums and equipment but I have been drifting back because nothing else seems to "hit the sweetspot" like Ludwig products. I am not trashing other manufacturers, I love my Yamaha and Gretsch drums, but Ludwig drums still have the exact sound I like.

I owned a 1961 COB 5X14 Super Sensitive with the individually adjusted snares when I was a kid and didn't realize what I had (if the current owner of that drum reads this, I'll gladly pay you what I paid for it brand new - ). Now I have a 6-1/2 inch SS in chrome and Ludalloy from the early 1980s and it has the same incredible sound. The snares (Puresound) respond to the lightest touch and when you strike the center of the snare, what a punch in the gut. This thing is comfortable playing Ravel's Bolero and then going straight to Zeppelin. Tune it up or down and it responds perfectly. Now, what do I do with the other snares I bought?

Although the newer model is not as robust as the older drums and the Ludalloy is prone to pitting (mine has a couple of spots, not bad for a 30 year old drum) nothing else on the market seems to have the sensitivity and crispness of this drum. I realize cost is an issue because "They Ain't Cheap" but neither is a Ferrari. So I'm not recommending you go out and get one immediately unless you can find a deal or afford a new one.

Fantastic drum, I will always have an SS from now on. By the way, to the guy that has my original SS, I'll give you an offer for the Red Sparkle Ludwig Super Classic set you got with the SS. Never sell your first, real drum set.

I bought one of these back in 1990, but it was a 402, and this one had these rubber grommets that are installed behind each imperial styled lug. I searched Youtube on these snares for sound before I made my purchase. The drum I got was sensitive, but did not have the open, extremely resonant, eye shutting loudness like my drum teacher's did back in the day. I realized after sending this back for a full refund that these rubber grommets do take away from the resonance of the shell compared to the older models without the grommets. I bought a Black Beauty with tube lugs and am very happy with it, and it has that John Bonham sound I was wanting.

If you are looking for a dampened snare sound then get this with the imperial lugs or take the grommets off. They worked well back in the day, no difference now. Who cares if the lugs scratch the shell. My old one did as I am sure all. Did not take away from the amazing sound. Now if you want a full open ring, resonant snare sound like the vintage 70's models, then get this with tube lugs for full benefits. Also I was always into the fancy P-70 Super Sensitive strainer. Well I had a hard time with this one getting it to adjust to touch the bottom head all the way. This is supposed to be designed to touch the head, and I never got it perfect. Do yourself a favor, get the cheaper model with the P-86 throw and you will be so much happier! Extended snares don't mean a better sound. Also would recommend changing the head as soon as you get the drum. The Ludwig heads they put on these are cheap and don't sound the best depending on your personal taste. I would recommend this if it was a couple hundred cheaper. This did not sound like an expensive snare to my ears.

Comments about Ludwig Super Sensitive Snare Drum with Classic Lugs:

I have had the 5" chrome version since about 1972, being the original owner. I agree with every positive thing said by others. I bought it because the snare strainer made sense. Back then it came with an internal tone control, which I personally like and use. For my personal sound, I've added a Black Suede SNARE SIDE made for the resonant side, and Genera HD Dry Coated Batter and to me that is EXACTLY what I was looking for period.

          Excellent

Comments about Ludwig Super Sensitive Snare Drum with Classic Lugs:

I been playing drums for many years and have owned drums by almost every maker. The Ludwig super-sensitive snare has a different sound from all other snares that I play. Most of my snares are wooden but I also own a Ludwig Supraphonic. The super-sensitive has a very big sound. The drum sound is open and large. With brushes the drum has amazing sensitivity and makes playing expressively with brushes very easy. The super-sensitive sounds great at all volume levels and has awesome projection. This is one of the few drums that separates the vertical and horizontal tensioning forces of the snares. The result is that you can have very tight crisp snare tuning without a lot of tension that chokes back the bottom head on most snares. The drum requires very special handling. The snare assembly is very easy to knock out of alignment so please handle this snare with special care. If you do so, you will really have one of the greatest snare sounds out there.

          Simply Brilliant

Comments about Ludwig Super Sensitive Snare Drum with Classic Lugs:

The LM411, 6.5x14" w/ the P-70 Super Sensitive Snare Strainer never ceases to amaze people, especially the newer drummers. The look on thier faces when they first hear it live, or get to play it is just like the snare, Priceless! They are instantly bitted by the gotta have above all else bug. Ludwig hit the Jackpot when they designed this shell some 80 years ago, and along with the LB419 is the Holy Grail of snare drums. Quality is top notch on the S.S. and the price is Totally Reasonable. This snare drum is one you will keep for the rest of your drumming days and would never even think about reselling!

I used a chrome LM-410 for years. It gives you volume when you need it and quiet when you don't. The features on this drum make it very easy to get the exact sound you want. Even after having drums custom made for me, I think a Super Sensitive right off the rack sounds the best.
