Comments about Ludwig Supralite Snare Drum:

was looking for the perfect companion for my Acrolite and spent no less than 4 trips to my local drumshop before deciding on the 4x14 supralite. I NEVER buy snares shallower than 5" because piccolos are usually one trick ponies. Not the case with this bad boy. I won't even deign to call this a piccolo. I prefer to think of it as my secret weapon. Sensitive enough for brushes, but can rimshot like a shotgun. Paired with my aluminum snare I can go from jazz to rock to studio and never changes drums. And all with a 4" depth! And with a Steel Shell (usually my least favorite material) Ludwig has brought a steel acrolite out from their vaults and everyone who can should get one of these in their collection before Ludwig realizes their mistake and jacks up the process on these bad boys.

Comments about Ludwig Supralite Snare Drum:

Ludwig has a way of doing this. In 1963 they introduced the Acrolite as a "student snare." Soon the sound became so desirable that they've recently "reissued" it for four bills.

The Supralite is a sleeper of the same magnitude. It's got a beaded seamed shell with thick chrome on it and all its parts. Snare butt is die cast, and rims are 2.3mm. I got the 4" depth because I got a deal on it I couldn't pass up.

Generally, I don't care for snares deeper than 5.5" - they sound "tubby" to me. Five is my favorite depth. Four was a gamble, as in the minds of many this makes it a "piccolo snare."

As soon as I got it I took the top head off to inspect the build and then replaced it with a coated G2 and tuned it up. When I started playing, I had to stop and look under the drum - "Where's the rest of it?!" Its like the Tardis.

The drum has a feel-it-in-your-gut punch. I've had Acros, Supraphonics, Kenner maples - I've never had a snare that punched like this - and it's only 4" deep!

Rim shots were like lower-register gun shots - absolutely startling. I think something thinner like a G1 would really pop the upper register, but may lose some fatness (I may eventually try a Power Center Reverse Dot - in my experience, these have the rimshots and ring of the G1 with the fatness of the G2 with center hits).

Grab one of these before they become popular. I suspect that they are Chinese made (doesn't say that anywhere), and the price-point reflects the mfg cost. Once word gets out about the sound, my bet is that Ludwig will start charging for the sound rather than the mfg cost, just like they did with the Acro.

            • Bonzo On A Budget

Comments about Ludwig Supralite Snare Drum:

I will concur that these are really nice snare drums, especially for the money. I got the 6.5 x 14 and it sounds great, (plus looks boss as well with those chrome tube lugs). I've always stayed away from steel/metal snares since I figured they would sound brash, harsh and clangy... never thought "warm" would be an appropriate adjective for this type of drum, but darned if the shoe doesn't fit in this case. First tried it tuned a bit lower and it wasn't really happening, but cranked it up higher, (tuned to an "A" note on top and "E" on the bottom), and it really came alive. I usually use a ring to dampen, but this baby even sounds cool when left wide open, (think John Cougar Mellancamp "Rain on the Scarecrow" sound). Sounds fine even with the stock heads... but sure it will sound even better when I get an Evans "HD Dry" on there. Conjure up a "Bonzo" vibe on a poor man's budget... you can't go too far wrong with one of these babies. Certainly a nice flavor to have available in your arsenal.

I saw some good reviews for this, so I thought I'd give it a shot. As soon as I got it out of the box I was impressed with the overall quality. Then I listened to it, and I am really amazed that a drum this killer can be had at this price. I used to favor wood shell snares, but the Supralite won me over. Very warm without harshness in any tuning range, ringy at the edge(in a good way) and nice solid body when played at the center. I'm surprised that even the heads are pretty good. Don't stand there gawking- BUY ONE!!

Bought this drum because of the low price to use in the rehearsal room instead of my vintage Premier, my favourite drum. Until I got the Supralite! This is an amazing sounding snnare and I will never, ever trade it away for another drum. I have a Supraphonic also but that is far inferior to this drum. Absolutely amazing tone, sound and depth! I play it with a Evans Genera Dry batter and Evans Hazy 300 for reso.
