During a ten year period of my professional career, I put 10,000 hours on the same 6.5" Supraphonic. For five of those years, the drum was played hard with the butt end of Regal Tip Rock sticks. Whether miked or unmiked, rimshots on this instrument would make people in the parking lot wince. The drum was responsive at every dynamic level from pppp to ffff. Strokes always have definition, and press rolls are perfect. The shell is very live, but not obnoxious. I tuned the batter a bit higher and the snare head a bit lower, and got a great Bonham sound.

The throw off could be better quality, but this has no effect upon the sound of the drum. I found that I would break one or two batter hoops a year, either at the tension rod holes, or at the right-angle bend, where the hoop would crack longitudinally. Still, this is a bargain snare drum, and the sound is superb for the money.

I regret selling mine seven years ago, and I'm going to buy another one, having since been disappointed with other name snare drums that just can't match this beast.

I waited a long time to buy this snare. Didnt have the cash. I've been playing drums for 20 plus years and never had a top of the line snare until now. Well at first it was like a honeymoon. I was thrilled to finally have this snare. I bought the Ludwig die-cast hoops at the same time cuz I knew I wanted that feature. The snare does everything I expected. But I didnt expect the low quality of the components of this high end snare. The p-85 throw off is junk. I bought the p-86. The (supra-phonic) snare wires that came with it are also junk. I bought pure sound wires. Even the hoops that came with it felt cheap. The shell is the only remaining original component to this snare. After I replaced all the cheap parts I now have the snare that should of came stock for the price I finally paid for it. I would still buy this snare but be prepared to up-grade some parts.

Great Snare, Horrid Throw-Off

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum:

There's no mystery this snare drum sounds great, so this review is about the things Ludwig needs to address. I bought the 6.5 brass model, and I was amazed at how crappy the throwoff is. When the snares are off, it vibrates loud enough to be heard with the drum. It's just unnacceptable for a $500 drum. There's a special numbered badge attached to the brass models, and mine is slightly crooked. This doesn't affect the sound of the drum of course, but where is the attention to detail? It tells me Ludwig is phoning it in these days. Musician's Friend made it right, but Ludwig seriously needs to get their act together.

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum:

The COB (Chrome over Brass) reissue Supraphonic`is a Hugely missed snare drum that has built almost a Cult Following over the years. I dont believe there is a recording engineer out there who doesnt have this one on thier must have list of the perfect snare drums. The sound of this snare is almost legendary and can be heard on everyone from Steppenwolf to the Monkees throughout the 60s/ and early 70s. The Chrome over Aluminum model LM400/LM402 has a Dryer, much less ring, and the Black Nickel Anodized over Brass, (Black Beauty) has a Darker, Warmer, and again Less Ringy. The COB Answers very quickly and has a High Pitched Ring at the end of the Gunshot like attack. It can be enhanced or subdued depending on personal taste but gives the drum an unmistakeable, almost Thoroughbred like, Graceful, High Spirited, and Elegant Looking. But Make No Mistake, This Baby Goes way beyond the subtle nuances of ghost notes where you Hear the Entire drum, not just the head or snares like you do with cheap copies, but also has the ability to take your mother inlaws head clean off, your Guitarist will be bleeding from the ears with a single crack of this one. The Manners and Breeding of a Nobleman and the Guts, Projection and Presence of a Gunslinger, One that will Never Disapoint. Last But not least, Replace the P-85 with a P-86 and Puresound EQ, 16 strand snare wires. I like the Evans Coated Genera Dry and HD Dry.

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum:

Contrary to several misinformed reviews of this drum, the Ludwig Supraphonic LM402 6.5 x 14 drum is NOT CHROME-OVER-BRASS! It is chrome-over-aluminum.

What this drum IS? Everything you want in a drum and nothing less. Extremely versatile, incredibly responsive, and the best snare drum value on the market. This drum is the prototype METAL SNARE DRUM. All the other drum manufacturers try desperately to copy this this drum, and they fail miserably.

The Ludwig Supraphonic works for ANY situation...it sounds incredible played quietly with brushes, pounded into oblivion, and anything in between. I have personally owned 2 of these drums (a 1967 model and a 2005 model) and they sound PHENOMENAL.

I have used them on jazz cafe gigs, screaming punk rock shows, reggae all-nighters, country gigs, hip-hop/soul/r'n'b...anything and everything and the drum is amazing! I use this drum on EVERY session in my studio... Quit wondering and buy this drum NOW!

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum:

At first one wonders, "Why the price tag for a piece of shaped metal"? Let me clear this up. It is one of the most responsive snare drums I have ever played. Better yet if you are recording you will see that the waveform needs little if any EQ at mixdown. The wave is uniform all the way across with no spikes in the frequency. How Ludwig did that, who knows. I only know it is simply brilliant.

The best snare drum for my needs.
Superb shell, classic lugs, but P-85 strainer? Why Ludwig puts that strainer on their top shelf drums is beyond me. I upgraded to the P-86 which is SWEET.
Classic sound in all tuning ranges. Perfect!
I can't imagine a drum that costs 3x as much sounded any better!

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum:

John Bonham did not use or like the brass based snare drums that ludwig made. Also, he did not pursue using brass snare drums in the studio or on tour. In the Thunder of Drums book his drum tech describes in great detail how John would check every snare drum by scraping a little of the the inside chrome off to make sure the snare was not brass. I believe the actual quote from John was that the sound from a brass snare was "too dark".
I believe he used purple Hayman snares, double check me on that.

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum:

I just purchased a mint condition 70's version of this drum. It is easily the best snare drum I have ever heard. There is a reason that competent drum makers all copied this design when Ludwig's patent expired. It's just that good! You can get literally any tone you want out of this drum. I have used Attack single ply coated, Remo Black Suede, Emperor and Ambassador coated heads, and reverse dot heads. Each had it's own nuances, and every single head sounded great, even the reverse dot (I don't like reverse dots usually, they seem to cut out some of the high end crack to me - but they still sound great to me on this drum). You can tune this drum to any tone you like - whether it be low and fat, high and dry, ringy (in a good way), tight and poppy, or any combination of the above. And the great thing is, this snare seems to work for EVERYTHING. On quieter tracks (jazz, alternative, etc) the sensitivity is astounding. On louder tracks (rock, metal), it's attack has a perfect combination of punch-you-in-the-chest low/mids and slap-you-in-the-face high end crack. Overtones can be tuned to taste - from ringy to extremely dry and anywhere in between.

My favorite thing about this drum is how well it takes muting for when you want a very focused and dry sounds. Many snare drums (including ones costing twice the price or more) will start to lose their tone when muting is applied (moongels, tone controls, wallets, tape, paper towls). Not this drum.

If you/I could only own one snare, this would be it. There's a reason it's been used on so many great records. There are many great snares out there, but this model is king and will almost certainly remain that way. The Black Beauty version of it is also excellent. Do yourself a favor and buy this drum, even if you end up selling one or two old ones to get it.

Comments about Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum:

I thouroughly enjoy my 5x14 Supraphonic Brass Snare with any genre. It gives a great crack when you torque the top head, but also has excellent sensitivity when tuned lower. For this particular snare I recommend an Evans Genera hd Dry snare for the batter and a single ply Ludwig Rocker snare side head on the bottom. Happy Slamming!
