This drum set was the backbone of ludwig back in the 70's with drummers like bonham, and is still ludwig's ace. Ludwig offers many different classic drum wrap for this set. Personally, my favorite is the white marine pearl, which I also own. I have to disagree with the comment below, which was written by Axel. You can play any type music on this set. This set is especially cut out for rock and jazz. The two floor toms can give you that big band jazz feel, or that thunderous john bonham feel. The deep drum sizes and the punchy rack tom make make this set very versatile.I do agree that the stock heads aren't good. Evans G2 clear heads are just too thin to spread out on a 16 and 18 inch drum. Myself, I put Remo Emperor Coated heads on my drums. The best thing with those heads is that you can tune them any way you want. Some people like a thud, and others like a ringing sound, like the old big band sets. Even John Bonham, drummer for LED ZEPPELIN, tuned his drums with a ring to it.This set is a very good drum set. It is worth buying. I was lucky when the price was a little cheaper than it is now. I would suggest this set to a beginner just starting out, but to a veteran drummer who appreciates rock and jazz. thank you.
just got my zep set a mounth ago and im blowing away my singer and guitarist. im a bonham fan so i got the set.love the floor toms they sound awsome.go out and get one if you can find one .I wanted the natural, but had to settle on black diamond pearl ,but they look great
- Visually stunning... sounds even better.
I love my maple finish Zep kit. I have owned vintage Vistalite Bonham setup years ago, my new maple "pretties" sound and feel extremely close my old kit, like deja vu. I took a hiatus for several years. Recently wasted my time with a Pearl kit, but now I got the fire and desire like I was 22 again from these drums. I drove from Fairfax, Va. to Cincinnati for this kit because of the price and I was at first disappointed these were not the blue/olive badge drums I expected. I bought them anyway 'cause they were so pretty. Boy am I thrilled I got them now! They are powerful, beautiful, and a true inspiration to play on. I will NEVER again own anything except Zep Set Ludwig. My idol has always been John Bonham. When I am playing my heart out, I like to believe Bonzo is pleased. Simply put NO other drums come close in giving back what you put into them than Ludwig. Bonhams' Glory will NEVER be eclipsed. RIP Bonzo...

If you are looking for the true Bonham sound, I would suggest saving for the Maples. I had the kit in hopes that it would deliver like the maples with the right tuning and heads but I just couldnt get it to. The 13 tom is brutal. The snare isint good. The floor toms and bass are amazing though. And the hardware is sturdy and great. I hope this helps some people out there.
I recieved my zep kit on new years eve 2008 and havent looked back, except for the people who hear it. It has a very loud and full sound perfect for Rock/heavy rock. keeping the 18'floor tom in tune with the other two toms can be a challenge yet it is achievable. This kit is like THUNDER and with the right cymbals you realy can not go wrong, and it looks great on stage. ROCK ON
I recently purchased one of these sets and have been having a great time with it. The bass drum is a killer, with plenty of low end even though I favor a tight batter head. I put coated G2's on the toms and a Genera Dry on the snare and they really came alive. I would play this set with pride anywhere. Of course, I would prefer Maple Classics, but as this is my extra kit, couldn't justify the expense.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the Zep kit. I've always wanted that configuration, but couldn't justify laying out the cash necessary for what was previously available. The bass drum is pretty awe-inspiring right out of the box. The snare drum is pretty decent, responsive and sensitive considering it's depth. The toms sound pretty good with the heads supplied, but really came alive with Evans coated G 2's. I put an old one on the 16" and it sounded excellent, as good as the one on my Birch Classic kit. Basically, it's the kind of kit that brings a smile to your face when you play it.
Well, when I went shopping for a new drum kit, I knew I wanted to get a ludwig. I sure the made the right choice in choosing this one. Its a got a full bodied bass, that sounds like a thunder cannon. The toms give a great deep sound for pattern drumming a epic drum fills. This drum set is amazing buy it!
I have owned this set for about 2 months now and I can honestly say that I still get excited when I get behind these drums just like the first day I bout them. In my opinion ludwig is the best, and if you want to actually feel the power of the drums then you need to buy a ludwig set. Starting with this one! they tune up nice and sound amazing. If you are thinking of buying these drums, look no further!
Just bought this kit today. I was trying to figure out if I wanted to take a chance on the mahagony kit or wait and save up for the maple. The local music store really gave me a good deal, they sounded pretty good in the store, so I went for it. I have a set of Tama Starclassics which I love and these drums are right up there in sound quality and that bass drum kicks!! Right now I stil have the Evans G2 heads on that came with it which I will soon replace. I have never heard the maple kit but honestly these do not disappoint. The only thing that I will probably not use is the snare that came with it. It's not a bad snare, but my Pork Pie that I use with my Tama's, I'm gonna still use. I'm sure the snare with the maple kit would be pretty sweet though. All in all for the money these are real impressive and worth buying.
bonham's tom is not 13x11 its 14x10 his drum tech said on a video and on all other set up info ive seen about him its a great sounding set besides that just not exactly a zep set so you might want to buy individual so you can get his exact sizes but if your just lookin for a great rock kit here it is
Well, to start, I have played drums since the age of 4 and now I am 17. I have always looked at Bonzo as my idol, and have always wanted a copy of his set. The 26" bass drum is just amazing. Also, the floor toms' make triplets sound like Bonham's triplets. However, the only problem that I have with this set, is that I can't get the snare to sound like Bonhams. But I'm looking to get a new snare. Overall, this set was very worth it, and I advise any Bonham lover to buy it.
The Zep Set definitely rocks! If you are looking for a big drum sound on a small drum budget this is absolutely the perfect set to get.I was a bit apprehensive with the low price tag. I was happy to see when I opened up the boxes that the Evans G2s were no standard on all but the snare. I left them on and changed the snare head to a Remo black dot and it sounded much better. I tuned them all rather easily with a DrumDial tuner and cut a six inch port in the forward facing bass drum head. I miked that with a Sure Beta 52 and the rest of the drums with Sure SM 57s. They absolutely thundered and sounded great. The party we were playing at had another drummer in attendance and I let him play a few songs so I could hear what they sounded like a hundred feet away. The bass drum cuts through everything and the toms are loud, powerful and great sounding. I was very impressed with the overall sound of the kit. You definitely get a lot of value for the money with the Zep Kit. The included bass drum pedal is a good one, with a heavy duty snare stand, high hat, and two included cymbal stands with Tom mount it?s a lot of bang for the buck.
I have wanted the Classic Maple set for two years but settled for this becasue of the price. I was not dissapointed, except with the heads. I would recomend to anyone who buys this set and wants an authentic Bonham sound go out and buy coated Emperor heads for the toms. I would also recomend replacing the bass head or getting a kick pad becasue i put my beater though it very quickly. Overall this kit is great. I recomend it to anyone.
I've been playing on this set for a couple weeks and just get better with time. I upgraded from an accent combo to these. I have never played on drums with the big shells before so I was worried about tuning. They tuned very easy to that big bonham sound, but made a few minor adjustments to sound like me also. I love the bass just so powerful. The hardware is very sturdy and you can trust having your rack tom on the mount. I got the naturals (no plastic wrap!!) and there gorgous. I would refer these drums to any serious drummer.
I had been shopping around for a shellpack with these dimensions for a couple of months. For the money these can't be beat. Well constructed, great finish, excellent value. The bass drum is enormous, my whole band has to turn up since I bought this kit. The double floor tom set up is classic, made better with the 16"-18" combo instead of 14"-16". The matching snare is warm, happy that it's wood. All in all fantastic, without dropping $$$ on the American made kit.
I play alternative rock and ska and this set just delivers!! I got the bass pedal adjusted just the way I like it. The toms come with clear Genera's on them. I'm not a fan of clear heads and will eventually replace them with coated Genera's but they are nonetheless thunderous!! I played a gig recently and didn't need to mic the drums other than the bass and snare. The snare is solid and offers a great sound. The bass at 26 inches is freakin' huge but is not any louder than my last kit's 22 inch bass. Its a shallow bass, though tall, so you're pushing lots of air volume through it. I found a double pedal system sucks with this bass drum. It wants the single (or maybe a dualist pedal) type of pedal so you can really hammer on it. I remounted the smaller tom on a snare stand (like Bonham did) even though it came with a sturdy mounting bracket for the drum (attached to a rim mount system). I prefer the snare mount. The bracket/L rod system placed the drum too far away from me. I couldn't get it set the way I like it....but its sturdy and totally useable for those folks that like that type of set up. Overall, an awesome drum kit! If you play hard and are a heavy hitter like me, this kit delivers!! I'm glad I bought it!!
I have owned this drumkit for about 3 hours now and this is the first time I have ever felt compelled to write a review for anything!! I have been playing Yamaha drums for the past 15 years and love them but they don't really offer anything in these sizes so I decided to purchase these. I got the one with the natural finish and I have to say it looks great for a $2,000 kit. The hardware is good and solid. Obviously, it's not up to the standard of top line hardware from the major companies but you're getting good value for money.I changed the heads to coated Emperors and couldn't believe how quickly these drums tuned up to that great Bonham style sound. After reading of some other reviewers problems with the toms and the snare I was a bit worried but, literally, within minutes, the room was shaking to some classic Bonzo grooves (done my way of course!)Overall, awesome value for money, great sounding and good looking drumkit. I recommend it to anyone wanting that classic big rock sound with a tight budget.
My school just purchased this drumset, and I was privileged to be the first one to play it through the schoolyear, and it overwhelmed me. I played it for pep band, and it filled the gym easily, and sounded so great without any micing whatsoever. This is a great kit. (and also, i used a double pedal on this kit, and it sounded great...i'm guessing it just depends on if you are picky with your double bass setup and action.)
i bought this kit in july of this year and let me tell you i'm totally sastified. This kit totally lives up to ludwigs name. the only problem i had with this kit is the snare skin. Aside from that the rest of the skins are surprisingly good for stock. Oh yeah the bass will blow your socks off!
