Comments about Mapex Black Panther Brass Cat Snare Drum:

Lets start from top to bottom:

The Hoops: Mapex's Sonic Saver hoops are unbelievable. They have a slightly thicker top where your stick meets during a rimshot making it more powerful and projecting vs your traditional flanged hoop, yet is lightweight compared to a die-cast hoop, so it isn't choking the snare drum at all. not to sound so cut and paste of the mapex website, but it literally has the openess and sustain of a flanged hoop, but the feel and projecting rimshots of a diecast hoop without chewing your sticks up.

The shell:
I must say, this shell looks beautiful with the spun design, but the sound is so smooth! Right out of the box i noticed this pure long lasting ring that brass is so known for. Being a metal snare, it is automatically louder and has more sustain then your average wood drum, but it has a beautiful versatility and pure sound.

The Snares:
this snare is very sensitive and responsive. there is a knob for adjuting the snare tention on both sides of the strainer and the hinge to turn on and off the snare is smooth. it doesnt seem to click as much as advertised on the websight when the snares are turned on, however it hasn't turned off during my hardest and fastest rimshotting single strokes.

This is a beautiful looking drum, it looks golden and every component matches from the hoop to the shell making this snare very appealing to the eye.

Comes right out of the box with a Remo Coated ambassador, so you really get to hear the tonal quality of this snare drum right out of the box.

Only complaints:
I have noticed that tuning low and fat can be slightly dificult to acheive because it is a naturally bright drum, so low tuning for this drum is more like medium-low tuning.
Also, looks can be slightly deceiving in regards to the material. Most intermediate to high-end snares have metal strainer, whether it's chrome or brass, etc. This Snare's strainer is plastic, but painted the EXACT colour as the shell and looks identicle. i only noticed this because when the latch is in the off position, you can see the small circles common in plastic parts. It would have been nice to have a brass strainer for strenght and quality purposes, but that is if your being picky. personally i don't mind.

This is a loud, bright, cutting, and pure sounding drum. It is extremely sensitive and with the right muffling or unmuffling, can be used in any musical situation. Keep it up Mapex.

Very Impressive Snare Drum

Comments about Mapex Black Panther Brass Cat Snare Drum:

well I just got this snare drum about two days ago and i love itI currently own a vintage ludwig COB supraphonic with super sensitive snares, and a mapex birdseye maple snare, and this drum fits perfectly in between the two sounds. It was a vintage dryness to it. The only bad part is that it doesnt project too to loud you reall have to crank it

Comments about Mapex Black Panther Brass Cat Snare Drum:

I won this in a contest and boy I'm glad I did! This thing has huge amounts of volume, I'm almost positive you could wake up the neibors with it! That aside it does have a bit too much reverb. Well I guess that's kinda the "norm" for a brass snare and I don't really care for that sound so I put a remo dampening ring on it. Now it sounds like heaven! No joke! All in all a great snare!
