OVERVIEW

A gorgeous burl maple and walnut snare that will give your sound a classy edge.

Don't be deceived by the Mapex Black Panther Velvetone drum's beautifully seductive exterior-this snare drum is wickedly dark with a high degree of sensitivity. Its 8.1mm drum shell is constructed from one 3mm exterior burl maple ply, one 3.4mm walnut middle ply, and one 1.7mm interior maple ply.

Each Black Panther Velvetone drum features handbuilt and hand-finished Black Panther shells and completely redesigned hardware. From the fresh, sculpted lug design to the smart badge, this Mapex snare drum is now more beautiful than ever.

Mapex Black Panther hardware
The cylinder-drive strainer uses a self-lubricating bearing to ensure smooth operation while providing minute control of the snare's tension. Mapex's piston-style throw-off is incredibly smooth and requires minimal effort to operate, and the adjustment dial employs micro-lock technology that provides a tactile click as it's turned, allowing precise control.

Sonic Saver Hoop
The Sonic Saver Hoop bridges the gap between flanged hoops and die cast hoops. A unique shaping process creates a profile that reduces wear and tear to both sticks and hands while dramatically enhancing the response and feel of every rimshot.
The Sonic Saver is significantly lighter than a conventional die-cast hoop, so it won't choke the shell's vibration. The result is a more natural percussive sound with much greater resonance.
This Black Panther Velvetone snare drum features stainless steel snare wires for crisp, lively action, and premium Remo drum heads, including a coated Ambassador batter head.

Comments about Mapex Black Panther Velvetone Snare Drum:

I've played a lot of drums so far. And you won't find a snare that will make you feel as good as this one does. So much body and warmth for a 5.5 depth. So far I've played the Stock Remo Coated Ambassador, the Attack Terry Bozzio Coated 1-ply, and the Remo Ambassador X. And each head brought out the individual characteristics that makes this snare great. The Coated Amb was a general good blend of characteristics, the Attack 1-Ply brought out the pop in the snare, and the Ambassador X brought out the tone of the drum. And the rim will add a little more time to your sticks. Don't believe me? Go try it.

Comments about Mapex Black Panther Velvetone Snare Drum:

            Very warm sound. Good quality.

The only flaw is on hoop. Mine was obviously not well polished before chrome plating process and I see bubbles everywhere.

Other than that everything is fine with this one.

Comments about Mapex Black Panther Velvetone Snare Drum:

I usually prefer deeper snares but this one has something most other shallow snares don't - incredible body! The walnut plies in the middle of the maple inner and out plies give this drum a very desirable warmth and darkness without loosing its pop. I played around with a few different heads on this drum. I like how many Remos sound, but can't stand their lack of durability so I tried an Aquarian Coated Reverse Power Dot, Coated Super 2 (2-ply), and finally a single-ply Aquarian Texture Coated Batter. In the end the single ply coated batter really let the wonderful tone of this snare open up so that's what I stuck with along with a Classic Clear Snare side head. This snare is a keeper for sure and I would say anyone that is shopping for an incredibly well made, great sounding snare, you really ought to try one of these drums. From the beautiful finish to the amazingly smooth throw-off, you will not be disappointed! If you are going to record I would highly recommend having this one in your arsenal for it's fantastic and unique tone that will really fit anything from jazz to hard rock.

Comments about Mapex Black Panther Velvetone Snare Drum:

If you like wood snares get this one! It may not be the loudest wood snare out there but it's loud enough. Great for the studio. I do a lot of country and CCM music and its great. I'm not a big Remo fan. I put a Evams Power Center Reverse dot on it as soon as I opened the box. It has good crack and low end. Tune it high and it cracks tune it low and you get a fat gooshy sound. As long as you knownhow to tune a drum This one will sound good no matter what! It's sensitive enough for rudiments but csn get loud. It's fairly dark sounding without a huge amount of overtones. Side stick sounds good and meaty. The finish is beautiful and the hardware is sturdy. I love the clicks on the strainer adjustment. Good job Mapex!
